JEE (Advanced) is the IIT admission examination for candidates who first qualify through JEE (Main), with limited direct-registration exceptions for foreign nationals and OCI/PIO (F) candidates. For a student planning for the 2027 intake, it is a high-priority route only if they meet the cycle-specific eligibility rules and are prepared to take both papers. As of 27 October 2026, the official pages reviewed here contain the 2026 brochure and cycle information; 2027 dates, fees and detailed eligibility rules are not announced in those sources. Treat the 2026 figures below as a planning reference, not a promise that the rules will repeat.
JEE (Advanced) rank is the basis for admission to undergraduate-entry bachelor’s, integrated master’s and dual-degree programmes at the IITs, subject to the programme-specific Class XII admission criteria and seat availability. The rank does not itself assign a seat: eligible candidates must register for the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) process, fill institute and programme preferences, and respond to the seat-allocation rounds under that year’s business rules. In 2026, the brochure said the actual course list would be shown when choice filling opened, which is a reminder to compare the current programme list rather than assume last year’s options will recur. The 2026 information brochure describes the IIT admission scope and JoSAA’s separate role.
Some other institutions have used JEE (Advanced) ranks, including IISc Bengaluru, IISERs, IIST, RGIPT and IIPE, but the 2026 brochure explicitly directs candidates to contact those institutions for admission details. This is not a common seat-allocation guarantee. Check each institution’s own 2027 notice for whether it accepts the rank, its application route and any additional eligibility conditions. The exam also has a distinct architecture route: candidates who qualify JEE (Advanced) may register for the Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT); passing AAT is required for B.Arch. at IIT (BHU) Varanasi, IIT Kharagpur or IIT Roorkee. AAT registration and result have separate dates. Do not treat the engineering rank alone as sufficient for B.Arch. entry.
For Indian nationals and OCI/PIO (I) candidates, the 2026 rules required both taking JEE (Main) B.E./B.Tech. and being among the top 2,50,000 successful candidates across categories. The brochure listed category-wise shortlisting shares and noted ties can make the total slightly exceed 2,50,000. This is an eligibility shortlist, not an IIT admission cutoff or an Advanced rank. JEE (Main) is conducted by NTA; JEE (Advanced) is separately administered by the seven zonal coordinating IITs under the Joint Admission Board (JAB). Clearing the Main shortlist only opens the next registration step; it does not register a candidate automatically for Advanced.
The 2026 brochure allowed foreign nationals and OCI/PIO (F) candidates who studied or were studying at 10+2 level in India or abroad to apply directly without JEE (Main), subject to the other Advanced eligibility conditions. Their process and seat treatment differ from the Indian-national route, and the brochure contains specific rules for nationality documents, reservation treatment and seats. OCI/PIO status is divided into categories in the brochure, so candidates should use its definitions rather than infer the route from the card alone. Check the current foreign-candidate instructions and 2027 brochure before deciding whether Main is required.
Every Indian national and OCI/PIO (I) candidate had to meet all five 2026 criteria together: the JEE (Main) shortlist; a birth-date limit; no more than two Advanced attempts in two consecutive years; first appearance in Class XII or equivalent in 2025 or 2026 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics; and restrictions connected with previous IIT admission. For that cycle, the general birth-date threshold was 1 October 2001, with a five-year relaxation for SC, ST and PwD candidates. These dates apply to 2026 only. The 2027 limits must come from the 2027 brochure.
The two-attempt rule is especially important when planning a repeat year. A candidate’s relevant window is two consecutive years, not any two years chosen freely. The 2026 brochure used the first Class XII appearance as another boundary: students appearing for the first time in 2025 or 2026 were within the stated year range, while first appearance in 2024 or earlier was generally outside it. A documented exception covered candidates from boards that declared 2023–24 results on or after 18 June 2024. A withheld result did not independently create eligibility if the board had declared results before that date. This exception is narrow; confirm the exact board and dates against the official text.
Previous IIT admission can also bar a candidate. Under the 2026 criteria, having been admitted to a listed IIT academic programme, including cases where the candidate later left or had admission cancelled after joining, generally made the candidate ineligible. Some cases were treated differently: a first preparatory-course admission in 2025, or an allocated IIT seat that was not reported for, was withdrawn before the last allotment round, or was cancelled before that round, could remain eligible subject to the other criteria. These distinctions depend on what happened in the JoSAA process and whether a candidate actually joined. If you have ever accepted, reported for or joined an IIT seat, read the exact 2027 clause and seek clarification from the official help channel before paying a fee.
