MIT Tuition and Fees for International Students: Programme-Specific Costs
MIT does not have one tuition price for every student. A reliable estimate starts with the exact programme and academic year, then separates tuition and mandatory fees from housing, meals, insurance, travel and personal spending. The published undergraduate budget is annual and includes estimates; Sloan pages may publish tuition alone or a total schedule for a named class. Do not multiply one figure across a degree unless the source confirms its period and the calculation is labeled as an estimate.
Undergraduate annual cost of attendance
MIT Student Financial Services lists a cost of attendance of USD 92,760 for 2026–27 for undergraduates. MIT calls it an annual student budget: a one-year estimate used to assess financial need, not an invoice for the entire degree. The listed components are USD 66,720 tuition, a USD 420 student-life fee, USD 14,090 housing, USD 8,104 food, USD 930 books and supplies, and USD 2,496 estimated personal expenses. Together these entries total USD 92,760.
That budget mixes billed charges and non-billed estimates. Tuition and the student-life fee are Institute charges. Housing and food depend on a student’s choices; books and personal expenses are estimates. MIT notes that additional health insurance is required. A travel allowance can be included based on a student’s address, so the cited table does not state a single travel amount. Before accepting an offer, ask Student Financial Services how insurance, billing dates, housing choices and travel allowances apply to your case.
The annual COA is a planning baseline, not the entire price of a four-year degree. Multiplying USD 92,760 by four produces only a flat-rate illustration: it assumes the same budget in every year, no aid and no cost changes. Those assumptions are not guaranteed. MIT says many students pay less because of need-based aid. Compare your personal aid assessment with the published budget, billed charges and actual living choices instead of treating the headline estimate as your family’s final contribution.
Graduate and Sloan costs use different bases
Graduate tuition and fees are published by programme and can change by academic year. MIT’s graduate funding page says doctoral students often receive departmental support, while master’s funding is more limited and depends on the programme. A single graduate-wide cost number would conceal those differences. Use the individual department’s tuition and funding pages and confirm whether the amount is per term, per year or for the entire programme.
For a specific comparison, MIT Sloan lists full-time MBA tuition of USD 91,892 for academic year 2026–27, including an annual MBA fee of USD 2,200. This is tuition for the stated academic year; it is not an all-in cost of attendance. Living expenses, health insurance, books, travel and personal spending must be considered separately. Applicants should revisit the financing page for their entry year because a published 2026–27 rate does not establish a 2027–28 price.
The Sloan Fellows MBA page lists tuition of USD 161,663 for 2026–27 and says textbooks are excluded. It is a distinct one-year, full-time programme for experienced leaders. Do not treat the number as an annual rate for the two-year MBA or as a complete budget. The Executive MBA page gives another kind of measure: USD 222,205 is the total schedule identified for the Class of 2028 that matriculated in September 2026. Hotel and travel can add costs. Because this total is attached to that class, do not project it to the next class without a new official schedule.
These rows do not represent equivalent prices. The undergraduate amount is a one-year attendance budget; the MBA and Fellows amounts are tuition figures; the EMBA amount is a class-specific total schedule. Comparing them without duration, included services, aid, living costs and sponsorship would be misleading.
Funding changes the net price
MIT states that its undergraduate financial-aid programme meets 100% of demonstrated need for international undergraduates. International applicants use the Student Financial Services process, including the CSS Profile and parent tax or income documentation. The published COA and a student’s assessed family contribution are different: the first is a budget estimate, the second follows MIT’s assessment of submitted financial information. Apply for aid separately and meet its document deadlines; do not assume the admissions deadline covers financial-aid paperwork.
Graduate support works differently. MIT says departmental funding is usually available for doctoral students and can come through a research or teaching appointment or fellowship. Such an offer may cover tuition and health insurance and provide salary or stipend. Master’s support is more limited and programme-dependent. Sloan degrees may have scholarships, loans or employer sponsorship, but those are not covered by the undergraduate full-need commitment. Read the exact degree’s award conditions and financing page before treating an amount as available.
Build a defensible estimate
Use a budget sheet with separate rows for tuition, mandatory fees, housing and meals, insurance, travel and books or personal costs. For each number, record currency, source year, programme, payment period and whether the amount is billed or estimated. Then list confirmed funding as grant, loan, stipend or paid appointment. A grant reduces the amount owed; a loan defers it; an assistantship may require work; and a stipend may be taxable. Avoid comparing unlike offers as if they were cash awards of the same value.
For undergraduates, use MIT’s cost calculator and aid process for a personalized estimate. For graduate applicants, ask the department how funding is decided and whether a written offer will state the duration, duties and renewal conditions. For Sloan applicants, compare tuition with the programme’s living-cost guidance and any award or employer support. A website amount is a planning input; the current offer letter and bill determine your individual obligations.
What to verify before paying a deposit
The figures here refer to 2026–27 or the specifically named EMBA class; no general 2027–28 fee schedule was projected. Reopen the official page for your intake and verify tuition, mandatory fees, insurance, payment schedule, living estimates and refund terms. Compare the net award or funding package with the cost categories it actually covers. Keep all values in USD; a currency conversion requires a separate dated exchange-rate source and calculation. The next useful step is to download the current programme’s fee page and mark each budget line as known, variable or still to be confirmed.
