B.Tech fees depend on the institution and student category
There is no single fee schedule for a B.Tech degree. The amount depends on the institution, academic year, programme, admission route, category and whether you use hostel or other facilities. A course-level aggregate cannot tell you what a student will actually pay. Compare the official fee notice for your target campus and batch, and separate tuition from accommodation, mess, deposits and payment adjustments.
IIT Bombay’s Academic Office offers a clear example of why those parts should not be collapsed. Its page “Fees payable by UG new entrants - 2026” gives a schedule for students admitted through JEE Advanced 2026 for the Autumn Semester 2026-27. For Indian GEN, EWS and OBC-NCL entrants, it lists academic fees of ₹1,34,150 and hostel fees of ₹19,950. It separately shows a ₹25,000 seat acceptance amount already paid, excluding ₹5,000 JoSAA processing charges, and a resulting balance payable of ₹1,29,100. A semester mess advance of ₹22,500 is listed separately. For Indian SC, ST and PwD entrants, the listed academic fee is ₹34,150, hostel ₹19,950, seat acceptance amount ₹10,000, balance ₹44,100 and separate mess advance ₹22,500. These figures describe that institution, route, entrant group and semester only. See the IIT Bombay entrant fee schedule.
This example is not a quote for another IIT, private college, state university or 2027-28 student. It also illustrates why “fees payable” may differ from the sum of recurring charges: part of the admission payment may already have been collected through counselling, while a separate processing charge or mess advance may be excluded. Read the notes and footnotes next to the table.
How to compare the full cost
Create a cost sheet for each college with the same rows. Record academic fee by semester, mandatory institute charges, hostel and mess, one-time admission or caution deposits, examination and laboratory charges, insurance or student activity fees, and any transport or equipment cost. Mark each amount as refundable or non-refundable and note when payment is due. A fee described as annual may cover only a particular academic component; verify whether there are separate hostel or service bills.
The distinction between academic fee, hostel fee and mess advance matters. A student living at home may not pay hostel or mess charges. A student taking a hostel may have room, electricity or maintenance components and a variable mess bill. Deposits can be returned only under the institution’s conditions. Scholarship support may reduce an amount for eligible students, but the rules can differ by category, income, programme and application status. Do not subtract a scholarship from the expected bill until the institution confirms the award and payment timing.
Check whether the quoted figure is gross, net of a seat acceptance payment, inclusive of a deposit, or the balance due after prior payments. Ask whether a payment made through counselling is credited to the first-semester bill, whether the processing fee is refundable and what happens if you withdraw. Keep receipts and the official circular. If a table lists different routes, use the row for your admission route; IIT Bombay’s page, for example, separates JEE Advanced, INMO and UCEED entrants. A route-specific amount may not apply even within the same institution.
Budget for the whole programme
A first-semester schedule is not the full cost of a four-year degree. Fees may be revised for later semesters; IIT Bombay states that it reserves the right to revise fees in subsequent semesters. That means a current entrant schedule is useful for the first bill but does not guarantee the same number every year. For planning, use only the official notices available and keep future semester amounts as estimates rather than confirmed fees. Add living costs that are not billed by the college, such as travel, books, a laptop, personal expenses or rent if you do not live in a hostel.
Compare like with like: one college’s academic fee against another’s academic fee, then add accommodation and food separately based on your living plan. If you compare an all-in hostel estimate with tuition alone, the cheaper option may only look cheaper. Note the academic year and billing period beside every number. If a fee notice says 2026-27, do not present it as the upcoming 2027-28 schedule.
Where to find the current notice
Start from the official institute website, then open the fee circular linked for your exact academic year and entrant group. IIT Bombay’s fees structure index lists separate academic and hostel circulars for 2026-27 and links to older schedules. An index page helps you identify the correct edition; the circular or entrant table supplies the actual amounts. For another institution, look for its Academic Office, Admissions, Finance or Student Services pages. Avoid relying on old brochures or third-party fee aggregators when the official schedule exists.
Before accepting an offer, ask the admissions or finance office to confirm in writing: the first payment due, what has already been credited, whether hostel is guaranteed, what the mess advance covers, which charges recur, which deposits are refundable, how category concessions work, and whether later revisions are possible. If you are using an education loan, ask the lender which components are eligible and whether the loan can be disbursed before the college deadline. A scholarship awarded later may not solve an upfront payment gap.
What is known for 2027-28
The cited official IIT Bombay schedule is for 2026-27 and does not establish the fee for 2027-28. This page therefore does not provide a national average or claim that a future fee has been announced. Once the 2027-28 prospectus and fee circular are published, compare the exact category and route rows and check later amendments. Until then, use older official fees only as a labelled budgeting reference, not as a confirmed offer or invoice. For a personal estimate, add the current official tuition, accommodation, food and one-time charges for your chosen college, then keep the parts separate so that later changes are easy to update.
