Admission routes depend on the programme
For IIT (BHU) Varanasi, first identify the degree and admission channel: a B.Tech or Integrated Dual Degree (IDD) applicant follows the undergraduate JEE Advanced and JoSAA process, while postgraduate and doctoral applicants use programme-specific institute notices and qualifying-examination rules. The current public cycle is not the same as the next intake. On 27 October 2026, JoSAA’s 2026 site said Round 5 seat allocation had been announced and described that counselling cycle as admission for academic year 2026-27. The institute’s PG portal, separately, was accepting applications for PhD admission in the 2026-27 even semester until 9 November 2026. Neither source announces the 2027-28 UG dates or rules.
The institute’s Training and Placement Cell lists B.Tech as a four-year programme and IDD as five years, both through JEE; it lists M.Tech as a two-year programme through GATE. That page is a programme overview, not a substitute for current eligibility rules or a complete list of live seats. Applicants should verify the exact discipline, degree and admission route in the current official notice before applying.
B.Tech and IDD: JEE Advanced, then JoSAA
For the ordinary IIT undergraduate route, a candidate must qualify JEE Advanced and then participate in JoSAA seat allocation. JoSAA describes itself as the single platform managing allocation for participating IITs, IISc, NITs, IIITs and other government-funded technical institutes; the 2026 session covered academic year 2026-27. Use the official JEE Advanced brochure for that exam year to check who may sit the examination, attempts, qualifying requirements and document rules. Passing the exam alone does not allot an IIT (BHU) seat: candidates must enter preferences and receive an allocation under the applicable JoSAA rules.
The useful next step is to build a preference list from official programme names and the current seat matrix, then compare it with opening and closing ranks for the same programme and category. JoSAA’s rank pages expose session and prior-year tables. Those thresholds are not fixed admission cutoffs: they vary by programme, round, seat type/category and rank pool. A rank from one category or round cannot be compared directly with another. Do not rely on an old overview headline or an aggregator’s single “closing rank” without checking those labels.
During counselling, follow the active schedule for choice filling, seat acceptance, document verification and any reporting instructions. JoSAA 2026’s home page notes that IIT/IISc physical reporting details are updated on institute profiles. Do not reuse 2026 dates for a future cycle. Keep certificates and identity documents ready in the formats prescribed by the current business rules, and check the official portal after each allocation round for changes or action deadlines.
Postgraduate and doctoral routes are programme-specific
IIT (BHU)’s academic programme table identifies M.Tech as a two-year degree reached through GATE; the institute’s live PG admissions page also links to M.Tech admission through COAP and publishes programme-specific notices. M.Pharm, PhD and other postgraduate offerings have their own qualifying-examination, department, discipline and selection requirements. The relevant information brochure and annexures, not a general profile page, determine whether a GATE, GPAT, NET or another qualification is accepted for a particular programme.
As a dated example, the institute PG portal showed an application window for PhD admission in the 2026-27 even semester from 23 October 2026 at 12:00 to 9 November 2026 at 17:00. It instructed applicants to register, select the programme and department/specialisation, enter qualifying-degree and examination details, upload documents, pay the processing fee, then preview and lock/submit the form. The portal says shortlisted candidates may be called for a written test and/or interview; the exact stages depend on the department and notice. These are live details for that specified PhD round, not a promise of dates or process for 2027-28.
The same portal says hostel accommodation is not available for applicants in that 2026-27 even-semester PhD admission, while HRA is provided under institute norms. It also gives a certificate-date condition for OBC-NCL and EWS applicants in that specific notice. Check the current brochure for the category document’s issuing window and the chosen programme’s eligibility before submission; an old certificate may fail even if the category itself is correct.
Application checklist and official next actions
For an institute PG application, the 2026-27 portal requires applicants to register with an email address, complete all form fields, select registration category and programme preferences, upload the applicable GATE/GPAT/NET score card, enter academic details and pay through the prescribed channel. Sponsored or external applicants may need work-experience details; the portal marks referees and publications as PhD-specific fields. It instructs candidates to preview the complete application before locking it and says changes cannot be made after final lock/submit. Shortlisted candidates are notified through the portal and department/coordinator email; the portal states that a hard copy need not be posted.
Before paying, download the current information brochure and verify the programme code, qualifying degree, minimum marks or CPI, test score, category certificate date and selection stages. Save the submitted PDF, fee receipt and application number. Send technical application questions to the portal’s listed help contact and programme questions to the relevant department; include the application number and programme in correspondence.
For B.Tech/IDD, check the JEE Advanced and JoSAA websites for the next session’s official bulletin, schedule and business rules. The latest pages opened for this review cover JoSAA 2026 and academic year 2026-27; 2027-28 UG requirements and dates were not announced in the sources used here. For M.Tech, PhD and other PG routes, begin at the IIT (BHU) Dean of Academic Affairs PG Admissions page, open the notice for the exact programme and semester, and follow its linked portal. A concise route check now can prevent a common mistake: preparing for the correct exam but applying under the wrong department, specialization or semester notice.
