The full form of MDS is Master of Dental Surgery, which is a post-degree course awarded for a course or program in the field of dentistry. The duration of Master of Dental Surgery is 3 years. In the dental course, you are given 1-year training. After M.B.B.S., Master of Dental Surgery is the most sought degree in the field of medical science which enables one to become an expert dentist.

Eligibility for MDS course
The basic qualification for MDS course is a BDS degree. One must have a Bachelor’s degree in Dental Surgery or a provisional passing certificate in BDS an equivalent qualification from any Indian dental university recognized by Dental Council of India (DCI).
Also, one must have completed or been in the process of completion of the one-year internship or practical training. This training or internship done in the respective dental college should be approved or recognized by the Government of India.
Branches of MDS

Oral Maxillofacial Surgery
Oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS or OMS) specializes in surgery of the face, mouth, and jaws. these are dentists who treat conditions, defects, injuries and esthetic aspects of the mouth, teeth, jaws and face through surgery. They are commonly referred to as an oral surgeon.
Operative Dentistry
Restoration of parts of the teeth that are defective as a result of trauma, disease, or abnormal development to a state of normal health, function and esthetic comes under operative dentistry.

Prosthetic dentistry or Prosthodontics
Prosthetic dentistry or Prosthodontics is also known as Restorative dentistry which deals with the procedures and management that are performed to keep your mouth healthy and functional. These procedures include making dentures, putting in dental implants, fillings cavities, and crowns etc.
Orthodontics

Dentistry in Army
Army Dental Core is a collaborative branch of the Army Medical Corps. The Chief of the Dental Corps gets the rank of Colonel and is also called the Deputy Director of Dental Services. Navy and Air Force have separate departments of dentistry. There are five specialists for diverse branches of dental care. For the training of dental mechanical and dental protectors, they are taught at Armed Forces Medical College, Poona. The recruitment is in the form of the first short service commission. The permanent commission is given to some selected executives.

MDS courses are of 3 years duration. Unless you get a government MDS seat, this course can get very costly to complete. In comparison, diploma courses are of 2 years or less in duration depending on where you are doing the course. Remember money spent to learn a dental skill is never a waste as you will use this new skill and earn more but you have to be selective in choosing the right course and branch for you.
