IIM Ranchi admissions: MBA and IPM selection explained
IIM Ranchi runs separate admission processes for its full-time MBA programmes and five-year Integrated Programme in Management (IPM). The latest captured MBA criteria are for the 2026-28 batch and refer to CAT 2025 and JAP 2026; the IPM notice is for 2026-31 and names IPMAT 2026. These are dated rules, not a forecast for 2027-28. Check the official admissions page for the notice matching your intended programme and intake before applying.
MBA and MBA-specialisation admissions
For the 2026-28 MBA intake, IIM Ranchi published its criteria within the Joint Admission Process for participating IIMs. The institute’s notice identifies CAT 2025 as an input and describes a process involving shortlisting and a personal interview. The document includes indicative minimum cut-offs for initial screening. Those figures are not a guarantee of a shortlist, interview, or admission: the criteria and later steps must be read together, and an initial threshold should not be confused with the final merit calculation.
IIM Ranchi lists the general MBA, MBA-HRM and MBA-BA as distinct programmes. Read the exact document language for the programme you select. The MBA-BA criteria discuss accepted academic backgrounds and marks; whether a particular degree fits a stated category can depend on the notice’s definitions and the institute’s interpretation. If your qualification title or subject combination is not clearly covered, ask the admissions office before submitting rather than assuming that eligibility for one MBA route automatically transfers to another.
The notice describes CAT-based initial screening followed by a personal interview and later merit processing. It is not sound to translate an indicative minimum percentile into a predicted final score. Selection can use multiple components, and the document’s weightings and definitions apply only to its specified intake. Use the exact CAT year, category and programme stated in the live notice. Old coaching charts, student discussions and past-year tables do not establish the current official cutoff.
For an application, verify that the portal shows the same programme and cycle as the PDF. Confirm registration dates, documents, payment amount and any later communication from the Joint Admission Process or IIM Ranchi. Retain the dated criteria and payment receipt. Notices can be revised; the most recent official instruction for the same intake takes precedence over a cached copy. The sources captured for this update do not establish a 2027-28 MBA application opening date, closing date, CAT cutoff, interview shortlist or final selection formula.
IPM admissions
The five-year IPM has a separate route from the postgraduate MBA. IIM Ranchi’s 2026-31 criteria state that the initial shortlist was based on IPMAT 2026, conducted by IIM Indore, followed by a personal interview. The document describes a consolidated merit list using the specified test and interview components. Applicants for that batch should consult the full criteria for the score calculation, eligibility and schedule; the test name alone is not a complete description of selection.
These rules are specific to IPM 2026-31. They do not establish which test, weightings, interview process or application dates will apply to a later cohort. The institute’s admissions page provides the relevant programme link and notices. Before paying or accepting an offer, confirm the batch identifier, eligibility wording, documents, fee schedule and deadlines in the latest official material. Do not substitute CAT/JAP instructions for IPMAT requirements, or assume the IPM process is identical to another institute’s IPM.
Cut-offs, eligibility and interpreting selection data
A cutoff can describe an initial screening threshold, a category-specific requirement, a later shortlist or a final admission outcome. These are different stages. The IIM Ranchi 2026-28 MBA document labels its initial figures as indicative; applicants should not present them as a universal “safe percentile.” A person above an indicative threshold may still not be shortlisted, and a person’s eventual outcome depends on the complete process and the applicable rules. Likewise, a historic percentile from another admission year cannot be used to promise an interview in a new cycle.
The responsible source is the official criteria PDF for the exact programme and year, read with the corresponding CAT or IPMAT instructions and any JAP communication. Check category and academic eligibility text rather than applying general thresholds across categories. If the institute publishes a revised schedule, use that version. The captured evidence did not support a separate current cutoff series beyond the initial 2026-28 MBA criteria, so this page keeps cutoff guidance within admissions instead of presenting a table that could imply more certainty than the source provides.
Applicant checklist
- Select the programme first: MBA, MBA-HRM, MBA-BA and IPM do not share one interchangeable route.
- Match the criteria document to the intended batch. The cited MBA rules are 2026-28; the cited IPM rules are 2026-31.
- Confirm the entrance-test cycle: CAT 2025 is named for the captured MBA process; IPMAT 2026 is named for the captured IPM process.
- Read eligibility and category definitions in the full notice. Seek written clarification where your academic record does not clearly match a listed category.
- Treat an indicative cutoff as an initial filter only. It is not a prediction or assurance of admission.
- Check the live application portal and official notices for deadlines, documents, payment and any revised instructions. No 2027-28 dates or cutoffs are established by the sources reviewed here.
