Hindi is widely used in Singapore. Anyone can choose it as a subject for study. According to one estimate, about five thousand people use Hindi here.
Several awards are given in the Hindi language. These are called the Hindi Inspiration Awards, and they are presented in three age groups: 8-12 years, 13-16 years, and people over 16. Participants compete in different categories. This year, Samia Khan of Indian origin won first prize by writing a story in Hindi.
Mamta Mandal, founder of the Global Hindi Organization which holds the awards, says the main objective is the development, prosperity, and growth of Hindi language and culture in Singapore.
Singapore's Education Minister, Neg Ang Hein, notes that Hindi's popularity has increased. People have started to understand Bollywood music. Many non-Hindi speakers are also taking an interest in learning the language. Hein says he supports Hindi along with Tamil, Gujarati, and Urdu.
Seven new Hindi teaching centres have opened, making the facility accessible near people's homes. Four new schools were added to the program this year, bringing the total number of Hindi schools to 53.
