MPH admission: a practical route map
Admission to a Master of Public Health programme is managed by the university or institute offering that exact award. Applicants should not assume that the same national entrance examination, application portal or counselling process covers all MPH seats. Start by identifying the awarding institution, campus, programme name and intake year. Then read that intake’s prospectus and official admissions notices together; a general webpage may remain online after a deadline or policy changes.
1. Match the programme before applying
Confirm that you are applying to a graduate-entry MPH, not an integrated BSc-MPH, an MPH with a named concentration or a Master of Hospital Administration. These programmes may appear under the same academic division but have different eligibility and selection rules. IIPHG's current admissions page, for example, lists MPH, MPH-PHN and MHA as separate full-time, on-campus postgraduate programmes. Its separate integrated BSc-MPH page describes a five-year route beginning after Class 12. Check the actual degree title and awarding body on the application form.
2. Check eligibility and prepare a complete application
Read the accepted degree disciplines, minimum marks, result-submission deadline and category rules for your cohort. Final-year students may be allowed to apply conditionally, but the final offer can depend on producing the required result before classes. IIPHG's current admissions page permits final-year undergraduates to apply on that condition. That does not establish the rule at other institutions.
Prepare the documents listed in the current notice. Typical application packets can ask for academic records, a degree or provisional certificate, identity proof, a photograph and category or equivalence documents where applicable. Requirements are not identical, so use the portal's checklist as controlling. If the institution asks for a statement of purpose, answer its actual prompt rather than submitting a generic career essay. IIPHG's 2026 page requests a 250-500 word statement outlining motivation and career goals; treat the word limit as specific to that published process.
3. Identify the selection route
An MPH provider may select on academic merit, an institution-run test, interview, written assessment, national examination or a weighted combination. Verify whether the test is mandatory for all eligible candidates, whether shortlisting occurs before interview, how ties are handled, and whether work experience is scored or merely considered. Do not prepare for NEET, CUET, CAT or another exam unless the current prospectus for your exact programme names it.
For IIPHG's published 2026 process, shortlisted candidates sit an online MCQ screening test, then may be invited to an interview; the page assigns 40% to the screening test, 50% to interview and 10% to undergraduate performance. It says the test covers basic mathematics, logical reasoning, general knowledge with a health and hospital focus, and English. These are IIPHG's 2026 particulars, not a template for other schools or future cycles. IIPHG 2026 admission process
4. Track cycle dates and communications
Record the application opening, closing time and date, test or interview date, result window, document verification and fee-payment deadline. IIPHG's current page lists an indicative timeline with a 31 May 2026 application deadline, 7 June screening test, 11 June result declaration, interviews in mid-June, and programme commencement on 3 August. These dates are historical once that cycle passes; they are included only to show the kind of schedule an official notice may contain. Do not treat them as open dates for the next intake. Check the institution's current portal and notices before acting.
Use the email address and phone number supplied by the official admissions office if the portal is unclear. Save the submitted application, payment confirmation, test instructions and offer letter. Monitor the portal for corrections, because an institution may treat a portal notice as formal communication.
5. Understand the offer and confirmation stage
A merit list or provisional offer may not mean your admission is final. The institution can require original-document verification, completion of the bachelor’s degree, payment of an advance or first instalment, and submission of declarations by a deadline. IIPHG's 2024 handbook describes provisional offers and original document verification for its then-applicable intake; its 2026 page describes fee payment and instalment information in the offer. Follow the current cohort’s offer letter and refund rules rather than carrying forward an older procedure.
If you receive an offer, ask for the complete payable amount and schedule, hostel availability and conditions, refund policy, and dates for reporting. If you cannot accept, follow the official withdrawal process and retain proof of submission. Avoid paying through unofficial links or relying on an agent's promise of a seat.
Applicant checklist
- Verify the exact programme, campus and awarding institution.
- Save the current prospectus and admissions notification with its publication date.
- Confirm degree and marks eligibility, including pending results and category documentation.
- Identify the specified entrance or selection process; do not infer one from another institution.
- Enter academic details exactly as shown on transcripts and submit readable documents.
- Track portal messages, test instructions, interview communication and offer deadlines.
- Before accepting, verify the full cost, refund terms and practical requirements for fieldwork or internship.
Meeting eligibility is only permission to compete for a place. Selection depends on the institution’s published process, available seats and the strength of the applicant pool.
