Top 100 Engineering Colleges
Last updated: April 20, 2026
The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) has released its fifth edition of rankings. The HRD Ministry announced the results in a program on Tuesday. The rankings cover colleges, universities, and specialized institutions for engineering, law, management, and medicine.
For engineering colleges, NIRF published a list of the top 100. Chennai's Indian Institute of Technology Madras secured the number one spot. Mumbai's Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay is number two, while Indian Institute of Technology Delhi ranks third. Notably, the top six positions on this list are all held by IITs.
In India, a large number of students take the challenging IIT entrance exams. Students also take admission tests for state technical universities. During the ranking announcement, Prakash Javadekar stated that participation of all public institutions in the National Institutional Ranking Framework will become mandatory from the year 2019.
The National Institutional Ranking Framework, which issues these college and university rankings, began in 2015. It released its first list on April 4, 2016. These lists help intermediate students select colleges or universities for further studies. It's important to note that NIRF prepares rankings based on several criteria: research and business processes, accessibility and inclusiveness, teaching and learning resources, and undergraduate outcomes.
