Map the admissions route before you fill a form
B.Com admission is decentralised across institutions. The first decision is not “Which entrance exam is best?” but “Which exact degree, college and intake year am I applying to?” A B.Com Programme, B.Com (Hons.), vocational commerce course and specialised commerce degree can have different eligibility, test papers and selection stages. Build a short list first, then make one requirements table for every course-college combination.
For each option, record: qualification and minimum marks; required Class XII subjects; entrance exam and paper combination; the institution’s application; seat-allocation or counselling form; category and document requirements; application and payment deadline; selection method; and fee components. This prevents a common error: taking an entrance test without choosing the subjects a target institution uses, or registering for the test but missing the separate university preference stage.
CUET route: what the 2026 cycle shows
CUET (UG) is used by participating central, state, deemed and private universities, but NTA administers the examination while each university decides its programme eligibility and admission process. The 2026 NTA press release describes CUET as a platform for undergraduate programmes offered by participating institutions. DU’s current 2026 FAQ makes the division explicit: applicants should choose CUET subjects according to the requirements of each university, and universities have their own eligibility rules.
For DU B.Com (Hons.) in 2026-27, the bulletin lists either one List A language plus Mathematics plus any two List B subjects, or one List A language plus Accountancy plus any two List B subjects. DU’s FAQ says merit is based on the best score from those eligible combinations. That is a helpful example of programme-level variation, but it applies only to DU B.Com (Hons.) for the 2026 cycle. Verify the fresh bulletin for the next intake; do not transfer this subject combination to B.Com Programme or another university without a matching official rule.
NTA’s 2026 examination illustrates why applicants should follow notices rather than old calendars. The application process first opened from 3 to 30 January 2026, with fee payment through 31 January. NTA subsequently extended registration through 4 February, allowed fee payment through 7 February, reopened registration from 23 to 26 February, and later offered a short subject-update window from 17 to 19 April. The exam was conducted from 11 to 31 May and 6-7 June 2026 in computer-based mode. Those dates are history for that cycle. A later cycle may set different windows or add notices.
A practical application sequence
- Confirm the target course. Save the exact title, university, college and academic year from the official prospectus. Check whether the institution offers a general programme, honours route or named focus.
- Check eligibility and paper mapping. Match your passed Class XII subjects to the programme-specific CUET or entrance combination. Where applying to several universities, compare all combinations before submitting the test application.
- Register with the exam authority. Use the official portal linked by NTA or the relevant examination body. Enter identity, category and subject details exactly as the notice requests. Pay only through the official payment interface and save the confirmation.
- Check the application record. Confirm that the chosen papers and personal details appear correctly in the final form. During a correction or subject-update period, change only what the official notice permits and retain the corrected confirmation.
- Complete the university application. Many institutions require a separate application, counselling form or preference list. DU’s 2026-27 FAQ says applicants had to fill CSAS (UG) after CUET to enter programme and college preferences. Do not assume the exam registration completes this step.
- Order preferences deliberately. Rank only the colleges and courses you would actually accept, following the platform’s current instructions. A preference list is a selection input, not a guarantee of a seat.
- Track allocation and verification. Monitor official email and portal notices, respond within the stated window, upload or present the required documents and pay the prescribed admission amount. Follow the institution’s current instructions for upgrades, withdrawals or later rounds.
- Keep a complete record. Save the application, fee receipt, exam confirmation, preference list, scorecard, allocation notice, uploaded documents and correspondence in one folder.
This sequence is a planning method rather than a claim that every university uses CUET or CSAS. A state university, private institution, open university or college may use a different exam or merit process. The exact institutional notice governs.
Selection, merit and seat allocation
A qualifying entrance score is not the same thing as an admission offer. Selection may depend on the accepted subject combination, score calculation, category, available seats, course-college preferences and the institution’s allocation rules. DU’s 2026 FAQ says CUET scores determined admission consideration for 2026-27 and Class XII marks could be used to break a tie during CSAS seat allocation. This does not mean that board marks generally substitute for the entrance score, nor does it describe selection at another university.
Avoid using an unofficial “safe score” or historical closing rank as a guaranteed threshold. A past score can help you understand a specific round only if the institution published the underlying list with the same programme, category, quota and allocation stage. It does not predict next year’s competition. Where an official merit formula is available, calculate your expected score using that formula and list the preferences you would accept at more than one level of selectivity.
Documents and payment checks
Before submission, review the live portal checklist. It may request a Class X certificate for date of birth, Class XII marksheet or appearing-candidate proof, photograph, signature, category or disability certificate, identity proof and qualifying-exam details. The exact set and upload rules vary by authority, so this list is a preparation aid, not a universal mandate. If a result is pending, check when the pass certificate must be uploaded and whether a provisional seat can be held.
Separate application fee, entrance-exam fee, counselling or seat-allocation fee, college admission fee, examination charges, hostel costs and refundable deposits in your budget. A fee amount on a college page may be payable only after selection and may exclude semester examinations. Keep transaction references and verify payment status on the portal before attempting a second payment. For payment discrepancies, use the authority’s listed helpdesk and retain both the portal status and bank confirmation.
If you are planning the next intake
As of the October 2026 research check, the official examples available in this packet concern 2026-27 admission. The current University of Delhi bulletin and NTA notices are useful for understanding the sequence, but they do not establish the 2027-28 subject combination, deadline or schedule. Use them as a checklist of decisions. When the next prospectus appears, confirm the exact programme, subject papers, application portal, dates and fee in the new documents before acting. Do not rely on a past calendar copied into a coaching page or a general B.Com article.
