BPT syllabus: subjects, clinical learning and internship
The BPT curriculum combines biomedical foundations with physiotherapy knowledge, practical skill development and supervised clinical education. The competency-based curriculum approved by NCAHP in 2025 is scheduled for mandatory implementation from academic year 2026–27. Students should check the university syllabus and transition order for their own cohort, because older batches may continue under an earlier course scheme. Foundations and physiotherapy subjects
The programme builds knowledge of the human body and healthcare alongside physiotherapy-specific learning. Subject families include anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and other biomedical foundations; movement and functional assessment; exercise and physical agents; clinical reasoning; and physiotherapy across relevant clinical areas. The legacy Ministry of Health and Family Welfare handbook, for example, lists anatomy, physiology, exercise therapy, physical agents and clinical education. It is a 2017 model handbook and does not replace the newer NCAHP competency curriculum. MoHFW model curriculum handbook
The new curriculum emphasizes competencies as well as knowledge. Students should expect learning that connects assessment, planning, safe intervention, documentation, communication, ethics and evidence-informed practice. Verify exact subject titles, sequence, credit distribution, examinations and teaching hours in the university’s official syllabus for the batch.
From subject knowledge to clinical reasoning
A competency-based curriculum is meant to connect what students know with what they can demonstrate under appropriate supervision. In physiotherapy, this means learning to understand movement and function, gather relevant information, communicate, reason about a problem, plan an intervention within scope and review progress. This sequence is an educational description, not a promise that every course uses identical teaching methods or that a student can independently perform clinical work before meeting the required training and registration conditions. The official NCAHP curriculum and the university’s examination regulations are the controlling references for the admitted cohort.
When reading the syllabus, distinguish a subject title from its learning outcomes and assessment. A course may list anatomy, physiology, biomechanics or exercise therapy, but the practical question is how those areas are integrated into skills laboratories, case discussions, supervised clinical exposure and examinations. Ask for the applicable curriculum document, academic calendar, practical assessment rules and attendance requirements. If two colleges use similar subject lists, that alone does not prove equal clinical exposure or teaching resources.
Track the cohort transition
The NCAHP notice made the competency-based curriculum optional from 2025–26 and mandatory from 2026–27. The word “mandatory” describes the implementation schedule for institutions, while a student’s precise academic sequence still depends on the admission cohort and applicable university rules. KEM’s page describes its September–October 2026 batch as four academic and clinical years plus a one-year internship. That institutional example helps illustrate how a new structure may be presented; it should not replace another university’s ordinance. Earlier entrants may remain governed by an older scheme even while new students begin the revised one.
Ask the registrar or department to confirm in writing: curriculum version, semester or professional-year sequence, progression examinations, repeat rules, internship eligibility, rotation completion and final award requirements. This is especially useful when public pages are updated at different times. If an institution describes a 4.5-year programme but its intake is in a transition year, request the exact ordinance for that cohort before estimating the finish date. Never add a separate internship to a total that already includes it.
How to make a study plan from the official documents
Once admitted, map the published learning outcomes to the calendar. Mark theory, practical, clinical and examination periods separately, then identify prerequisites and attendance rules. Keep a skills log only in the format authorized by the institution; clinical records may be confidential and must be handled under local policy. Use faculty feedback to identify gaps early, especially where a practical skill requires repeated demonstration. A syllabus is a framework, not a self-study checklist that authorizes practice.
For applicants comparing programmes, ask how the institution supports students in laboratories, what equipment is available for scheduled learning, how clinical postings are supervised and how travel to teaching sites works. Request the policy on missed placements and make-up requirements. These questions translate a curriculum document into a realistic view of the weekly commitment without inventing a universal timetable.
Practical and clinical education
Practical learning develops the ability to use assessment and movement-related concepts under supervision. Clinical education provides structured exposure to patient-care settings and depends on institution facilities, supervisors, affiliation and current permissions. Applicants can ask for clinical sites, supervision, assessment and whether travel or accommodation costs are additional.
The curriculum transition also changes programme length. KEM describes its upcoming September–October 2026 batch as four years of academic and clinical education followed by one year of compulsory internship. Older sources describing four years plus six months may refer to an earlier cohort. Confirm the year-specific university ordinance rather than merging the two structures into one universal syllabus. Internship and completion
For the new five-year structure, the final year is a compulsory internship following four academic and clinical years. Internship rotations and requirements should be checked in the applicable curriculum and university rules. Ask how completion is documented, whether attendance or competency requirements apply, and what happens if a placement is delayed. Internship is not interchangeable with a casual observation period.
Compare two BPT syllabi
Compare the governing curriculum year, total duration, clinical education hours and locations, assessment method, internship length, subject sequence, research or evidence-learning components and student support. Then check which parts are nationally prescribed and which are institution-specific. Do not infer quality from a subject list alone; supervised practice, facilities and current institutional approval matter too.
