IIM Shillong scholarships: separate institute aid from government schemes
IIM Shillong lists need-based financial assistance for participants in its two-year Post Graduate Programme (PGP), along with government scholarship routes. These sources describe different forms of support with different decision-makers. The institute’s Need Based Financial Assistance (NBFA) scheme is assessed using a participant’s annual gross family income, liquidity, need and overall suitability. Government awards follow their own eligibility rules and application windows. Neither an application nor admission alone guarantees an award.
The institute does not publish a universal NBFA amount or income cutoff on the pages reviewed. Confirm the current year’s process and documents with the PGP office before budgeting. Do not treat a historical award, a scheme name on the finance page, or another student’s result as a personal entitlement.
Need Based Financial Assistance for PGP
IIM Shillong says the NBFA scheme is intended to help economically weaker PGP participants. Its FAQ and 2024-25 Annual Report state that award numbers and assistance amounts depend on annual gross family income, participant liquidity, need and overall suitability. The institute’s report says participants from the 2023-25 and 2024-26 cohorts received support during 2024-25; these are historical outcomes, not a promise of the next award cycle. The report’s prose gives counts of seven and six respectively, while the appended beneficiary table appears to contain a different number for the 2024-26 batch. Because the source presentation does not reconcile that count, this guide does not use it as a current award benchmark.
The published sources reviewed do not state an amount, an assured percentage of tuition, or an income threshold for NBFA. Ask the PGP office for the application form, assessment period, documentary requirements and whether support is renewed each term or year. Keep a record of family income and available assets or liabilities only as requested by the official application. Do not send sensitive financial documents to unofficial agents.
Government scholarships and external eligibility
IIM Shillong’s finance page links the Top Class Scholarship for SC students and directs SC, ST and PwD participants to Government of India scholarship routes. The PGP FAQ says government scholarships are available for SC and ST participants and describes coverage of tuition and other non-refundable charges. The actual award depends on the named government scheme, the student meeting its current eligibility criteria, and the application being accepted by the responsible authority. Check the National Scholarship Portal and the relevant ministry’s live guidelines for the current year rather than assuming that every applicant in a category receives a full-fee award.
The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment guideline linked by the institute describes financial assistance under a specific scheme, including different terms by institute sector and listed support components. Its rules and ceilings should be read as that scheme’s policy, not as an IIM Shillong promise or the terms of NBFA. Government notices can change eligibility, income limits, eligible courses and application dates. The 2024-25 Annual Report also records that two ST candidates received scholarships in that year; that historical count does not predict future selections.
Other awards and education loans
The 2024-25 Annual Report lists a small number of participants from past PGP batches as recipients of external awards, including Maharashtra’s Deshantargat scheme and Aditya Birla Scholarships. These examples show that additional awards may exist, but they do not establish that the same award is open to every IIM Shillong student. Check each sponsor’s own eligibility, selection and renewal rules. The institute’s finance page names scholarship routes; it does not publish a single combined aid package for every course or batch.
An education loan is borrowing, not a scholarship. The PGP FAQ says participants have used bank education loans and notes that loan sanction and terms follow bank procedures. Compare interest, moratorium, fees, insurance, collateral conditions and repayment dates with the lender before accepting an offer. Do not reduce the published fee amount by possible assistance until the award is formally confirmed.
A practical aid checklist
- Match the scheme to your programme and intake; the reviewed NBFA description is for PGP participants and should not be assumed to cover PGPEx, PGP-WE, IPM or doctoral students.
- Check the live institute and government notice for the application window, income rules, category documents and eligible fee components.
- Ask the PGP office whether the institute requires an internal NBFA application in addition to a government portal submission.
- Save the official notice and confirmation receipt, and follow up through the listed institute or ministry contact if an application status is unclear.
- Budget against the gross fee until an award letter identifies the amount, duration and conditions.
- Review renewal rules and payment timing. A scholarship may be disbursed after a fee deadline or depend on continued eligibility.
The official pages reviewed identify assistance routes, but do not establish a current 2027-29 award amount, NBFA income cutoff or guaranteed coverage. Confirm those details with IIM Shillong and the scheme administrator for your exact programme and intake.
