Cambridge undergraduate applications: 2027 entry
Cambridge undergraduate applications have a separate timetable and several institution-specific steps. The current Cambridge timeline is for 2027 entry. As of 1 November 2026, the main October deadlines have passed, so this guide is most useful for applicants already in the process and for the limited January routes still listed by the University. It is not a late-application route: applicants who missed the deadline should contact Cambridge or UCAS for advice and use the next published cycle when planning a future application.
Cambridge requires undergraduate applicants to apply through UCAS. The UCAS form is only one part of the process: most applicants must also complete My Cambridge Application, and some courses require an admissions test, written work, portfolio or other additional assessment. The course and College pages determine which materials apply to your case. Do not rely on another applicant's checklist or reuse a previous year's test dates.
Deadlines and what remains open
For most applicants to 2027 entry, Cambridge lists 15 October 2026 at 6pm UK time as the UCAS submission deadline. It lists 22 October 2026 at 6pm UK time for My Cambridge Application, with transcripts due on that date when required. The University advises that transcripts may take several weeks to obtain. Its UCAS instructions say that, for 2027 entry, Cambridge will not download or review additional documents uploaded to UCAS; any documents Cambridge requires must be supplied through My Cambridge Application or through the College you apply to.
The timetable lists two limited January exceptions. The deadline is 13 January 2027 at 6pm UK time for the Foundation Year and for some courses open to mature students applying to a mature College. These are not general extensions to the main deadline. Check the Foundation Year and mature-student pages to confirm whether your intended course, age category, College route and qualifications fit. Applicants on a January route must submit My Cambridge Application by 20 January 2027 at 6pm UK time.
The timeline places most interview invitations in November, with some arriving in early December, and most College interviews in the first three weeks of December. For the main October route, the scheduled decision date is 27 January 2027. Cambridge says final decisions for applicants taking school-leaving examinations are confirmed after results in August 2027. These are process dates, not assurances that an application will be shortlisted or admitted. Monitor UCAS and Cambridge communications for requests and individual instructions.
UCAS and the Cambridge form
Choose your course before submitting. Cambridge says you can submit only one Cambridge application in a year and cannot apply to Cambridge and Oxford in the same year. A course selection appears before the College preference on the UCAS form. Take time to compare course content, assessment and entry requirements, then decide whether to name a College or make an open application. You should not select a College only because of its name or general reputation.
If you prefer not to name a College, you can make an open application. Cambridge allocates it after the closing date to a College that has received fewer applications per place for your course. Colleges treat open applicants in the same way as direct applicants, but Colleges differ in entry requirements, interview format, accommodation, facilities and support. Once allocated, you cannot transfer to another College through this route. Cambridge does not recommend an open application if you will be under 18 when you start. Mature applicants aged 21 or older applying through the mature route are allocated to one of three mature Colleges: Hughes Hall, St Edmund's or Wolfson.
After submitting UCAS, most applicants complete My Cambridge Application. Cambridge may require an academic transcript, particularly for international qualifications or where otherwise specified. The 2027 instructions direct applicants to submit required extra documents through My Cambridge Application or their College rather than uploading them to UCAS. A school or college reference is required; Cambridge says an application submitted without the reference will not be considered. Applicants should arrange references and transcripts early and check that the referee and documents are submitted through the correct channel.
Graduate Course in Medicine applicants follow a special route: Cambridge's 2027 timeline says they do not need My Cambridge Application, but must submit an additional application form by 22 October 2026. Music Award applicants should check the separate award process. These exceptions illustrate why the main undergraduate route should not be assumed to cover every course.
Tests, interviews and selection
Cambridge admissions tests are tied to course choice. For 2027 entry, the published test guidance lists pre-registration tests including ESAT for Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, Engineering, Natural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine; TMUA for Computer Science, Economics and Mathematics; UCAT for Medicine and Graduate Medicine; and LNAT for Law. Other courses may have College assessments arranged after shortlisting, for which the applicant does not register in advance. Course and College instructions take precedence over a broad list, and tests may change in later cycles.
Cambridge distinguishes tests taken before shortlisting from assessments arranged after an interview invitation. It says pre-shortlisting test results help Colleges decide whom to invite to interview; there is no pass or fail mark, and results are considered with the rest of the application. Applicants invited to interview may be asked to take a College assessment arranged by the College. An assessment can examine subject knowledge, relevant skills, or understanding of topics connected to the chosen course. Cambridge notes that assessments are designed to challenge applicants and that candidates are not expected to answer every question correctly.
An interview is not a general conversation detached from academic work. Applicants should be ready to discuss ideas and demonstrate how they think about subject material, but should follow the specific preparation guidance Cambridge provides. Do not attempt to memorise model answers or infer an offer from an interview invitation. Cambridge's decision uses the application as a whole, and the specific College and course procedures matter.
International applicants and document planning
International applicants use the same broad UCAS route for undergraduate courses, with additional documentation where Cambridge requests it. Cambridge's timeline says transcripts are often relevant to international qualifications and notes that obtaining them can take several weeks. Plan for certified translations when necessary and follow the exact instructions in My Cambridge Application or from the College. Do not email sensitive documents or send them through an unofficial intermediary unless Cambridge specifically directs you to do so.
Entry requirements depend on the course and the qualification system. Cambridge publishes country- and qualification-specific advice for international applicants, as well as English-language requirements. A general minimum should not be treated as a guarantee of an offer: the course page and College guidance should be checked for required subjects, grades, tests and English evidence. If your qualification is not listed or its equivalence is unclear, contact Cambridge admissions before choosing a route.
Visa arrangements are separate from admission. A course offer does not itself grant permission to study in the UK. Applicants who need immigration permission should check Cambridge's international student guidance and current GOV.UK Student visa requirements, then follow the University's Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies process after accepting an eligible offer. Visa timing, evidence and financial rules can change independently of Cambridge's admission calendar.
Application checklist
- Confirm the course, entry year, qualification prerequisites, English evidence and any course-specific test.
- For 2027 entry, verify whether the main October route has already closed for you; use the 13 January 2027 date only if you qualify for the Foundation Year or a specified mature-student course.
- Submit UCAS and then complete My Cambridge Application by the applicable deadline. For required 2027 documents, use My Cambridge Application or the relevant College, not an extra UCAS upload.
- Arrange a complete school or college reference and request any transcript early.
- Choose a College with its course-related requirements and practical arrangements in mind, or make an open application only if you are comfortable with the allocation process.
- Register separately for any pre-registration admissions test and confirm whether a College assessment follows shortlisting.
- Monitor UCAS, My Cambridge Application and College communications, then recheck official deadlines before taking action. Dates and assessment rules here are scoped to Cambridge's published 2027 undergraduate cycle; future applicants must use the timetable for their own year.
The most reliable application plan is course-specific and deadline-led. The official Cambridge application timeline and course instructions should remain open beside your checklist, because one missed transcript, reference, test registration or College request can matter as much as the main UCAS submission.
