Applicants looking at IIT Guwahati for the 2027 intake should separate institute scholarships from one-time assistance, refundable loans, research assistantships and tuition-fee concessions. Each route addresses a different cost or circumstance. The Institute’s current financial-assistance summary lists merit and merit-cum-means awards for specified undergraduate and postgraduate groups, category-linked support, funds for particular needs, and assistantships for most admitted MTech and PhD students. It does not publish a 2027-28 award amount or application calendar. Treat the list as a shortlist, then confirm the current rule and notice before building it into your budget.
Which scholarship route fits your profile?
The Institute Merit Scholarship (IMS) is aimed at year-wise stream toppers among BTech, BDes, MSc and MA students. IIT Guwahati says it is awarded from the second year onward. It is therefore a performance-based route for continuing students, not an amount every new entrant should subtract from first-year costs. Check how the current notice defines the stream, academic record and award period; the public summary does not spell out those details.
The Institute Merit-cum-Means (McM) scholarship is listed for BTech, BDes, MSc and MA students and combines merit with financial need. The Institute says awards go to up to 25% of non-SC/ST students. That is a ceiling on coverage, not a promise that every eligible applicant receives an award. Students in SC/ST categories should examine the separately named SC-ST scholarship, which also has a specified income condition. The summary does not give the current income threshold or award value, so use the live application notice and applicable government certificate rules rather than older online figures.
Assistance for a specific expense or hardship
Some options are not general tuition scholarships. The Student Travel Assistance Fund (STAF) supports meritorious students attending or presenting at conferences, workshops, symposia and scientific meetings. It may matter when a student has an accepted academic contribution but needs help with travel. The Student Contingency Fund (SCF) addresses unexpected difficulties during study, with the Institute naming serious accident, illness and a calamity in the family as examples. The Student Childcare Assistance Fund (SCAF) is for married student parents who find it difficult to finance their child’s education.
The Students’ Brotherhood Fund (SBF) is a different kind of support: IIT Guwahati describes it as an interest-free “Loan of Honour” that must be repaid, for deserving students’ education or medical expenses. Do not count it as a grant. A Special Scholarship may be awarded at the Director’s discretion to at most five students in a year on genuine means grounds; the Institute also says it may make fewer awards, including none. External government or non-government scholarships can be used only where Institute rules permit. These routes depend on the relevant scheme’s conditions and approval, so check the current notice for the application route and supporting documents.
MTech and PhD students: check assistantship separately
IIT Guwahati says assistantships are provided to most students admitted to MTech and PhD programmes. This is useful when estimating postgraduate affordability, but “most” is not an individual guarantee and the public financial-assistance summary does not state a 2027-28 amount, duration or duties. Confirm the assistantship category attached to your exact programme and admission offer. Research applicants should also check the programme’s current studentship category and any restrictions on combining institute support with an external fellowship before accepting another award.
How to apply and what to verify before accepting
The practical first step is to identify whether your case is an academic award, a means-tested scholarship, a hardship or travel fund, a repayable loan, or a programme assistantship. Then open IIT Guwahati’s Financial Assistance page and follow the current scheme-specific notice or form. Ask the Students’ Affairs Section about student scholarships and welfare funds; for MTech or PhD assistantship terms, use the exact programme’s admission and studentship instructions. Keep the relevant income, category, academic or expense documents ready, but rely on the notice for its required formats and submission channel.
Check the current notice to see whether a scholarship is automatic or requires an application. IIT Guwahati’s Academic Ordinances page explicitly warns that several clauses are amended, the documents are being updated, and the available versions are for reference; it directs students to contact the Academic Section for clarification. The Board of Governors’ 2024 minutes also record proposed changes to IMS, McM and SC-ST rules. Old thresholds, school-fee conditions, award dates and selection calculations may therefore not be safe to carry into a 2027 application.
For a separate cost check, the July 2026 freshers page described MEB/OEB tuition-fee waiver documentation for eligible new students, including an income certificate and affidavit, with an 18 August 2026 deadline for later submission in that intake. That was a 2026 onboarding instruction, not a 2027 deadline. Treat fee waiver as a distinct admission-fee process, not as proof that a scholarship has been granted. When the 2027 fresher page is released, check its income period, forms and deadline before paying or assuming a waiver.
For your budget, use the amount in the current offer or sanction letter only after approval. Until then, record a possible scholarship as conditional and keep a no-award budget. The next useful action is to save the scheme that matches your case, then verify its current eligibility, documents, deadline, amount, renewal rule and whether it can be combined with other funding through the relevant IIT Guwahati notice or office.
