Maharana Pratap Engineering College (MPEC) in Kanpur is a private institution that’s been around since 1999, and it’s a name you’ll hear a lot in Uttar Pradesh’s engineering circles. Affiliated with Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU), it sits on a sprawling 50-acre campus in Mandhana, not far from IIT Kanpur. The college pitches itself as an industry-ready launchpad, with tie-ups like IBM and AWS. But the student story is more nuanced—strong infrastructure and supportive faculty on one hand, and persistent gripes about hostel food and placement transparency on the other. If you’re looking at colleges in the region, MPEC is a solid mid-tier option where your outcome will likely depend more on your own hustle than the brand name on your degree.

Courses and Academic Programs at Maharana Pratap Engineering College

MPEC offers a wide range of programs under the AKTU umbrella, from engineering to management and pharmacy. The B.Tech is the main draw, with specializations in Computer Science, Data Science, AI & ML, Electronics, Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, and IT. They also run BCA, BBA, and a suite of postgraduate programs like M.Tech, MBA, and MCA.

The academic rhythm is dictated by AKTU. You’ve got unit tests, mid-terms, and end-semester exams. Passing requires 33% in both written and internal assessments. It’s a standard system, but it keeps the pressure on.

Faculty-wise, the college has about 100 members. You’ll find a mix—some are PhD holders and genuinely supportive, providing good study material. But talk to students, and you’ll also hear that some departments have fresher faculty. The teaching can skew towards exam patterns, which is typical for AKTU colleges. They have partnerships with IBM, IIT Kanpur, and AWS, which theoretically feed into the curriculum. The corporate relations cell lists names like TCS and Wipro. It’s a decent setup for a private college in this tier.

Maharana Pratap Engineering College Placements: Packages, Companies & Reality Check

This is where you need to read between the lines. The official brochure paints a promising picture: a highest package of INR 49 LPA from Microsoft for the 2023-24 batch and an average of INR 4.3 LPA. The placement percentage is claimed to be around 90-98% for eligible students. The recruiter list is impressive—Amazon, Cognizant, Deloitte, Infosys, TCS, Wipro, and many more.

But student reviews tell a more varied story. The average package alumni cite often falls between INR 3.4 LPA to 8 LPA, with many clustering around the 3.5-4.5 LPA mark. That’s a significant spread. More telling is the placement percentage chatter. While the college claims 90%, you’ll find reviews where students say only 15-60% of their batch got placed, often in sales or business development roles rather than core technical ones.

The gap between the official claim and the student-reported reality is notable. It suggests placement success is highly uneven, likely dependent on individual skill, the specific department, and market conditions. Top performers can land great offers, but the median outcome might be more modest. For internships, about 70-80% of eligible students secure them, with companies like Wipro and Infosys offering stipends of INR 10,000 to 30,000 per month. A two-month summer internship is mandatory.

So, is the placement cell effective? It gets companies to campus, which is half the battle. But manage your expectations. The 49 LPA figure is an outlier. The working average for most is likely closer to the lower end of that student-reported range.

Fees and Financial Aid at Maharana Pratap Engineering College

The cost structure is fairly straightforward. The total fee for the four-year B.Tech program is INR 2,44,800. That breaks down to about INR 61,200 per year, which is competitive for a private engineering college. For the MCA program, it’s either INR 1,22,000 total or about INR 95,950 per year. BCA runs around INR 50,000 annually.

Living on campus adds to the cost. Hostel and mess fees are INR 65,000 per year, plus an additional INR 3,000 for welfare, bringing the annual hostel bill to INR 68,000. So, a rough total for a four-year B.Tech with hostel comes to approximately INR 5,16,800.

Scholarships are available, primarily for students from reserved categories and those with competitive exam scores like JEE. If you’re eligible, it’s worth checking the specifics on the official college website or through AKTU channels.

Admissions: Eligibility, Cutoffs & Selection Process

For B.Tech, admission is primarily through the Uttar Pradesh Technical Admission Counselling (UPTAC), which considers your JEE Main score or your Class 12 marks. The cutoffs aren’t sky-high. For UPTAC, scores around the 6-7 lakh rank range have been known to secure a seat. That makes it accessible if your JEE score isn’t top-tier.

The process is online. For the 2026 cycle, UPTAC registration is tentatively from late May to mid-July. Keep an eye on the official UPTAC and MPEC website for exact dates.

There are other routes. Direct admission under the management quota is possible for vacant seats. Lateral entry into the second year of B.Tech is open for diploma holders. For M.Tech, a GATE score is preferred. MBA and MCA admissions typically go through CUET PG or relevant state-level exams.

Eligibility for B.Tech is standard: pass Class 12 with Physics and Mathematics, plus one of Chemistry/Computer Science/Biotechnology, with at least 45% marks (40% for reserved categories).

Campus, Hostels and Student Life

The 50-acre campus is a definite plus. It’s green, spacious, and has decent infrastructure. You’ll find air-conditioned classrooms, smart boards, and well-equipped labs for programming, robotics, and core engineering. There are seven libraries, with the central engineering library holding over 40,000 books. Wi-Fi is there, but students say it’s sometimes limited to labs and can be spotty in classrooms.

Hostels are a mixed bag. There are separate buildings for boys and girls, with a capacity for about 650. Rooms are usually twin-sharing and clean. But the complaints are loud and consistent: the mess food is often criticized for poor taste and hygiene. Washroom maintenance is another sore point. A separate hostel for freshers helps curb ragging.

Life outside the hostel is better. There are two cafeterias, though some find them pricey. Sports facilities are good—cricket grounds, basketball and volleyball courts, and indoor games. The social scene is active with fests, cultural events, and celebrity visits. The management enforces a strict 90% attendance rule, which can be a drag, but it keeps the campus buzzing.

Student Reviews: What Maharana Pratap Engineering College Alumni Really Think

Sifting through student feedback online gives you the real picture. The positives are strong. People consistently praise the helpful, knowledgeable faculty and the quality of study materials. The infrastructure—labs, libraries, the green campus—gets high marks. Many say the campus life is good, with plenty of events and activities.

But the negatives are just as consistent. The hostel food situation is almost legendary in its notoriety. Placement transparency is a major concern. Students feel the published high packages don’t reflect the typical experience, and the process isn’t always clear. The 90% mandatory attendance policy, with fines for falling short, is deeply unpopular. Some also note that while the faculty is supportive, teaching can be too exam-focused, and a few departments suffer from inexperienced staff.

The consensus? It’s a college with good potential and resources. Your education is what you make of it. If you’re self-motivated, you can use the infrastructure and faculty support to land good opportunities. But don’t expect the placement cell to hand you a dream job on a platter.

Verdict: Is Maharana Pratap Engineering College Worth It?

MPEC Kanpur is a pragmatic choice for a specific student. If your JEE rank is in the 6-7 lakh range and you want a private engineering college with decent infrastructure in Uttar Pradesh, it’s a viable option. The fees are reasonable for the sector, the faculty is generally supportive, and the campus is conducive to studying.

But go in with your eyes open. This isn’t a brand that will open doors by itself. The placement record is uneven—stellar for a few, mediocre for many. You’ll need to build your own skills through projects, internships, and leetcode, independent of the curriculum. Be prepared for strict attendance rules and, if you’re staying in the hostel, subpar food.

It’s best for students who are self-starters, who can leverage the college’s resources (like the labs and industry ties) without relying solely on its placement promises. If you’re looking for a guaranteed high-paying job or a luxurious campus life, you might be disappointed. But as a solid, mid-tier AKTU affiliate where your effort directly correlates with your outcome, MPEC can work.
