Eastern Academy of Science & Technology (EAST) in Bhubaneswar is a study in contrasts. Established in 2001, this private college on a 25-acre campus along the Prachi River offers one of the most affordable B.Tech degrees in Odisha, with annual tuition around ₹69,000. It's affiliated with the state-run Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT), which gives its degree a baseline credibility. But talk to recent students, and you'll hear a different story—one of declining student strength, an inconsistent placement cell, and a sense that the institution's better days might be behind it. For a student on a tight budget who is disciplined and doesn't expect the college to hand them a career, EAST can work. For anyone seeking a vibrant campus life and robust on-campus recruitment, the reality here demands a second look.

Courses and Academic Programs at Eastern Academy of Science & Technology

EAST runs a standard set of engineering programs under the BPUT syllabus. At the undergraduate level, the B.Tech program has an intake of about 435 seats spread across seven specializations: Computer Science & Engineering (CSE), Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, Electronics & Telecommunication (ETC), Electrical & Electronics (EEE), and Environmental Engineering. M.Tech programs are offered in CSE, Electronics & Communication, Environmental Engineering, and Machine Design, with small batches of 9-18 students. There's also a Diploma (Polytechnic) in Mechanical and Electrical streams.

The academic rhythm is dictated entirely by BPUT's calendar. That means semester exams in Dec/Jan and May/June, and a 10-point CGPA system. Faculty strength is reported at 31-40 members, with a limited number of PhD holders. The consensus from student reviews is that the remaining senior faculty are supportive and approachable, but high turnover is a recurring complaint. "Most good lecturers have left," as one 2023 review put it. You'll be following a prescribed state university curriculum. That's not a bad thing—it's standardized—but don't expect cutting-edge electives or a dynamic academic environment here. The learning burden, especially for placement preparation, falls largely on the student.

EAST Placements: Packages, Companies & Reality Check

This is where the official narrative and ground reality diverge most sharply. The college's placement cell claims an 80%+ placement rate, with a highest package of ₹10-12 LPA for CSE (some unverified claims say ₹15 LPA). The average package is cited between ₹3.2 and ₹4.5 LPA, with a median around ₹3.5 LPA. Recruiters like TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Tech Mahindra, and Capgemini are listed as regular visitors.

Now, the student reality check. Across forums like Quora and Shiksha, the working number for on-campus placement is far lower—students and alumni estimate it at 30-50%. The gap is notable. Many secure jobs through off-campus pooled drives or mass recruiters, not directly via the college. Reviews from 2023-24 are blunt, calling the placement cell "inactive." For core branches like Mechanical and Civil, on-campus opportunities are especially sparse, with most students pivoting to IT roles or preparing for GATE and government exams.

So, what's the truth? The top recruiter names are probably accurate for the occasional visit. That ₹4.5 LPA average is a decent outcome for a regional private college. But you should walk in with the understanding that securing a job will likely require significant off-campus hustle. The college degree gets you in the door; your own coding skills or core knowledge will get you the offer.

Fees and Financial Aid at Eastern Academy of Science & Technology

Affordability is EAST's strongest, most unambiguous selling point. The B.Tech tuition fee is ₹69,000 per year, making the total four-year cost approximately ₹2.76 lakhs—exceptionally low for a private engineering college. Add to this hostel and mess charges, which range from ₹29,500 to ₹36,000 annually for non-AC accommodation. There are mandatory additional fees like a ₹1,000 application fee, a ₹2,500 per semester exam fee, and a one-time library/tech fee of ₹3,000.

Financial aid is available primarily through state government schemes. Scholarships for SC/ST/OBC students are processed via the state's PRERANA portal. The college also mentions merit-based fee waivers for OJEE toppers, though the specifics and number of such waivers aren't widely documented. When you compare the total cost of a B.Tech here—even with hostel—to other private options in the region, the value proposition is clear. You're paying for a BPUT degree at a fraction of the typical cost.

Admissions: Eligibility, Cutoffs & Selection Process

Admission to the B.Tech program is through entrance exam ranks. The college accepts both JEE Main (All India) and OJEE (Odisha state) scores. Selection is centralized through the OJEE counseling process. The 2024 cutoff ranks give a clear picture of the demand: for the General category in Round 1, the CSE branch closed at an All India rank of 629,578 and a Home State rank of 1,507,124. For Mechanical Engineering, the Home State cutoff was around 1,501,692.

Those numbers tell a story. They're not highly competitive, which aligns with the college's current positioning. There's also a management quota, reserving about 15% of seats for direct admission, though this still requires a valid entrance score (JEE Main/OJEE). For M.Tech, the valid entrance exam is GATE. The process is straightforward. If you have a moderate OJEE or JEE Main rank and are budget-conscious, EAST will likely be an option during counseling.

Campus, Hostels and Student Life

The 25-acre campus is frequently praised for its peaceful, green setting by the Prachi River. It's a quiet place, which students call conducive to studying. But that quiet has another dimension in recent reviews—some mention the campus "feels empty lately," citing low student strength in certain branches.

Infrastructure is a mixed bag. The library has a digital DELNET membership and over 50,000 physical books. There are over 55 computer stations and specialized labs for each department, though student feedback mentions equipment is "functional but aging." A 24/7 Wi-Fi campus is claimed, with unverified speeds of 10-20 Mbps.

Hostel life is where experiences split. The girls' hostel generally receives better reviews (rated around 3.5/5) for security and maintenance. The boys' hostel (rated ~2.8/5) has consistent complaints about cleanliness and upkeep. Food in the mess is routinely described as "average." The college provides bus transport covering Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, which is essential given the location. There's an on-campus pharmacy and first-aid, with tie-ups to local hospitals. Don't expect a bustling social scene or spectacular facilities. You get a functional, no-frills base for your studies.

Student Reviews: What EAST Alumni Really Think

Synthesizing feedback from CollegeDunia, Shiksha, Quora, and Reddit paints a consistent picture of an institution past its peak. The sentiment is mixed to declining.

The positives are specific: the serene location, the helpful nature of some senior faculty, and the undeniable low cost. Alumni from the 2010-2016 batches have built solid careers, particularly in IT, showing the degree can be a valid launchpad.

But the negatives are recurring and administrative. "Bad management" leading to high faculty turnover is a constant refrain. The placement cell's inactivity is a major concern. The decline in student intake, with some branches reportedly having batches as small as 10 students, raises questions about campus vibrancy and peer learning. The advice from current students is pragmatic: "If you want a degree at a low cost and can study on your own, it's okay. Don't expect a high-paying job from the campus."

Verdict: Is Eastern Academy of Science & Technology Worth It?

EAST is a very specific bargain. It's worth serious consideration for a financially constrained student who has a moderate OJEE/JEE Main rank, possesses strong self-discipline, and views the college primarily as an affordable platform to earn a BPUT degree. Your success will depend almost entirely on your own off-campus preparation for placements or competitive exams. The low fee removes financial pressure and allows you to invest in external courses or resources.

You should probably look elsewhere if you need a structured, supportive placement ecosystem, want a vibrant campus life with large peer batches, or are entering a core branch like Mechanical or Civil with hopes of strong on-campus recruitment. The college’s current challenges with management and student strength are real. Think of EAST not as a gateway, but as a tool. In the right, self-driven hands, it can work. But it won't do the work for you.