An Advanced rank and IIT admission eligibility are separate tests. For IIT admission, the 2026 brochure also required either at least 75% aggregate in Class XII (65% for SC, ST and PwD candidates) or a position within the top 20 percentile of the relevant board. It specifies how five subjects, improvement attempts, board certificates and the corresponding year are handled. For example, improvement candidates could use permitted subject-wise marks for the 75% route, while the top-20-percentile route can require improvement in all subjects and uses the relevant year’s board threshold. Do not assume that sitting the examination or appearing in a rank list waives this admission condition. Use the official admission criteria page for the exact case and retain a single-board marksheet as required.
JEE (Advanced) requires a separate online registration after eligibility is established. In 2026, direct registration for foreign nationals and OCI/PIO (F) opened 6 April; registration for JEE (Main)-qualified candidates opened 23 April. Both closed on 2 May in the original brochure, with fee payment originally due by 4 May. The official homepage later recorded an extension to 5 May at 23:59 IST, illustrating why candidates should watch the live announcements and not rely on a saved brochure or coaching calendar alone. Registration was incomplete until payment succeeded. The 2026 portal also published a route for raising registration issues. Dates for the 2027 cycle remain unpublished in the official sources reviewed for this overview.
The 2026 fee depended on candidate category and test-centre location. For Indian nationals at centres in India, the fee was ₹1,600 for female candidates of all categories and for SC, ST and PwD candidates, and ₹3,200 for other candidates. Foreign nationals and OCI/PIO (F) applicants had USD-denominated amounts depending on SAARC status and centre location; Indian nationals and OCI/PIO (I) applying at foreign centres had a separate amount. Payment-gateway charges could be additional, and the brochure stated the fee was non-refundable and non-transferable. These are 2026 amounts, not 2027 fees. Before submitting, verify the exact category, nationality classification and centre location against the active fee table.
Keep the practical sequence visible: follow NTA’s JEE (Main) registration, exam and result notices; check whether the Main result places you in the Advanced shortlist; register separately on the Advanced portal during its window; pay and confirm the application status; download the admit card; sit both papers; then follow the answer-key and result notices. Applicants using reservation, disability accommodations or a foreign/OCI route should prepare the required certificates early. The 2026 brochure required applicable category and disability documents, and the rules for certificate format and issue date were cycle-specific. For scribe or compensatory-time arrangements, the brochure instructed candidates to opt in and upload prescribed documents during registration.
The 2026 examination was a computer-based test with two compulsory papers on the same day, each lasting three hours. Paper 1 ran 09:00–12:00 IST and Paper 2 ran 14:30–17:30 IST on 17 May 2026. Each paper contained Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. The questions were designed to test comprehension, reasoning and analytical ability. Both papers were required; attending only one would not complete the examination. English and Hindi were available, with an option to switch during the exam. The English version prevailed if there was a difference of interpretation.
Question formats, section structure, choices and marks are not safely described by a fixed template. The brochure said negative marks could apply to some incorrect answers and that the detailed marking scheme would appear in the instructions for that examination. The official 2026 question papers and answer keys are useful for understanding that edition, but they should not be used to predict the 2027 section design or scoring. In particular, do not plan around a remembered “usual” number of questions or total marks: consult the 2027 brochure and the candidate instructions released with the paper. The syllabus is published in the brochure, but this overview does not substitute a topic-by-topic syllabus checklist.
Candidates eligible for compensatory time under the applicable disability provisions could receive one additional hour per paper in 2026, subject to the required registration and documentation. The rules also described scribe arrangements for eligible candidates. Check the current forms and instructions early, because accommodation arrangements involve deadlines and documentation rather than an exam-day request alone.
JEE (Advanced) does not report a percentile comparable to JEE (Main). Under the 2026 brochure, the aggregate was the sum of marks awarded in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics across the papers, and rank lists were prepared from that aggregate. To enter a rank list, a candidate had to clear both the minimum in each subject and the minimum aggregate for the applicable category. For example, the 2026 Common Rank List thresholds were 10% in each subject and 35% aggregate; the GEN-EWS and OBC-NCL lists used 9% per subject and 31.5% aggregate. These were minimum qualifying conditions, not a rank prediction or a guarantee of a seat. JAB may set different thresholds in a later cycle, so do not use 2026 percentages as a 2027 target.
The result provides category-wise All India Ranks for successful candidates through the online portal; the 2026 brochure said individual rank cards would not be sent separately. A qualifying rank only makes a candidate eligible to participate in IIT seat allocation. It does not guarantee admission to a preferred branch, institute or even an IIT seat: allocation depends on merit, the choices submitted, the seats available and the rounds conducted. Compare rank with the relevant JoSAA opening and closing ranks for the same programme, category, quota and round. A qualifying mark threshold answers “is a rank list available?”; a closing rank helps assess a particular seat, and those measures should not be conflated.
