IIT Kanpur’s 2027-28 admission page needs to answer two different questions: which entrance route leads to the programme, and what a candidate must do after qualifying. For undergraduate applicants, the established route is JEE (Advanced), followed by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) process. The institute’s programme directory lists four-year B.Tech degrees in Aerospace Engineering, Biological Sciences and Bio-Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. It also lists four-year B.S. degrees in Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Economics, Mathematics and Scientific Computing, Physics, and Statistics and Data Science. These are different degree pathways, so compare the programme title and curriculum before filling preferences rather than treating every IIT Kanpur option as a B.Tech seat.
IIT Kanpur also runs postgraduate and doctoral routes that do not use the undergraduate JoSAA choice process. The institute’s admissions page identifies JAM for two-year M.Sc. and M.Sc.-Ph.D. routes, CAT for the MBA, CEED for M.Des., and GATE for the regular M.Tech. route. Ph.D. admissions can use different qualifying examinations and interviews by discipline. Department notices control each application’s exact eligibility, dates, documents and selection method. A candidate considering one of these programmes should start from the relevant department or programme notice rather than apply the undergraduate steps below to every degree.
As checked on 27 October 2026, official IIT Kanpur pages describe the undergraduate programme list and point to JEE (Advanced), while the available national examination and counselling material is for 2026. The JEE (Advanced) 2026 eligibility page, for example, required candidates to satisfy five criteria, including qualification through JEE (Main) 2026, a specified Class XII appearance window, and rules on attempts and earlier IIT admission. Those exact year-specific conditions are not a 2027 rule. The official JEE (Advanced) 2027 brochure, eligibility criteria, registration dates and examination calendar must be checked when published; do not use a previous year’s age, attempt, board-year or shortlist rule as a substitute.
For planning, the route is still useful: prepare for the qualifying national examination, follow the current JEE (Advanced) notice for registration and eligibility, sit the examination if eligible, and then complete JoSAA registration and choice filling if you receive a valid rank. The JEE (Advanced) admission-criteria page describes Class XII subject and performance conditions for its 2026 process, including Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and either a prescribed aggregate or the applicable board top-20-percentile route. Because the criteria are tied to that examination cycle, 2027 applicants should recheck the official criteria and any board-specific percentile list instead of assuming a 2026 threshold will carry forward.
JoSAA is the common online allocation process for the participating institutes covered by its business rules. For IIT Kanpur applicants, selection is not a direct walk-in application to a department after JEE (Advanced). A candidate registers in JoSAA, checks the participating-institute and programme list for that cycle, places programme and institute choices in preference order, and follows the seat-allocation and acceptance instructions in the current business rules. A seat offer depends on the candidate’s eligible rank, the choices submitted, the seat matrix, category and pool rules, and the allocation round. A qualifying rank alone does not guarantee a particular branch.
Use the official opening-and-closing-rank tool as a planning aid, not a promise. The 2026 JoSAA interface asks the user to select the round, institute type, institute, academic programme and seat type or category. It also states that open-seat ranks are CRL, while EWS, OBC-NCL, SC and ST ranks are the respective category ranks; PwD ranks are within the corresponding category. A comparison is meaningful only when the year, round, programme, category, quota and gender pool match. Cutoffs move as seats and preferences interact, so do not compare a final-round category rank with an opening rank or mix category ranks with CRL.
Once a seat is offered, read the live instructions for online reporting, document upload, fee payment, verification and any required physical reporting. Keep the JEE and JoSAA login details, board marksheets, identity records and category or disability certificates ready in the format the current authority specifies. Names and dates of birth should match across records. If a correction or certificate issue arises, use the official helpdesk before the deadline; a counselling deadline is not extended merely because a document was prepared late.
The B.Tech. list spans eight engineering disciplines, while the B.S. list covers six science, mathematics, economics and data-focused disciplines. The choice should reflect the actual programme and its course structure, not only a perceived branch hierarchy. Applicants should open the current undergraduate manual and department curriculum to understand first-year requirements, later specialisation, laboratory or project work, and any programme-specific rules. The public programme pages establish degree labels and routes, but they do not replace the academic regulations for the student’s entering batch.
IIT Kanpur lists several five-year dual-degree options for students already registered in B.Tech. or B.S. programmes, including B.Tech.-M.Tech., B.S.-M.S., B.S.-M.Tech., B.Tech.-M.S., B.Tech.-M.Des. and B.Tech.-MBA combinations. Treat these as internal academic options described by the institute, not as additional 2027 first-year JoSAA seats or guaranteed transfers. Eligibility, timing, capacity and approval depend on the institute’s regulations. A student should first choose among the programmes actually open in JoSAA for the admission year.
Before the 2027 examination cycle opens, identify whether the target is a B.Tech. or B.S. programme and review the department curriculum. When the 2027 JEE (Advanced) brochure appears, verify all eligibility criteria together, including the JEE (Main) qualification route, Class XII rules, attempt limits and prior-IIT-admission conditions. Do not rely on a single criterion or on an older IIT Kanpur admissions page where a date or age rule may no longer match the national brochure.
After the result, use JoSAA’s 2027 institute list, seat matrix, business rules, schedule and opening-and-closing-rank filters. Prepare a preference list based on programmes you would genuinely accept, in the order you prefer them. Review the category, quota and gender pool that applies to you, and keep copies of every submitted choice and acknowledgement. Follow the allotment portal for the next action after each round. The application and seat-acceptance deadlines are cycle-bound, so the official JEE (Advanced) and JoSAA sites are the controlling sources for dates and procedural changes.
At the time of writing, 2027-28 dates, admission criteria, programme seat matrix and branch-specific cutoffs had not been confirmed in the official 2026 material reviewed for this page. This guide therefore explains the verified route and where to check, without inventing a calendar or projecting 2026 ranks into the next cycle.
