What is Polytechnic?

Polytechnic combines two words: poly and technic. Poly means many arts, and technic means technology. So, a polytechnic diploma is a course where you learn multiple technologies across fields like mechanical, electrical, electronics, computers, communication, and instrumentation.

It's a 3-year regular course requiring class attendance. The focus is on skills and practical knowledge. Theoretical knowledge takes a backseat because the primary purpose is practical skill development.

Fees at government colleges are low. For people with financial constraints who still want a solid education, a polytechnic diploma is an excellent option. Private institute fees are higher than government ones, but career options are similar for both.

Eligibility for Polytechnic

No special qualification is needed. You can enroll after high school or after intermediate. After high school, it's a 3-year course. After intermediate, it's 2 years. Students who took Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics in high school are eligible. Age relaxation is given for reserved categories.

How to get admission in polytechnic college?

The admission process varies by state. Some states require entrance exams. Others create a merit list based on 10th-grade marks, where higher-ranked candidates get admission. Every polytechnic college has limited seats per course, and many candidates apply.

Admission based on Merit

Merit is the basis for admission in states like Rajasthan and Odisha. No admission test is required. Students register online, providing general information like name, address, board name, and marks. An application fee, which varies by state, is paid online.

Merit lists are created based on 10th or 12th marks. Candidates with high marks are called for counseling, where they must submit documents for admission. Therefore, good marks in class 10 or 12 are essential for polytechnic admission.

Admission based on Entrance Exam

Many states require an entrance test. After submitting the application form, an 'Admit card' is issued online as a hall ticket. The test is offline and written. Candidates who clear the exam are called for counseling, and admission is based on their entrance exam rank.

To clear this exam, candidates must study well to secure a good rank.

The pattern of Entrance Exam

The entrance exam is offline in every state. It's objective type (multiple choice) with four options per question, one correct. Some states have negative marking, where numbers are deducted for wrong answers. The questions cover science and mathematics.

Counseling and Admission

Counseling occurs after the entrance exam, based on the student's rank. If a student doesn't get a good rank, they may get a private college, where fees are generally Rs. 30,000 to Rs. 35,000 per year. Conversely, a good rank can secure a government college, with fees between Rs. 8,000 to Rs. 12,000 per year. Many private colleges also offer high-quality education and placements.

The Polytechnic 3-Year Diploma Course is a full technical degree approved by AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education). It's known for teaching practical aspects and basics. If a student wants to increase both theoretical and practical knowledge, they should pursue further studies after completing the diploma.

For example, a student with a diploma in Electrical Engineering can get admission into the second year of B.Tech in Electrical Engineering. This is called Lateral Entry in B.Tech. After B.Tech, one can pursue M.Tech. A B.Tech degree increases job opportunities and salary scales.

B.Tech Lateral Entry Scheme

The most popular option after a 3-Year Diploma is B.Tech or BE. Candidates must join the engineering entrance examination. Many colleges offer lateral entry, allowing diploma holders to join directly in the second year or third semester. Some colleges hold separate entrance exams for diploma holders under the Lateral Entry Scheme.

AMIE Certification

Another option for diploma holders is the AMIE (Associate Member of the Institutions of Engineers) certification. This professional certification is equivalent to BE. The AMIE examination has two sections and typically takes 4 years. However, polytechnic diploma holders are exempt from Section A (project work), so they can complete the AMIE certification in about 3 years.

Job Opportunities after Polytechnic

After the 3-Year Diploma, opportunities open in both government and private sectors. Private companies like Wipro, Mahindra, and Tata offer placements. Many government companies also recruit from polytechnic institutes.
