MBA applicants: what is confirmed for the 2027-28 intake
For the DoMS MBA, I could not confirm a need-based scholarship amount, an application deadline or an award rule for the 2027-28 intake from the official pages reviewed. The department’s Fee & Assistantship page currently links a 2025-27 Semester I fee schedule, while the MBA FAQ says fee details are released before each semester. Neither page sets out a current MBA scholarship or tuition-waiver application. Do not subtract an assumed award from your budget until DoMS publishes a scheme for your exact batch.
IIT Kanpur’s broad Financial Aid page lists the Professor Vijay Mahajan Gold Medal for the best MBA student under postgraduate awards. The page does not give the medal’s cash value, selection date or application process. A graduation award is not the same as money available to pay admission fees. Treat it as a possible merit recognition, not guaranteed financial assistance at entry. The official ongoing scholarship list is organized around individual donors, programme years and eligibility rules; I did not find a DoMS MBA award identified there. This is a limit of the list reviewed, not proof that no outside scholarship could apply.
Why the institute MCM scheme is not an MBA scholarship
IIT Kanpur’s current Senate Scholarships and Prizes Committee page describes its Merit-cum-Means (MCM) scholarship for undergraduate students in four-year and five-year programmes and the two-year M.Sc. programme. The page says that up to 25% of students in a batch may receive it and states a family-income ceiling of ₹8 lakh from academic year 2026-27, along with CPI and other renewal conditions. Those conditions do not make the award available to a DoMS MBA applicant: the stated eligible programme groups are undergraduate and M.Sc., not MBA, M.Tech. or PhD. The current criteria were approved in the Academic Senate meeting held on 12-13 March 2026, and the income revision applies from 2026-27. Do not transfer the MCM ceiling, benefit or renewal rules to a postgraduate programme.
The institute’s scholarship announcements page shows application and award lists for MCM, donor and Free Basic Mess awards in 2025-26. These are dated student lists, not an open 2027-28 call. If you are already enrolled in a programme that the current MCM rules cover, use the current SSPC notice and its own form and documentation instructions. Prospective DoMS postgraduates should instead check their programme’s assistantship terms and seek a written answer from the department about any new batch-specific scheme.
M.Tech. and PhD: assistantship can offset costs, with work duties
DoMS lists M.Tech. and PhD alongside the MBA. For these postgraduate research and technical programmes, the relevant support is an institute assistantship, not the undergraduate MCM scholarship. IIT Kanpur’s current postgraduate financial-assistance page says regular, non-sponsored, non-part-time and non-external M.Tech., MS by Research and PhD students may receive Institute Assistantship. It currently lists ₹12,400 per month for M.Tech. and MS by Research students, and ₹37,000 per month for the first two PhD years followed by ₹42,000 per month for another three years. The page expects assigned duties of eight hours per week. It also says support renewal depends on satisfactory academic performance and completion of assistantship duties.
The page does not label these amounts as a guaranteed 2027-28 offer or give a DoMS-specific award letter. Treat them as the rates currently displayed when checked on 6 November 2026, not as a promise that they will remain unchanged for a future entry year or for the full duration. For M.Tech., the same page says a valid GATE score is required for regular candidates, with a waiver for B.Tech./BS graduates from IITs who meet the stated CPI conditions. Its assistantship section says GATE or JRF is required for M.Tech./M.Des./MS by Research, with listed exceptions. A candidate should confirm the applicable route with the current DoMS admission notice, particularly if applying as sponsored, part-time or external, because those categories are excluded from the regular Institute Assistantship statement.
For DoMS PhD in Management, the current PG eligibility page lists separate entry requirements and describes the programme as Management Sciences. Admission eligibility and assistantship selection are related but not interchangeable: meeting an admission qualification by itself does not guarantee funding. Confirm the current non-sponsored status, score or exemption rule, available funding, duties and renewal conditions with DoMS and the PG Admissions office before committing.
Other awards, fellowships and loans
IIT Kanpur’s PG assistantship page says students may also receive project-based Research Assistantships and may seek support from external agencies such as UGC, CSIR, NBHM, DBT, ICAR, ICMR or PMRF; it also mentions industry and Department of Atomic Energy fellowships. The page does not provide a single benefit amount, eligibility set or deadline for all these awards. Each sponsor sets its own rules. Check the specific call for eligible discipline, registration status, exam, application route, renewal, workload, tax or combination conditions before counting the money.
The DoMS FAQ separately says three campus banks, SBI, ICICI and Union Bank of India, provide loan facilities to students. A loan is repayable financing, not a scholarship or fee waiver. Compare the lender’s current interest, collateral, margin, repayment and moratorium terms directly; the FAQ does not publish those conditions or guarantee loan approval.
What to do before accepting an offer
For an MBA offer, ask DoMS whether any scholarship or fee concession has been approved specifically for your batch, when applications open, which documents are required and whether it can be combined with another award. The current department fee page points to a 2025-27 semester schedule, and the FAQ says fee details are issued each semester. These pages do not establish a 2027-28 scholarship deadline. Get a written answer before treating an award as part of your financing plan.
For M.Tech. or PhD, start with the current DoMS admissions page and the IIT Kanpur PG Admissions financial-assistance rules. Confirm that the programme and admission category qualify for Institute Assistantship, the current rate for your entry semester, the required test or exemption, assigned hours, renewal requirements and whether any external fellowship prevents another award. If a donor or agency fellowship looks relevant, follow that award’s current notice rather than borrowing an older year’s form or eligibility threshold. Keep the scholarship, assistantship, medal and loan categories separate when comparing net costs: only a confirmed non-repayable award or assistantship should reduce the cost estimate.
