Read the institution’s eligibility rule
BHM does not have one admission threshold that applies to every university. Jamia Millia Islamia’s self-financed BHM page states that applicants need a Senior Secondary School Certificate or equivalent from a recognised board, with at least 45% aggregate across the best five papers. Bengaluru University’s 2024–25-onward regulations say that students who have passed the two-year Pre-University course of Karnataka, Class XII or 10+2, or an equivalent qualification, may seek admission to its BHM degree. The first rule includes a marks threshold and a best-five calculation; the second names the qualifying examination. They are examples of institution-specific rules, not a single national cutoff.
Start with the exact programme, awarding university, campus and entry year. Confirm that the page refers to BHM rather than a different hospitality degree, a diploma or a lateral-entry route. Read the university regulation and current admission prospectus together. The regulation explains the academic rule; the prospectus may add application-year requirements, category provisions, documents or selection conditions. If pages disagree, ask the admissions office which dated notice governs the intake and keep its written response. A course directory can help locate a programme, but the awarding institution’s current notice should decide whether you qualify.
The two examples also show why applicants should not copy one institution’s threshold onto another. JMI specifies a minimum percentage and how the aggregate is calculated. The Bengaluru University clause cited here specifies a qualifying examination. Neither example establishes the rules for every college using the BHM name. Check the precise criteria attached to your programme.
Calculate marks on the stated basis
A percentage is meaningful only with its calculation basis. JMI’s wording refers to the aggregate of the best five papers. Verify which subjects are included, whether language papers count, how vocational subjects are treated and whether a board grade or CGPA needs conversion. Do not substitute the overall percentage on a marksheet if the prospectus defines a different calculation. Check whether candidates awaiting final results may apply provisionally and when final marks must be submitted.
The Bengaluru University rule cited above does not state JMI’s 45% threshold. It says a two-year Pre-University or Class XII/10+2 pass makes a student eligible to seek admission under those regulations. That distinction is useful: eligibility language may set a qualifying examination without publishing a marks percentage in the same clause. Any college-specific conditions, seat-allocation rules or changes for a later cohort must still be checked in the current notice.
Look for clauses on minimum marks, subjects, category concessions, improvement examinations and candidates who are still appearing. A marks rule can differ by admission year, and a published programme page may not contain all the application details. Save the prospectus or regulation that applies to your intake so you can compare your marks against the same wording used by the institution.
Qualification and equivalence
If you studied under a board outside the institution’s state, confirm what it accepts as equivalent to Senior Secondary or 10+2. Applicants with an international credential, open-school qualification, diploma or unusual subject combination should seek a written assessment before paying a non-refundable fee. Ask which documents must be uploaded and whether originals are checked before admission. Names, dates of birth and category details should match across records; if a correction is needed, find out whether it must be completed before the application closes.
The phrase “Class XII or equivalent” does not by itself confirm subject combinations, age rules or relaxations. The two institutional examples here do not establish those additional rules across India. Where the prospectus is silent, do not fill the gap with a condition from another course or entrance examination. Contact the institution and retain the response with the dated admission notice. If an equivalence certificate is required, ask which authority issues it and by what date it must be submitted.
Prepare marksheets, proof of passing, identity records and any category documents requested by the portal. This is a preparation list, not a claim that every BHM provider requires the same documents. Use the application portal’s actual checklist and ask about provisional admission if your final certificate has not been issued.
Before you apply
Use this checklist against the official course and admission pages:
- Confirm the exact BHM title, awarding university, college and campus.
- Check the accepted qualifying examination, equivalent credentials and marks calculation.
- Read any subject, category, age or appearing-candidate conditions in the current prospectus.
- Note when final marks and original documents must be supplied.
- Save the dated notice, submitted form, payment receipt and written clarifications.
Meeting the academic minimum does not necessarily mean you are selected. Admission may also depend on an institution’s entrance test, merit list, counselling or seat availability. Keep eligibility and selection as separate checks: eligibility asks whether you may apply; selection explains how the institution chooses among applicants. Read the current admission page for the second question.
The JMI and Bengaluru University rules give useful reference points, but only the institution accepting your application can confirm your final eligibility for that intake. If the relevant notice is unavailable or a qualification is unusual, ask before submitting a payment. Do not rely on an old cutoff or a rule copied from another university simply because both courses are called BHM.
