Read the current ER-2020 framework, not an old subject list
The Pharmacy Council of India’s Education Regulations, 2020 establish a two-part academic course with separate theory, practical and tutorial allocations. PCI’s companion Diploma in Pharmacy Curriculum and Syllabus supplies the course codes, learning outcomes and detailed topics. The national subject structure is a useful map, but students should use the syllabus and amendments applicable to their batch and the examining authority’s current instructions.
Part I: foundational pharmaceutical and health sciences
Part I includes Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacognosy, Human Anatomy and Physiology, and Social Pharmacy. The Gazette assigns 75 theory hours, 75 practical hours and 25 tutorial hours to each of these subject areas. The syllabus then expands the course into objectives, outcomes and individual learning units. This mix brings together dosage-form foundations and laboratory work with medicine-related science, plant-derived materials, body systems and social-health context.
A practical study plan should keep theory and laboratory preparation connected. For each course code, maintain a checklist of the prescribed outcomes, class activities, practical records and assessment requirements. Use the official syllabus’s own codes and terminology so that revision notes do not accidentally combine an older ER-91 topic list with ER-2020 material.
Part II: medicines, patient care and pharmacy operations
Part II includes Pharmacology; Community Pharmacy and Management; Biochemistry and Clinical Pathology; Pharmacotherapeutics; Hospital and Clinical Pharmacy; and Pharmacy Law and Ethics. ER-2020 assigns theory, practical and tutorial hours by course. Some subjects have a practical course alongside theory; Pharmacy Law and Ethics has a theory allocation in the Gazette table.
These subjects connect how medicines act and are handled with pharmacy services, patient-focused use, clinical settings and the legal responsibilities of the profession. The syllabus is not a licence to diagnose or prescribe independently. Practical and patient-facing competencies remain bounded by supervision, law and the registered professional’s role.
Assessment and training are part of the curriculum
PCI’s regulations describe annual Part I and Part II examinations with written and practical components, including viva voce. They also require at least 75% attendance separately in theory and practical classes in each subject for examination eligibility. The examining authority may publish schedules, supplementary-exam criteria and administrative details that students must follow for their batch.
After the Part II examination, the learner completes Part III practical training: 500 hours over at least three months under the conditions described in PCI regulations. The syllabus and rules identify relevant activities such as records, prescriptions, dispensing and storage. At least 250 hours are to be devoted to dispensing. Students should confirm the approved training site, supervisor, contract and completion certificate process with their institution.
How to study from the official syllabus
Download the PCI ER-2020 syllabus and identify the version or circular relevant to the enrolled batch. Cross-check each course code against the college timetable and examination notice. Mark each topic as taught, practised and assessed; keep practical records in the format required by the institution. For any topic that appears in a college handout but not in the official syllabus, ask whether it is local enrichment or a regulatory change. Do not infer that an older syllabus applies just because it is easier to find online.
Subject hours and practical balance
The Gazette’s Part I table assigns 75 theory, 75 practical and 25 tutorial hours to each of its five subject areas, for a total of 375 theory, 375 practical and 125 tutorial hours. Part II lists six subject areas and assigns a total of 450 theory, 225 practical and 150 tutorial hours. These figures are regulatory minimum course allocations in ER-2020; the syllabus and college timetable explain how the work is organized. They are not a prediction of an individual student’s timetable or exam weightage.
The syllabus document sets course codes and outcomes. For example, theory and practical components are listed separately for Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacognosy, Anatomy and Physiology, Social Pharmacy, Pharmacology and several Part II areas. The practical courses allow students to apply the concepts in controlled settings. Keep a separate record for each code so that laboratory attendance and work are not lost inside a general subject notebook.
Assessment, progression and records
PCI’s Education Regulations specify annual Part I and Part II examinations with theory and practical assessment, including viva voce. The tables define maximum marks and internal sessional components; students should consult the official syllabus and their examining authority’s current instructions for the applicable batch. ER-2020 also requires at least 75% attendance in theory and practical classes separately in every subject before examination eligibility. Local administrative deadlines and forms should be checked with the college.
Build a study plan around the actual practical records and assessment pattern. For each topic, note the relevant course outcome, lecture content, laboratory or tutorial task and assessment evidence. Ask instructors which practical files need signatures and when they are reviewed. Before an examination, verify the current timetable, permitted materials, practical/viva format and supplementary-exam criteria from the responsible examining body. Do not assume that a coaching-site summary accurately reflects the board’s rules.
Batch and syllabus version checks
PCI explains that the syllabus and training may be modified from time to time. Students should therefore confirm which ER-2020 version, circular or transition rule applies to the admission batch. A document dated 2021 remains the official published curriculum source used here, but any subsequent PCI amendment must be considered if it applies to the student. Check the regulator’s syllabus page and the examining authority’s notifications before relying on an older PDF.
If a college teaches additional material, ask whether it is local enrichment, a university requirement or a formal PCI amendment. This helps avoid mixing a useful lecture with the examinable national syllabus. Save the exact version and course codes provided to the batch, and use the official terminology in revision notes and practical records.
The course is not clinical authorization. The curriculum supports the defined competencies of pharmacy education; it does not independently authorize diagnosis or prescribing. Students should learn patient communication, safe handling, ethical practice and the limits of their future role alongside subject content.
The detailed subject codes and outcomes are in PCI’s Diploma in Pharmacy Curriculum and Syllabus based on ER-2020. The Education Regulations, 2020 set the hours, attendance and examination framework; verify any later amendment with PCI and the examining authority.
