The Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery (BUMS), whose degree nomenclature in the national undergraduate regulation is Kamile Tib o Jarahat, is a regulated undergraduate programme in Unani medicine. It combines classroom study of Unani principles and texts with contemporary biomedical subjects, practical learning, supervised clinical exposure and a compulsory rotating internship. The name is sometimes presented as Kamil-E-Tibb-O-Jarahat. It refers to this degree, not to a single college, a fee level or an automatic licence to practise. The National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) prescribes the educational framework; a college’s current permission, intake, affiliation, fee schedule and counselling route must be checked separately. (NCISM Minimum Standards of Undergraduate Unani Education Regulations, 2022)
For the main BUMS course, the regulation describes five years and six months: three professional phases of eighteen months each, followed by twelve months of compulsory rotatory internship. This is a total elapsed programme duration that includes internship. Do not read it as five and a half years of classroom-only study. The regulation also contains a distinct one-year Pre-Tib route for a limited set of listed Oriental qualifications. That route has separate entry conditions and should not be confused with the direct 10+2 BUMS route or silently added to every student’s course length. (NCISM regulation, Regulations 4-6)
BUMS is both a language-aware and clinically oriented course. The first professional phase establishes foundations: Urdu, Arabic, logic and philosophy; Kulliyat Umoore Tabiya, the basic principles of Unani medicine; human anatomy; physiology; and history of medicine. Students also complete prescribed electives. NCISM’s 2022 regulation specifies an induction period of at least fifteen working days and ninety hours, introducing the system, its terminology and the programme. This early orientation matters because a student may enter with strong school-level science but little exposure to Unani vocabulary or texts. Language readiness is part of the academic transition, not a substitute for the biological sciences required for entry. (NCISM regulation, Regulation 8; NCISM first-professional BUMS curriculum directory)
The second professional phase expands the connection between concepts and clinical settings. The prescribed subjects include Ilmul Advia (pharmacology), Ilmul Saidla wa Murakkabat (Unani pharmacy and compound drugs), Tahaffuzi wa Samaji Tib (preventive and social medicine), Mahiyatul Amraz (pathology), medical jurisprudence and toxicology, and clinical principles. The third phase includes Moalajat (medicine), obstetrics and gynaecology, surgery, eye/ear/nose/throat and dental conditions, dermatology and cosmetology, regimenal therapy, paediatrics and neonatology, and research methodology and medical statistics. These are regulated areas of study; they do not mean every institution offers a separately selectable specialization within the BUMS degree. (NCISM regulation, Tables 3-5; NCISM second-professional curriculum; NCISM third-professional curriculum)
Students encounter theory, practicals, demonstrations and clinical training. The regulation says clinical training begins in the first professional session in the attached hospital and continues according to subject requirements. The internship follows the professional examinations and is compulsory for degree completion. Actual rotations, attendance monitoring, examination calendars, hospital workload and day-to-day teaching arrangements should be checked in the chosen college’s current prospectus and university notices. The existence of a regulatory requirement is not evidence that a particular college has current permission or that its clinical site meets every student’s expectations.
BUMS admissions for the 2026 examination cycle were tied to NEET (UG)-2026. For the main route, the NCISM rule requires a recognised 10+2 or equivalent qualification with Physics, Chemistry and Biology and sets minimum combined PCB marks by category. It also requires Urdu, Arabic or Persian as a language subject in Class 10 or 12; candidates who do not meet that language condition must follow the specified Urdu, Arabic and logic/philosophy study during the first professional session. The 2026 NTA bulletin also describes the BUMS language condition and says admission to the undergraduate ASU&H degrees uses NEET for that cycle. Eligibility is cumulative: a qualifying examination, the entrance result and language route all matter. Check the exact current bulletin and counselling notice before applying. (NCISM regulation, Regulation 4; NEET (UG)-2026 Information Bulletin, Chapter 9)
For the main BUMS degree, the regulation also sets an age condition of at least seventeen years by 31 December of the admission year. The entrance qualifying percentile and the 10+2 subject/mark requirements are different tests: qualifying NEET does not itself establish that the qualifying-exam and language conditions are met, and satisfying school criteria does not guarantee a seat. Category-specific thresholds and disability provisions must be read as written in the regulation and the current entrance/counselling material, rather than reduced to a single “minimum marks” number.