For the 2026 cycle, the admit card was scheduled from 11 May and listed candidate identity and category details, exam-centre name and address. Candidates were instructed to check every entry and contact the zonal coordinating IIT chairperson if there was a discrepancy or download problem. A printed admit card and original valid photo identity document were required at the centre. The dates and exact document list can change; follow the 2027 instructions and keep the identity document consistent with your registration details.
The 2026 sequence after the exam was: candidate responses on 21 May; provisional answer keys on 25 May; a feedback window through 26 May at 17:00 IST; and final answer key and results on 1 June at 10:00 IST. The 2026 JoSAA process was scheduled to start tentatively on 2 June at 17:00 IST. These are completed 2026 dates, useful only to illustrate the order of steps. The 2027 schedule had not been announced in the reviewed official material. Once the 2027 result is published, check the score and rank, then register with JoSAA by its own deadline, research current programme eligibility and fill choices in genuine preference order. Monitor every allotment round and complete the required acceptance, fee payment and reporting actions; a missed JoSAA step can cost an offered seat.
If your goal is an IIT undergraduate programme and you plausibly meet the eligibility rules, JEE (Advanced) belongs in your plan after JEE (Main), with a separate registration and two-paper exam day built into the calendar. If you are outside the Main shortlist, do not assume that a high board score can replace it for the Indian-national route. If you are an eligible foreign national or OCI/PIO (F), check the direct route and its distinct rules. If you want IISc, IISER, IIST or another institution that has used Advanced ranks, verify that institution’s 2027 admission route independently. Above all, wait for the 2027 brochure before making a final eligibility decision: the 2026 birth-date window, attempt boundaries, shortlist and fee are cycle-specific.
No. In the 2026 Indian-national route, a candidate first had to meet the JEE (Main) shortlist condition and then complete a separate Advanced application and fee payment within its window. Follow the 2027 portal instructions for the new cycle.
No. Qualification or a rank permits participation in seat allocation, but the 2026 brochure states that rank, choices and participation do not guarantee admission. Seat availability and merit across allocation rounds matter.
No fixed pattern should be assumed. In 2026, both papers were compulsory and negative marks applied to some question types, while detailed marking instructions were supplied for the examination. Read the 2027 brochure and on-screen instructions for that cycle’s scheme.
The 2026 brochure listed several other institutions that had used JEE (Advanced) ranks, but asked applicants to contact them directly. This does not establish their 2027 route. Check each institution’s own current admissions notice.
Use the official JEE (Advanced) website and its announcements and important-dates pages, then use JoSAA for counselling dates and business rules. As of the research date for this page, the reviewed JEE (Advanced) sources publish the 2026 cycle, not the 2027 schedule.

JEE Advanced 2026 historical reference; no 2027 rules asserted: For JEE (Advanced) 2026, Indian nationals and OCI/PIO (I) candidates had to be among the top 2,50,000 successful JEE (Main) B.E./B.Tech. candidates, subject to the specified category distribution. For 2026, the general birth threshold was 1 October 2001, with a five-year relaxation for SC, ST and PwD candidates to 1 October 1996. The 2026 attempt limit was two times in two consecutive years. The 2026 general first-appearance window was Class XII in 2025 or 2026 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics compulsory. Candidates from boards declaring 2023-24 results on or after 18 June 2024 who appeared in Class XII in 2024 could be eligible for JEE (Advanced) 2026 if they met all other criteria. Foreign nationals and OCI/PIO (F) candidates studying at 10+2 level in India or abroad could register directly for JEE (Advanced) 2026 without JEE (Main), subject to other criteria. The 2026 IIT admission criteria required 75% aggregate or top 20 percentile; the aggregate threshold was 65% for SC, ST and PwD candidates. Appearing eligibility and the separate IIT admission marks condition must both be checked in the complete 2026 brochure, including prior-IIT-admission restrictions and route exceptions; this is not an individual eligibility ruling. JEE Advanced 2026 historical reference; no 2027 rules asserted: For 2026, subject marks summed each subject across Paper 1 and Paper 2; aggregate was the sum of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and ranks were based on aggregate. Qualifying, filling choices or participating in seat allocation did not guarantee IIT admission under the 2026 brochure. The official JEE Advanced site stated that JoSAA registration and choice filling were mandatory for qualified candidates seeking an IIT seat in 2026. Rank-list qualifying thresholds are distinct from JoSAA opening and closing admission ranks. Official sources: https://jeeadv.ac.in/documents/IBEnglish_2026.pdf; https://jeeadv.ac.in/
