About RSET

For aspiring engineers in Assam, the Royal School of Engineering and Technology (RSET) often pops up in college searches, largely because it sits within Royal Global University's sprawling Guwahati campus. The faculty roster is impressive—many professors hail from IITs and NITs—and the infrastructure matches what you'd expect from a modern private institution. But when you start digging into placement figures, a different picture emerges. Numbers from alumni paint a sobering placement reality, one that's worth understanding before you commit to a four-year B.Tech whose fees can touch ₹8 lakh.

Royal School of Engineering and Technology — Quick Facts

  • Location: Betkuchi, Opposite Tirupati Balaji Temple, NH-37, Guwahati – 781035, Assam
  • Established: 2009
  • Affiliation & Accreditation: Constituent college of Royal Global University (NAAC A Grade, NBA accredited); AICTE approved
  • Flagship programs: B.Tech in Computer Science & Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering
  • Total B.Tech fee (4 years): ₹4.41 Lakhs – ₹8.01 Lakhs (varies by specialization)
  • Average placement package: Student reviews suggest ₹4.4 LPA for recent batches, but packages as low as ₹15k–35k are also cited in older reviews; no official median figure published
  • Placement percentage: Reviews indicate a wide range—from 25% to 60% depending on branch and year, with some batches seeing drastically lower numbers

Courses Offered at RSET Guwahati

RSET offers around 20 full-time programs across undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels. The focus is engineering, and the college has tried to keep pace with new-age fields by introducing specialisations in AI, IoT, and Data Science. Still, intake numbers for individual courses aren't publicly available, which makes it hard to gauge competition during admissions.

B.Tech Programs

Four-year B.Tech degrees are available in:

  • Civil Engineering
  • Computer Science and Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering
  • Artificial Intelligence and Data Science

Lateral entry options (3 years) exist for CSE, Mechanical, and AI & Data Science. The curriculum is marketed as industry-aligned, but specific MoUs or corporate tie-ups beyond a general commitment to practical training are not detailed anywhere.

M.Tech and Integrated Programs

At the master's level, the college runs two-year M.Tech programs in Mechatronics, AI, IoT, Water Resource Development, Data Analytics, Civil, CSE, Thermal and Fluid Engineering, Structural Engineering, and Networking & Web Engineering. There's also an integrated B.Tech-M.Tech track in Computer Science, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering—total fee for the integrated mechanical and civil options comes to ₹7.10 Lakhs.

Doctoral Programs

Ph.D. seats exist, with eligibility requiring a master's degree with 55% and a valid NET score. The application window is currently open till June 8, 2026 for the July session.

Faculty and Academic Environment

The college claims a faculty strength of 25 for around 207 students—a ratio that works out to roughly 1:15. Most of these faculty members hold PhDs, and many have earlier taught at institutions like IITs, IIMs, NITs, GU, and JEC. That's a credible pool for a private college in the Northeast. Student reviews across CollegeDunia and Shiksha are generally positive about teaching quality, calling them "super smart" and "helpful." However, a few comments hint that the administration is strict about grading—"faculties are questioned if they give more marks to students"—which suggests a conservative evaluation culture.

RSET Placements: Packages, Recruiters & Reality Check

There's a glaring absence of official placement data for RSET Guwahati. The university doesn't release an audited placement report, and the Indian Placement Reporting Standards are nowhere to be seen. That forces us to rely on student reviews, and the consensus is not reassuring.

An older review from 2015 mentions a highest salary of around ₹60,000 per month (roughly ₹7.2 LPA annual if you calculate that way, but the figure is unverified) and an average range of ₹15k–35k. More recent accounts from the 2023 batch for RGU's structural engineering program suggest an average of about ₹4.4 LPA, with 50–60% of students getting placed. Another review bluntly states that only about 25% of students land jobs through campus. One particularly stark claim from 2020 says only 14 out of 120 students in a batch were placed. These numbers, if even partially accurate, indicate that placements haven't kept pace with the college's fees.

