There is no meaningful national BA LL.B. fee range without a defined year, university, campus, category, residential choice and list of included services. Schedules may separate tuition, facilities, examinations, hostel, mess, utilities, deposits and one-time admission charges. A total that includes food or a refundable deposit is not comparable to tuition alone.
NLSIU’s domestic undergraduate AY 2026-27 schedule lists tuition and facilities at ₹3,18,200 per annum and housing at ₹1,32,800, for a stated annual total of ₹4,51,000. It separately lists a one-time admission fee and a refundable security deposit. This is an NLSIU example for that year and fee category, not a general price for the degree. Consult its programme fee section.
Second Official Example
NALSAR’s official first-year BA LL.B. (Hons.) schedule for 2026-27 lists ₹1,65,000 tuition, ₹15,000 other academic charges, ₹67,000 user charges, ₹10,000 one-time payments, ₹40,000 mess advance and ₹20,000 refundable deposits, for a stated total of ₹3,17,000. The schedule gives ₹3,11,000 for SC/ST candidates. Room, internet, electricity, water and services are itemised within user charges; the mess advance and refundable deposits are separate components. See the official fee PDF.
This first-year NALSAR schedule and NLSIU’s annual total use different categories and labels. Neither is a complete five-year cost, and neither should be used as a low/high national benchmark. Ask each university for the current year-by-year schedule and the rules that govern revisions.
Budget And Refunds
Build a budget by separating recurring tuition and academic charges from housing, food, travel, books, printing, internships, moot travel and personal costs. Do not multiply first-year fees by five unless the university guarantees those amounts remain constant. Verify whether hostel is mandatory or guaranteed, what the meal plan covers, which deposits are refundable, what deductions apply and when a refund is returned.
Read the current scholarship and refund policies before paying. Confirm need or merit eligibility, application timing, renewal requirements, documentation and which charges are covered. A scholarship is not part of an affordable-cost calculation until the candidate qualifies and the award is confirmed. Keep the official offer, invoice, payment receipt and withdrawal terms. If the fee PDF and website disagree, use the latest notice for the correct cohort and request written clarification from the university.
Interpret Fee Lines
The NLSIU and NALSAR examples illustrate why students should keep fee components separate. NLSIU’s AY 2026-27 domestic UG page combines tuition and facilities in one annual line and lists housing separately; its stated total includes the housing fee. It also explains that the one-time admission amount and refundable security deposit are collected separately. NALSAR’s first-year fee PDF breaks out tuition, academic charges, user charges, one-time payments, mess advance and deposits. Its “total” includes amounts with different economic treatment: recurring costs, one-time charges, advances and refundable money.
When comparing offers, recalculate the non-refundable recurring amount separately from refundable deposits and advances. Ask whether the stated hostel line guarantees a room, what meal service is included, how utilities are billed and whether students can opt out of residence. Keep the amount due at admission separate from annual recurring costs. Do not combine these schedules into one ranking or present either institution’s amount as typical for BA LL.B. nationally.
Estimate Total Cost Responsibly
A five-year cost estimate should state assumptions. Start with the current first-year invoice, then add each year’s published tuition and compulsory charges. Include expected housing, food, books, travel, laptop, printing, internships, moot participation and fieldwork. Mark unknowns rather than filling them with a national average. Add a contingency for annual revisions if the university can change fees. Separate optional expenses from amounts required to retain admission.
Ask the finance office for the complete schedule applicable to your cohort and whether annual charges are fixed, indexed or revised by notification. Check which costs are paid to the university and which go to a hostel, mess or outside provider. Compare financial-aid eligibility, renewal conditions, deadlines and required family-income documents. A scholarship shown on a website is not an assured discount. Make two budgets if living at home or in a hostel is possible, and compare both with the actual programme location and commute.
Refund And Payment Protections
Before accepting a seat, read the withdrawal policy and determine the date-specific refund amount, non-refundable fee, processing deduction and procedure for requesting a refund. Check what happens after a later counselling upgrade or if the candidate does not report. Keep the receipt and the applicable policy version. If a deposit is refundable only after graduation or withdrawal, note the conditions and possible deductions for dues or damage. A mess advance may be reconciled under a separate account.
Pay only through the institution’s official portal or the method stated in its notice. Confirm the beneficiary and retain transaction references. Beware of unofficial agents claiming to guarantee a seat or faster refund. If an invoice uses a different fee schedule from the offer, request written clarification before paying. The official figures cited here are for AY 2026-27 and first-year examples; later cohorts and revisions need fresh verification from the university.