The regulation separately recognises a one-year Pre-Tib programme for candidates holding specific Oriental qualifications equivalent to intermediate, subject to the listed institutions and rules. It is not a general alternative for anyone without PCB, Urdu or a NEET result. Its availability, applicable seat limit and admission process must be confirmed from the current regulator and the institution. This distinction is especially important when a college page uses “Pre-Tib” or “Kamil-E-Tibb-O-Jarahat” terminology without explaining the entry route.
A single exam result does not tell you which portal to use. For the 2026-27 session, AACCC’s current page described counselling for specified All India Quota seats of BUMS and related ASU&H programmes at Government and Government-aided institutions, Deemed Universities, Central Universities and National Institutes. The 2026 NTA bulletin assigns state/UT authorities to state quota seats and distinguishes central counselling from the private ASU&H AIQ authority. Before choice filling, identify the exact institution, quota and counselling body shown in the current seat matrix. A seat appearing in an older list or a previous-year cutoff is not proof of a current seat or a current permission to admit. (AACCC UG Counseling; NEET (UG)-2026 Information Bulletin)
As a dated 2026-27 reference, AACCC's revised schedule published on 26 October 2026 listed additional stray-vacancy round dates. That schedule belongs only to the 2026-27 cycle and may be superseded by a later notice; it is not a live-date statement for another year. The notice also specified SVR-II without new registration or choice filling, reusing choices submitted in SVR-I; it listed the result for 24 November, reporting from 25-30 November, and joined-candidate data verification on 1-2 December. The notice left the final admission date to NCISM/NCH notification. Applicants should use the live AACCC page, current information bulletin, seat matrix and reporting instructions, not a copied date table. Registration charges and refundable security deposits are counselling payments; they are not college tuition. Refund or forfeiture conditions belong to the applicable year’s bulletin and FAQ. The linked 2026-27 AACCC bulletin was listed on the official website, but its PDF was not readable in this research run, so no specific fee amount or additional clause is asserted here. (AACCC revised 2026-27 schedule; AACCC UG information-bulletin index)
There is no responsibly supportable national BUMS tuition figure in this guide. Fees vary by institution, ownership, quota, state rules and academic year. A prospectus may list tuition separately from admission charges, university or examination fees, deposits, hostel, mess and other costs. Ask the institution for a current written schedule tied to the exact BUMS intake and seat type. Confirm whether amounts are annual, semester-based or whole-course totals, whether they can change under an order, and which deposits are refundable. Do not divide one total by five and a half to infer an annual fee unless the source explicitly states the covered period and components.
Compare offers on a like-for-like basis. A government-seat fee cannot be used to estimate a management or deemed-university seat. A hostel estimate from a student forum is not an official tuition quote. A refundable counselling deposit is not a college fee. The course row’s legacy fee aggregates are calculated across colleges and do not establish what any one BUMS applicant will pay; they are not presented as BUMS tuition here. The college-specific admission notice and current prospectus are the right documents for a decision.
Finishing coursework is not the same as finishing the degree. NCISM requires completion of examinations and the prescribed twelve-month compulsory rotatory internship before the BUMS award. The internship is a supervised training stage attached to specified professional postings; students should verify the current internship schedule, attendance, assessment, completion paperwork and stipend policy directly with their institution and university. No course-level source can promise a particular stipend or the quality of an individual hospital placement.
Graduation is also distinct from registration as a practitioner. NCISM’s ethics and registration regulations define a practitioner in terms of being registered under a State Register and/or the National Register. The degree alone should not be described as automatic unrestricted authority to practise. Graduates should check recognition of their qualification, internship completion and the current registration requirements with the competent council and NCISM. This guide is about education pathways, not clinical advice or a description of permitted treatment. (NCISM Ethics and Registration Regulations, 2023)
Start with current NCISM permission and the exact intake for the academic year. Then verify the affiliating university, seat category, counselling authority, annual calendar, curriculum implementation, attached hospital, clinical postings, internship arrangements, language support, library and laboratory facilities, student accommodation and written fee schedule. Check how the college supports entrants who need the first-professional Urdu and Unani terminology transition. These checks answer more than a generic ranking: they connect the applicant’s eligibility and budget to the actual programme being offered.