Recruiters that do visit include IBM, Lava Mobiles, L&T Infotech, Wipro, Capgemini, OIL, JCB, Vodafone, HCL, TCS, Infosys, and L&T. For core branches, names like UltraTech, Bosch, MRF, and various construction firms like Tribeni Construction and L&T Construction are mentioned. The IT and core mix is there, but volumes appear low.

Internships are mandatory for all students. The college says many secured internships at Cochin Shipyard, but again, that's unverified. A student reviewer flatly states that students have to find their own opportunities. So don't bank on a campus-backed internship pipeline.

Fees and Financial Aid at RSET

B.Tech at RSET isn't cheap by North East standards. The total course fee for four years runs from ₹4.41 Lakhs to ₹8.01 Lakhs, with CSE, Civil, and Mechanical all hitting the high end at ₹8.01 Lakhs. M.Tech programs are priced at ₹2 Lakhs total, and lateral entry B.Tech costs ₹5.4 Lakhs for three years.

Hostel expenses add another layer. Annual hostel fees range from ₹35,000 for triple-sharing rooms to ₹1,30,000 for attached-bathroom options. Mess charges are roughly ₹40,000–45,000 per year, so a student staying in a mid-range hostel can expect to pay around ₹1.2–1.5 lakh annually just for living. One-time fees include an admission fee of ₹60,000, registration fee of ₹10,000, and prospectus charges of ₹1,500. Caution money of ₹10,000 is refundable.

Scholarships exist through Royal Global University's schemes—academic merit, sports, artistic talent, and an EWS full-course scholarship. Students apply during the online admission process. For those who qualify, the financial burden could lighten considerably, but the base cost remains high relative to the placement returns.

Admissions: Eligibility, Entrance Exams & Cutoffs

To get into a B.Tech program, you need a valid score in JEE Main, the state-level CEE exam, or the institute's own Royal Joint Entrance Examination (R-JEE). After the test, there's a personal interview. For M.Tech, selection is based on the prior degree's performance followed by an interview—some specialisations may add a group discussion. Lateral entry candidates take an entrance test administered by Royal Global University or a recognised state-level test.

Applications generally open in May-June for the August-September session. PhD admissions for 2026-27 are underway until June 8, 2026, with an entrance exam and interview on June 13.

Cutoffs aren't published, so there's no transparency on the academic level of incoming students. NRI quota seats are supposed to be up to 5% supernumerary as per AICTE norms, but AICTE's own approval for 2025-26 shows "NRI Approval Status: No" for branches like AI & Data Science and Civil Engineering. That suggests the quota may not be active for all courses.

Campus, Hostels and Student Life

Royal Global University's 27-acre campus houses 9 blocks and 6 hostels, with RSET sharing these facilities. The buildings are centrally air-conditioned, and student reviews frequently describe the infrastructure as "beautiful" and "aesthetic." Laboratories are well-stocked for civil, mechanical, electrical, and computer branches, though one review notes that many computers in the lab were not functional—so a spot check is advisable.

The library is computerised with OPAC, an institutional repository, and digital access. Wi-Fi is available campus-wide, including hostel floors, but multiple students complain that it's "pretty bad" in practice. That's a recurring gripe.

Hostels are separate for boys and girls, with an 11-storey boys' hostel that can accommodate over 200 students. Rooms are cleaned regularly, and the overall hygiene is appreciated. The food story is split: some call it "very well cooked and hygienic," while others find it "not good." And there's a strict vegetarian-only rule across the whole campus—something non-vegetarians should factor in.

The canteen, however, earns better marks, described as "really tasty" and multi-cuisine. Transport is covered by a fleet of AC buses running from different parts of Guwahati. Medical facilities are basic first-aid.

Socially, there's a lot happening. Events are held every month, departmental fests every three months, and clubs are active. Celebrity visits from singers, dancers, and industry figures add colour. But rules are tight: hostel timings are strict, and a few reviews mention staff behaviour in the accounts division as poor. The overall campus experience is vibrant if you don't mind the discipline.

