IIM Ranchi scholarships: merit and means schemes
IIM Ranchi describes two institute scholarship schemes for students in its management programmes: a Merit Scholarship and a Merit-cum-Means (McM) Scholarship. They use different selection considerations and should not be treated as one guaranteed fee discount. The official notices captured for this refresh include programme coverage and broad award rules, but the available documents do not state a reliable universal parental-income threshold or an individual award amount for every McM recipient. Confirm the current notice and application process with the Admissions Office before relying on aid in a budget.
Merit Scholarship
The Merit Scholarship notice says the award covers 50% of annual tuition for students selected in a particular year. It describes 18 awards for Indian students each year across MBA, MBA-BA, MBA-HRM and the IPM BBA segment, allocating awards among programme years. The notice separates first-year selection from later-year selection: first-year awards use the highest CAT percentile among admitted students for the MBA programmes or the highest IPMAT score among admitted IPM students; later awards use the highest CGPA at the specified term point. The IPM notice also describes a third-year award point.
This is a competitive, rank-based award. Admission to a programme does not itself confer the scholarship, and the notice’s 50% refers to annual tuition for selected recipients, not half of every academic, hostel or living cost. Applicants should confirm which tuition components are covered, when the award is credited, the renewal or continuation conditions, and how ties or eligibility are handled. The published description does not provide an applicant with a fixed percentile or CGPA that guarantees selection; awards depend on comparative performance within the covered programme and year.
Merit-cum-Means Scholarship
The McM notice says 25 students across MBA, MBA-Business Analytics, MBA-Human Resources Management and IPM are to receive scholarships each year, with an approximate total annual scholarship value of ₹1 crore. This is an aggregate scheme description, not a promised ₹1 crore award to each student or a fixed amount for every recipient. It says applicants must be meritorious and financially weak, and that the criteria include a parental-income cap and exclude students who have availed other scholarships. It also says award criteria give weightage to differently abled students and those belonging to SC or ST categories.
The notice does not specify a reliable income cap in the captured text, nor a per-student award amount or complete scoring formula. Do not use the older article’s specific income threshold, CGPA condition or promise of a full or partial waiver unless a current dated official notice confirms it. Ask the Admissions Office for the current income limit, accepted proof, application window, other-aid restrictions, selection formula, award amount and whether any continuation condition applies. Students in covered programmes are invited to apply, but an application does not establish eligibility or selection.
External scholarships and education loans
IIM Ranchi encourages students to consider the National Scholarship Portal and suitable state-government scholarships in addition to institute schemes. These are separate applications with their own eligibility, deadlines and award rules; the institute’s reference does not guarantee that a student or programme qualifies. Check the relevant government notice and the institute’s rules on combining aid before applying.
The Admissions material also references the PM-Vidyalaxmi education-loan scheme. A loan is different from a scholarship: it creates repayment obligations, and the institute’s link is not approval or a guarantee of interest support. Confirm eligibility, lender terms and applicable government conditions directly with the responsible scheme or lender.
Plan without assuming an award
For budgeting, begin with the full programme-specific fee schedule and treat scholarships as uncertain until an award is confirmed in writing. Separate annual tuition from deposits, hostel and mess charges, and other expenses. The 50% Merit Scholarship applies to annual tuition for selected recipients; the McM notice gives an approximate scheme-wide amount, not a standard individual reduction. Avoid subtracting either figure from your expected cost before checking the conditions and timing.
Keep the exact notice version, programme and academic year with your application. Ask whether the scheme applies to the MBA, MBA-BA, MBA-HRM or IPM batch you plan to join, which term’s results are used for later-year awards, and when payment or credit is made. If you receive more than one form of support, disclose it and confirm compatibility instead of assuming the awards can be combined. Ask whether a scholarship is paid directly against an instalment or reimbursed later, whether a recipient must maintain a specified academic standing, and what happens if programme status changes. These details affect cash flow even when the nominal award share is clear. The notices captured here do not answer every operational question, so get the answer for your cohort from the office before treating a projected award as available funds.
