About Malaysia
Malaysia consists of three federal territories and 13 states. It is a federal constitutional monarchy in Southeast Asia, sharing land borders with Indonesia, Brunei, and Thailand, and maritime borders with the Philippines, Singapore, and Vietnam.
A multicultural and multi-ethnic country, Malaysia's constitution confirms Islam as the state religion while protecting the freedom of its citizens to follow their religion of choice. Due to colonial influence, the official mechanism combines legal procedures outlined by English common law within a Westminster parliamentary system.
The head of state, known as Yang di-Pertuan Agong, is selected from the hereditary rulers of Malaysia's 13 states. The prime minister is considered the head of government.