Student Reviews: What RSET Alumni Really Think

After combing through CollegeDunia, Shiksha, and a few Quora threads, a clear pattern emerges.

What students appreciate:

  • Infrastructure and campus aesthetics get a unanimous thumbs up. The buildings and labs are genuinely modern.
  • Faculty quality is a strong point. The PhD-heavy team and IIT/NIT background matter in the classroom.
  • Campus life is lively. "Great campus life, many events" is a common refrain.
  • Hostel rooms are clean and well-maintained, even if the food doesn't always match.

Where the discontent lies:

  • Placements are the biggest sore point. "All promises of good placements were false. No good companies came," a 2015 reviewer wrote. The sentiment hasn't changed much in recent years.
  • Value for money is questioned. With fees touching ₹8 lakh and average packages around ₹4–5 LPA, the return on investment doesn't add up for many.
  • Wi-Fi quality frustrates, especially in hostels.
  • The administration's strictness—both in grading and discipline—is a double-edged sword. Some appreciate it, others call it overbearing.
  • An uncomfortable observation: some RGU graduates prefer to highlight their ASTU affiliation instead of Royal Global during job searches, indicating a perceived brand limitation in the local market.

A verbatim summary from one student: "If you want to study engineering here with hopes of getting a high paying job, then maybe stay away from not only RGU but most private colleges here." That's a blunt but honest student take.

Verdict: Is RSET Guwahati Worth It?

RSET works for a specific student profile—someone from Assam or the Northeast who wants a premium private campus experience, values good infrastructure and experienced faculty, and can afford the fee without relying on a fat placement cheque immediately after graduation. If your goal is to use the four years for rigorous academic prep, build a strong profile for GATE/IES or MS abroad, and you're comfortable landing a job through off-campus hustles, the college can serve that purpose. The NAAC A grade and NBA accreditation of the parent university do offer a solid academic umbrella.

But if placement outcomes matter and you're taking a loan, think twice. The placement numbers, as self-reported by students, don't inspire confidence. Several public state colleges and a few NITs in the region deliver better recruitment stats at a fraction of the cost. RSET isn't a bad college, but it's currently a overpriced one for what the job market says it's worth. Check the placement cell's latest activity on the ground, talk to recent alumni before enrolling, and keep your expectations realistic.

Frequently Asked Questions

The total course fees for B.Tech programs at RSET Guwahati for the 2026-2027 session range from ₹4.41 Lakhs to ₹8.01 Lakhs for the complete 4-year duration. This covers tuition fees that vary by branch, with Computer Science, Civil, and Mechanical hitting the upper end at ₹8.01 Lakhs. One-time charges like admission fee (₹60,000), registration (₹10,000), and prospectus (₹1,500) are additional.

For B.Tech admissions, RSET Guwahati accepts scores from JEE Main, the Assam state-level CEE (Combined Entrance Examination), or its own university-level test called the Royal Joint Entrance Examination (R-JEE). The selection process also includes a personal interview after the exam. For M.Tech and lateral entry, the institute conducts its own entrance tests or considers performance in the last qualifying examination.

RSET provides separate hostel accommodation for boys and girls, with around four hostels in total—including an 11-storey boys' hostel with capacity for over 200 students. The annual hostel fee for 2026 ranges from INR 35,000 for triple-sharing rooms to INR 130,000 for attached-bathroom units. Mess charges are approximately INR 40,000 to INR 45,000 per year. Rooms are regularly cleaned and maintained, but the campus follows a strict vegetarian-only food policy and some students find the Wi-Fi quality inconsistent.

Student life at RSET is event-heavy. Clubs and departmental activities run every month, with larger events featuring visiting singers, dancers, and business leaders every few months. The campus is centrally air-conditioned and has sports facilities, a gym, and a multi-cuisine cafeteria. However, hostel timings are strict, and rules are enforced tightly. Reviews praise the lively atmosphere but note that the administration's rigid stance on academics and discipline can feel restrictive. Campus is strictly vegetarian, which is a non-negotiable aspect of daily life.