Use the official NCISM curriculum directories to review the professional-year subject documents, and ask the college which curriculum version applies to the intended joining batch. The directories link first-, second- and third-professional materials, but a link alone does not show that a college implements every topic or has a specific postgraduate specialization. Ask for the institution’s academic calendar and clinical-training plan. Confirm the current BUMS participation and seat status in the appropriate counselling list rather than relying on an old brochure. (NCISM first-professional curriculum; NCISM second-professional curriculum; NCISM third-professional curriculum; AACCC participating institutes)
BUMS may suit a student interested in the Unani system, willing to study its classical terminology alongside contemporary sciences, and prepared for extended practical and supervised clinical training. It is a poor fit for someone seeking a short credential, a guaranteed public-sector post, a published national salary range or a universal college fee. Admission is competitive and rules can depend on the candidate’s category, seat type, state and current cycle. Build a shortlist only after confirming language eligibility, NEET and counselling conditions, institution permission, full programme cost and the support available for professional study.
Treat all variable admission details as a fresh-check task. The 2026 exam and 2026-27 counselling evidence in this guide are dated examples of the official routes, not forecasts for the next cohort. For a later cycle, revisit NEET-NTA, NCISM, AACCC, the relevant state authority and the selected institution before taking action.
Build the decision in stages. First, compare the candidate’s school subjects, marks, language record and date of birth with NCISM’s BUMS rule. Second, check the correct NEET bulletin for the year of application and confirm the result satisfies that cycle’s qualification rule. Third, identify the seat category and counselling authority before paying a registration charge or filling choices. Finally, verify that the exact college and intake appear in the current permission and seat material. This order helps separate academic eligibility from competition for a seat, and from the college-specific decision about cost and training environment.
Keep dated copies of every controlling notice. A counselling timetable may be revised after publication, and a fee circular may describe a different batch or quota from a prospectus that remains online. Record the academic year, category, seat type and publication date beside each figure. If the responsible authority updates a notice, use the latest applicable instruction and retain the earlier document only to understand the change. Do not mix an old cutoff with a current seat matrix or combine a counselling deposit with annual tuition.
For language readiness, inspect the actual school certificate early. If Urdu, Arabic or Persian is absent, ask the chosen institution and counselling authority what evidence they require for the first-professional Urdu, Arabic and Mantiq wa Falsafa route. This is a formal academic requirement with course implications; it should not be left until after admission reporting. Prospective students can also request the college’s first-year timetable, language-support plan and assessment details. The regulation defines the requirement, while the institution must explain how it is implemented for the incoming batch.
For training quality, compare verifiable arrangements rather than labels. Ask for the current affiliation, regulatory permission for the relevant intake, attached-hospital details, professional-year calendar, clinical posting plan and internship rotation schedule. Confirm the university that conducts examinations and the process for completing internship records. A programme rule requiring clinical exposure is not a measurement of the number or quality of patient encounters at any specific campus. If a college does not publish these details, treat them as questions to resolve directly, not as proof of a deficiency or of a particular standard.
Cost comparison also needs a common basis. Put admission-time charges, recurring annual tuition, hostel and mess charges, examination costs, deposits and one-time fees in separate rows. Then note the academic years covered and whether a charge is refundable. Because the full BUMS pathway spans several professional phases and a compulsory internship, an annual figure should not be described as a total degree cost. Use only an official schedule for the selected institution and batch; an aggregator range cannot settle a student’s actual payable amount.
For 2026-27 BUMS admission, verify the current NCISM rules for recognised 10+2 or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry and Biology, category-specific combined PCB marks, Urdu, Arabic or Persian in Class 10 or 12 (or the specified first-professional Urdu, Arabic and Mantiq wa Falsafa route), and age 17 by 31 December of the admission year. NEET (UG)-2026 qualification is required for that cycle. Eligibility does not guarantee a seat; check the current counselling authority, category and quota rules. Pre-Tib is a separate route for specified Oriental qualifications.
A BUMS qualification and the compulsory internship are education milestones; professional practice requires the applicable registration in a State Register and/or National Register. Further study, teaching and employment have separate current eligibility and selection requirements. No job, salary or unrestricted practice outcome is guaranteed.
