NLAT 2020: Supreme Court allows NLSIU to conduct entrance exam
Last updated: April 20, 2026
The Supreme Court has permitted the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) Bangalore to organize NLAT 2020. However, the court stated that the institute cannot declare the examination results until the court rules on the exam's validity.
A petition challenging NLSIU's sudden decision to separate from CLAT 2020 and conduct its own NLAT exam was filed by former NLSIU vice-chancellor Prof. (Dr.) R. Venkata Rao and students' parents. The petition argued that NLSIU's action created unprecedented uncertainty and placed an undue burden on students, leaving them uncertain about their future academic plans. It further contended that this "unilateral decision" has put CLAT 2020 candidates in a difficult position and constitutes a serious violation of their fundamental rights.
NLSIU has issued technical requirements for NLAT 2020. Candidates must have a computer system or laptop with at least 1 MBPS bandwidth.
While the consortium of 23 law colleges has scheduled CLAT 2020 for September 28, NLSIU has set the NLAT 2020 exam for September 12.
