Majhighariani Institute of Technology and Science (MITS) in Rayagada is a private engineering college that makes a strong first impression. Founded in 1999 and spread over a green, sprawling campus, its modern infrastructure and low fees are the immediate draw. But the real story here is the gap between that appealing surface and the on-ground reality for students, particularly when it comes to career outcomes. With an official average placement package of ₹3 LPA for 2025 and a placement rate that student reviews suggest is highly variable, MITS represents a specific, budget-conscious choice in the Odisha engineering landscape—one where your proactivity will determine your payoff.

Courses and Academic Programs at Majhighariani Institute of Technology and Science

MITS operates as a mid-sized institution with a clear focus on engineering. Its program portfolio is standard for a BPUT-affiliated college, with B.Tech as the central offering.

The B.Tech program has an annual intake of 300 students across six branches. Computer Science and Engineering is the largest, with 120 seats, followed by Mechanical and Civil (60 each). Electronics, Electrical, and Biotechnology have smaller intakes of 30-40 seats. The college also offers three-year undergraduate programs in BBA and BCA, and a two-year MCA with a sizable 120-seat intake.

Academically, the calendar follows the BPUT schedule, typically starting in August. A notable feature students mention is the biannual AI-based training sessions. That's a decent attempt to stay relevant. However, faculty quality gets mixed reviews. Some students find professors friendly and interactive, while others point out a noticeable lack of experienced faculty for theoretical classes. The academic culture seems relaxed—maybe too relaxed. One recurring student complaint is a lack of strict discipline regarding attendance for both teachers and students.

MITS Rayagada Placements: Packages, Companies & Reality Check

This is the section that requires the most careful reading. The official placement data for 2025 shows a highest package of ₹6.78 LPA and an average/median of ₹3 LPA. In raw numbers, 29 students were placed in 2024.

The college's listed recruiters are the usual IT services suspects: TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Capgemini, Cognizant, and Tech Mahindra. Deloitte and Concentrix also appear, alongside core companies like L&T and LTIMindtree.

Now for the reality check from student sentiment. The gap between the official placement claim and student perception is notable. While some reviews optimistically cite a 70-80% placement rate, the overwhelming feedback is that opportunities are "limited" and support from the college's training and placement cell is insufficient. A common refrain is that students feel they "have to fight for your job through offline campus." Internships are not provided by the institute; you're on your own to secure them.

So, what's the verdict? The ₹3 LPA average is probably a realistic ceiling for a significant portion of the class. Landing a role with the top recruiters is possible but competitive, and it demands significant independent effort. Don't expect a streamlined, high-volume placement drive.

Fees and Financial Aid at MITS Rayagada

This is arguably MITS's strongest selling point. The fees are remarkably low for a private engineering college.

For the 2026-27 academic year, the total program fee for a four-year B.Tech is approximately ₹2.4 lakhs, with annual tuition around ₹60,000. Add in the annual university exam fee of ₹5,000, and your total four-year academic cost is about ₹2.6 lakhs, excluding hostel and mess. Lateral entry B.Tech is ₹1.8 lakhs total. The BBA and BCA programs cost about ₹1.17 lakhs for the entire three years.

Hostel and mess fees aren't detailed in the brief, but they would be an additional, mandatory cost for out-of-town students.

The college does facilitate scholarships, primarily through government schemes. These include Odisha's Post-matric, Medhabruti, and Prerana scholarships, along with national schemes, all accessible via the Odisha State Scholarship Portal or National Scholarship Portal. Support is most substantial for SC/ST students, with lesser amounts for OBC and general category students.

MITS Rayagada Admissions: Eligibility and Cutoffs

Admissions are entrance-exam driven. For B.Tech, you need a valid JEE Main or OJEE score. For MCA, it's OJEE. For BBA and BCA, admission is based on your Class 12 marks (CBSE/CHSE Odisha or equivalent).

