Saastra College of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (SCPER) in Nellore is a study in practical expectations. Established in 2007, it’s a private, PCI-approved institution that has carved out a niche as a reliable, no-frills launchpad for pharmacy careers in Andhra Pradesh. Don’t confuse it with the similarly named SASTRA University in Tamil Nadu—this is a different, more localized proposition. Its story isn't one of national rankings or glamorous packages, but of providing accessible, regulated pharmacy education to students in the region, often at a cost that makes sense when government scholarships are factored in. The campus is rural, the rules are strict, and the career outcomes are firmly rooted in the local pharmaceutical hub. For a certain student, that’s exactly what they need.
The academic lineup is standard for a PCI-approved college, covering the core pharmacy spectrum. All programs follow the JNTUA R23/R19 Regulations, which means the syllabus is synchronized with what's taught across the university's affiliated colleges. The B.Pharm program has the largest intake at 100 students per year. Where SCPER tries to add value is in its postgraduate specializations—M.Pharm in Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Analysis, and Pharmacology. These are high-demand niches in the pharma industry, focusing on formulation development and quality control. The Pharm.D program, a six-year commitment, includes a mandatory one-year hospital internship, typically at the Government General Hospital in Nellore.
Faculty strength hovers around 36-45 members. You’ll find a mix: about 15-20% of senior staff hold PhDs, led by Principal Dr. G.H. Srinivasa Rao, while the majority are M.Pharm qualified. Student reviews consistently highlight faculty accessibility as a major plus, which isn't always a given. The college facilitates industrial visits to units in the Nellore region and the larger Jawahar Lal Nehru Pharma City in Vizag, a crucial link to the local job market.
This is where managing expectations is critical. The placement narrative here is distinctly regional and modest. Let's separate the claims from the consensus.
The college officially cites an 80-90% placement rate. Talking to alumni and scanning reviews on platforms like CollegeDunia and Shiksha paints a more nuanced picture: the working number for on-campus, core-pharmacy offers seems closer to 60-70%. The packages are low by national engineering college standards, but they're realistic for entry-level roles in this sector and region.
Top recruiters are a who's who of Andhra Pradesh's pharmaceutical landscape: Hetero Drugs, Aurobindo Pharma, Divi’s Laboratories, Sun Pharma. You’ll also see healthcare IT and services firms like Apollo Hospitals, Episource, Advantmed, and Aquity Solutions for medical coding roles. Occasional off-campus opportunities with Dr. Reddy’s or TCS's life sciences wing pop up. The roles are what you'd expect: Production, Quality Assurance (QA), Quality Control (QC), and Pharmacovigilance.
One alumnus put it bluntly: "If you want a job in medical coding or local pharma, this college is fine. Don't expect big MNCs like Pfizer to come for campus drives." That's the reality check. The placement cell is active, bringing in 30-40 companies annually, but the ceiling is visible.
For a private institution, SCPER's fee structure is relatively moderate, especially under the convener quota regulated by the Andhra Pradesh Admission and Fee Regulatory Committee (AFRC).
A rough total for a 4-year B.Pharm degree, including hostel, lands around ₹3.5 lakhs. That's a decent number. It becomes very accessible for eligible students through the Andhra Pradesh government's Jagananna Vidya Deevena (JVD) and Vasathi Deevena scholarship schemes for SC/ST/BC/EBC categories, which can cover most of the tuition and hostel costs.
Admissions run through the standard Andhra Pradesh state counseling channels. It's all about entrance exam ranks.
The seat breakdown follows the 70:30 rule: 70% of seats are filled through the convener quota (state counseling), and 30% are management quota (direct admission, often at a higher fee). The application window typically aligns with the AP EAPCET calendar, from March to May.
Life at SCPER is disciplined and somewhat isolated. The campus spans about 8.5 acres in a rural setting near Varigonda village. The location is the most common gripe—there's little to do immediately outside the gates. The college compensates with on-campus necessities and strict security, particularly praised for maintaining a ragging-free environment.
Infrastructure is a point of pride. There are over 18 specialized labs for pharmaceutics, pharmacology, and analysis, equipped with functional HPLC and tablet compression machines. Students note they actually get hands-on time with the equipment. The library has a decent collection of 15,000+ volumes and DELNET membership for e-resources. Wi-Fi exists but is described as average in hostels.
Hostels are separate for boys and girls, with non-AC rooms typically shared by 3-4. The food is Andhra-style—vegetarian and non-vegetarian on specific days, often cited as spicy. The college runs a transport fleet of 3-5 buses connecting to Nellore city (15-18 km away) for a monthly charge of ₹300-500.
The management is described as traditional and strict, with a firm 75% attendance mandate. It’s not a "vibrant" campus in the metropolitan sense, but it provides a secure, focused environment.
Synthesizing feedback from CollegeDunia, Shiksha, and forums reveals a clear, consistent profile.
The Positives:
The Negatives:
The overall sentiment? It’s viewed as a solid, middle-tier college that does its core job without pretension.
SCPER isn't for everyone. It's not a nationally branded university, and it won't open doors to top-tier corporate placements. But that's not its purpose.
This college is a pragmatic choice for students from the Nellore and surrounding districts who have AP EAPCET ranks in the 35,000-45,000 range, especially those eligible for state scholarships. If your goal is to obtain a PCI-approved degree at a manageable cost, gain exposure to the robust local pharmaceutical industry in Andhra, and secure a stable, if modestly paying, entry-level job in production, QA, or medical coding, SCPER is a competent option. The faculty support and disciplined environment are genuine assets.
However, if you have ambitions for high-paying roles in multinational pharma R&D, a more urban campus life, or a degree from a highly ranked institution, you should probably look at larger state universities or national institutes. Saastra College is a workhorse, not a showhorse. For the right student, that’s exactly enough. You can find the latest official information on their website at Saastra College.
No, they are entirely different institutions. SASTRA University is a Deemed University located in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. Saastra College of Pharmaceutical Education and Research is a private college in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh, which is affiliated with JNTUA (Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Anantapur).
Yes, Saastra College provides a secure on-campus girls' hostel facility. The hostel has 24/7 warden supervision to ensure the safety and well-being of its residents.
For admission to the B.Pharm program under the General category convener quota, securing a rank under 40,000 in the AP EAPCET (Andhra Pradesh Engineering, Agriculture and Pharmacy Common Entrance Test) is usually considered safe.
Yes, the college provides integrated guidance and preparation for the GPAT (Graduate Pharmacy Aptitude Test) and NIPER exams. This support includes mock tests and is conducted by the college faculty.
While no college can guarantee placements, Saastra College has a dedicated placement cell that facilitates recruitment. The cell typically brings in 30 to 40 local pharmaceutical companies for campus placements annually.
