Zulfequar Haider Unani Medical College and Hospital (ZHUMCH) in Siwan is a name you'll hear if you're looking at Unani medicine in Bihar. Established back in 1979, it's one of the older private colleges for the BUMS degree in the region. But its recent history is more complicated than its age suggests. The college operates with a conditional yearly permission from the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM), a crucial detail for any prospective student. For the 2025-26 session, that permission came with a reduced intake of 45 seats. It's a college that serves a specific, local need, training practitioners for government AYUSH posts and private clinics in North Bihar. If your NEET rank is in the higher ranges and you're committed to this path, ZHUMCH represents a functional, if no-frills, option.

Courses and Academic Programs at Zulfequar Haider Unani Medical College

The only program on offer is the Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery (BUMS), a 5.5-year course that includes a one-year mandatory internship. The intake is small—just 45 seats as of the 2025-26 session, down from 50. That reduction itself tells a story about regulatory scrutiny. Academically, the college follows the traditional NCISM and BRABU curriculum across 12 theoretical departments, with seven core clinical departments reported as fully operational. These include Kulliyat (Basic Principles), Tashreehul Badan (Anatomy), and Ilmul Advia (Pharmacology).

The faculty, around 33 members strong, includes professors like Mr. Nuruzza Man and Mr. Alam Mokhtar in Kulliyat. Student reviews often describe them as approachable and steeped in traditional teaching methods. The academic calendar is standard, with annual exams. It's a straightforward, traditional Unani education. Don't expect interdisciplinary electives or a modern, tech-driven pedagogy here. The focus is on the core texts and principles of the system.

Zulfequar Haider Unani Medical College Placements: Career Paths & Reality Check

Let's be clear: you don't talk about "placement packages" at a Unani college like you would at an engineering school. The career trajectory is different. The most common path for ZHUMCH graduates is to either set up their own private Unani clinic or to compete for Medical Officer (MO) positions within the Bihar government's AYUSH department. An unverified student claim floating around puts an average starting salary for such roles at around INR 3 lakh per annum, but that's highly variable.

The real "placement" is the compulsory one-year rotatory internship at the college's own attached hospital. This is where you get your hands-on clinical training. However, student sentiment on stipends for this period is consistently lukewarm to negative. Payments are supposed to follow state government norms for private AYUSH colleges, but they're often reported as low or irregular. Some graduates also find roles in wellness centers or with pharmaceutical companies specializing in Unani medicine. The college's own track record, as noted in the brief, shows a significant number of alumni working as AYUSH Medical Officers in Bihar. That's a decent, stable outcome for a state-run career path.

Fees and Financial Aid at Zulfequar Haider Unani Medical College

The total fee for the entire 5.5-year BUMS program is estimated to be between INR 7,16,000 and INR 7,17,000. That breaks down to an annual tuition fee in the ballpark of INR 1.2 to 1.5 lakhs, though some portals note a higher first-year fee that might include development charges. On top of that, you need to budget for hostel and mess fees, which aren't explicitly detailed by the college but are estimated at INR 50,000 to 70,000 per year for this region.

So, you're looking at a total cost of attendance likely exceeding INR 10 lakhs when you factor in living expenses. The primary financial aid available is the Bihar Post-Matric Scholarship (PMS Bihar) for SC/ST/OBC students. You'll need to apply through the state's online portal. There's no mention of extensive merit-based scholarships from the college's own funds, which is pretty typical for private institutions of this profile.

Admissions: Eligibility, Cutoffs & Selection Process

Admission is 100% based on your NEET-UG score. You must have qualified NEET and then participate in the state counseling conducted by the Bihar Combined Entrance Competitive Examination Board (BCECEB) under their UGMAC (Under Graduate Medical Admission Counselling) scheme.

The cutoffs here are not for the faint of heart. In the 2025 admission cycle, the closing rank for the General category seat in Round 2 was 1,281,581. To put it plainly, you need a rank in the 12-13 lakh range to have a serious shot. That makes it an option for students with lower NEET scores who are determined to enter the medical field through the AYUSH stream. The process is standard: clear NEET, register for Bihar UGMAC counseling when it opens (usually June-July), and choose this college based on your rank availability.

Campus, Hostels and Student Life

The campus spans 5 acres and is located just 1.5 km from Siwan Junction railway station, which is a practical advantage. Infrastructure is a mixed bag, and student reviews are the first to point it out. The building is old and could use renovation. Labs for Physiology, Pathology, and Pharmacy are equipped but aren't described as cutting-edge. Essential facilities like a dissection hall, anatomy museum, and a herbal garden for medicinal plants are present and functional.

The attached teaching hospital has an estimated 60-100 beds and handles a moderate flow of OPD and IPD patients from the surrounding area. Students sometimes wish for a wider variety of clinical cases, which are more abundant in larger government hospitals in cities like Patna. Separate hostels for boys and girls are available on campus, along with a canteen, sports ground, and basic Wi-Fi. It covers the necessities without any luxury.

Social life is minimal. This isn't a bustling university campus with fests and a vibrant club culture. The atmosphere is described as strictly academic. If you're looking for a typical college experience full of extracurriculars, you'll be disappointed. The focus here is on getting through a demanding professional course.

Student Reviews: What Zulfequar Haider Unani Medical College Alumni Really Think

Scouring platforms like CollegeDunia and Shiksha reveals a consistent, median consensus. The teaching faculty gets decent marks for being knowledgeable and accessible. The 75% attendance rule is enforced. That's the positive.

The negatives are equally consistent. The aging infrastructure and need for lab upgrades come up repeatedly. Administrative processes are termed "traditional," which is often a euphemism for slow and bureaucratic. The most critical piece of feedback, however, revolves around the college's regulatory status. Students are aware and advise caution regarding the NCISM's "conditional yearly permission." The college was listed as "not eligible for rating" in 2024-25 and had a "denial of permission" in 2022-23. While it has permission for 2025-26, this history creates an undercurrent of uncertainty that prospective students must weigh. It's a stark reminder to always verify the current year's recognition status directly on the NCISM website.

Verdict: Is Zulfequar Haider Unani Medical College Worth It?

ZHUMCH is a highly specific choice. It's worth considering if you have a NEET rank in the 12-13 lakh range and are genuinely passionate about building a career in Unani medicine, particularly within Bihar. Its strengths are its location, functional (if dated) facilities, and a faculty that students find approachable. The path to becoming a government AYUSH Medical Officer is a clear, stable outcome for many graduates.

But you should probably look elsewhere if modern infrastructure, a vibrant campus life, or absolute regulatory certainty are priorities. The college's history with NCISM permissions, while currently resolved, is a red flag that requires due diligence. Ultimately, it serves a niche: providing an affordable (by private college standards) Unani education to students from the region who might not have other options. It's a practical stepping stone into the field, not a destination for those seeking a premier or expansive educational experience. Do your homework, check the latest NCISM status, and talk to current students before committing.