The cutoffs are where MITS's positioning becomes clear. They are not low, but they are accessible. For the 2024 cycle:

• OJEE (General, AI Quota): Ranks between 14,11,097 and 15,00,630.
• JEE Main (General, AI Quota): Ranks between 12,15,298 and 14,15,043.

For specific branches, the closing OJEE rank for Mechanical was 14,11,097 and for Electrical it was 15,00,630. These are high rank numbers, indicating that seats are filled towards the later stages of the OJEE counseling process.

The selection process is standard: you participate in the central/state counseling (JoSAA for JEE Main, OJEE counseling for OJEE) based on your rank, choose MITS in your preferences, and complete document verification and fee payment upon allotment. Admissions for the 2026 batch are open, with JEE Main 2026 results expected in April and OJEE exams scheduled for May 2026.

As a private college, it likely has management quota seats, but details and the fee structure for that quota aren't publicly specified.

Campus Life, Hostels and Infrastructure

If you visit MITS, the campus itself will likely win you over. Students consistently praise the "beautiful scenery," "full of greenery," and "modern infrastructure." It's a spacious, aesthetically pleasing environment.

The infrastructure is comprehensive. Academically, labs are described as well-set up, especially for Mechanical and Computer Science. The library holds nearly 29,000 volumes and has a digital section. Every department has Wi-Fi, and hostels have wireless connectivity too—though an old note mentions 13Mbps speed, so temper your expectations.

Hostels are a big part of the package. There are separate facilities for boys and girls, with three on campus and two in the city. Rooms come with basic furniture (bed, study table, almirah) and have 24/7 water and electricity. Security is present. The medical facility includes a round-the-clock doctor and an ambulance. A Punjab National Bank branch and ATM are on campus.

Where opinions split is on the food. Hostel mess reviews are directly contradictory, ranging from "excellent" to "not so good." That's a coin toss you'll have to live with. For leisure, there's a large playground (nearly 4 acres), facilities for multiple sports, a gym, and a spacious canteen. The college also has a sophisticated 600-seat auditorium and organizes an annual sports fest, Basant Utsav.

The main drawback is location. Being 15 km from Rayagada city center can feel isolating, though the college runs a fleet of 20 buses for transportation.

What Students Say About MITS Rayagada — Reviews & Ratings

Synthesizing student feedback paints a picture of a college with high potential that doesn't always deliver consistently.

The Good: The campus environment is the undisputed champion. Students love the green, peaceful, and modern setting. Infrastructure like 24/7 Wi-Fi, water, and power is reliably appreciated. The low fee structure is a major relief for families. Some faculty members are highlighted as being very supportive and friendly.

The Not-So-Good: Placement anxiety is the dominant theme. The sentiment is that the placement cell could do much more, and opportunities are not as abundant as students hope. Academically, while some faculty are good, there's a noted shortage of experienced teachers for core theory subjects. The lack of strict discipline is seen as a double-edged sword—it's relaxed, but perhaps not always conducive to a rigorous academic atmosphere. The remote location is a practical inconvenience.

It's a classic case of getting what you pay for. The low investment comes with a requirement for high personal initiative.

Verdict: Is Majhighariani Institute of Technology and Science Worth It?

MITS Rayagada is a very specific value proposition. It's not for the student dreaming of high-flying corporate placements with minimal effort. It is, however, a viable option for a budget-conscious student who has secured a moderate JEE Main/OJEE rank and is willing to be the driver of their own education and career.

If your priority is a decent engineering degree from an AICTE-approved, NAAC-accredited college with a pleasant campus, all at an exceptionally low cost, MITS makes logical sense. You'll need to proactively leverage the AI sessions, seek out your own internships, and prepare for placements independently. The college provides a platform, but not a launchpad.

Choose MITS if fee is your primary constraint and you're a self-starter. Look elsewhere if you are heavily reliant on institutional support for placements or want a more consistently rigorous academic environment. It serves its niche, but go in with your eyes wide open to the trade-offs.
