MBA admission is a sequence, not a single score
Most MBA applications involve separate decisions by the test provider and each institution. A typical path is to shortlist programmes, take an accepted entrance test, submit a separate application, meet the institution’s screening rules, complete interviews or written assessments, and accept an offer by its deadline. The exact order and stages vary. An exam score does not create a college application, reserve a counselling seat or guarantee admission.
Start by choosing programmes rather than assuming one test will work everywhere. Make a list by credential, format, location, tuition range and career goal. Read the latest admissions notice for each exact programme and applicant category. Record the accepted test, score validity, form deadline, required documents, later assessment and offer schedule. The same institution may operate several MBA routes with different eligibility and selection rules.
Match the entrance exam to your target course
Institutions decide which entrance tests they accept. NTA describes CMAT as a national-level management entrance examination and says its score is accepted by AICTE-approved institutions, university departments, constituent colleges and affiliated colleges. That provides a starting point for identifying participating institutions, but it does not mean that every MBA programme in those institutions accepts CMAT in every cycle. Check the programme’s own admissions page and its current notice before registering. NTA Management Exam
IIMA is one example of route-specific admissions. Its flagship PGP page names CAT for domestic applicants and GMAT for overseas Indian applicants or foreign nationals. Shortlisted applicants also complete an analytical writing test and personal interview, and the page says selection considers academic performance as well as exam performance. IIMA’s blended BPGP uses a different route for batch 2026-28: applicants could use its IIMA Admission Test or specified recent CAT, GMAT or GRE results, subject to validity conditions. These are IIMA programme rules, not universal MBA requirements. IIMA PGP admissions · IIMA BPGP admissions
Choose a test only after matching its result timeline to your applications. Check exam date, result release, score validity and the institution’s deadline for receiving an official score report. If several target programmes accept different tests, compare registration fees and preparation time before committing. Keep a backup route if a score may arrive after the application closes. A third-party list that says “MBA entrance exam accepted” is a lead, not confirmation for your intake.
Understand shortlist, interview and final merit
Admissions policies distinguish minimum eligibility, shortlisting and final selection. The minimum lets you apply; it is not necessarily the score needed for an interview. Shortlists may use overall and section scores, prior academics, work experience, category-specific rules or other factors. Later assessment may include a written exercise, interview, group discussion or presentation. A candidate can meet eligibility and still be screened out at any later stage.
Read the policy for the batch you intend to join. Note how the school uses school-leaving marks, undergraduate results, work history and test scores. If it publishes weights, record whether they apply to shortlisting or final merit. Confirm whether the work-experience cut-off is measured on the application date, interview date or another specified day. Do not treat last year’s cutoff as a promise: applicant pools and rules change.
Some admissions processes are run directly by the institution; others use a state or centralized counselling system. NTA’s CMAT page describes the test and its stated score-acceptance scope. It does not replace the target school’s application instructions. Make sure you understand whether you must register separately for an entrance test, a counselling round and each programme application. Save the payment receipt and submission confirmation for every portal.
Build a deadline tracker
Use one row per programme, not one row per university. Record the exact award, campus, format, intake, accepted exam, test-registration deadline, college-form deadline, score-report process, shortlist date, interview window, result date, offer expiry and initial payment. Include a source link and the date you last checked it. Domestic, international, full-time and executive routes may publish separate calendars.
Work backward from the earliest deadline. Allow time for transcripts, category certificates, recommendation letters, test reports and corrections to your application. Final-year students should verify whether provisional results are accepted and by what date the degree proof is required. Applicants with work experience should obtain employer letters that establish role and dates in the format requested by the school.
Budget for application charges separately from programme tuition. IIMA’s BPGP admissions page for 2026-28, for example, lists different application fees for CAT/GMAT/GRE versus IAT routes, with another amount for the Dubai IAT centre. Those are fees for one programme and batch; other schools set their own amounts. Recheck the application portal before payment because the deadline and charge may be revised. IIMA BPGP admissions
Prepare for interviews and written assessments
When shortlisted, read the invitation carefully. It may specify interview mode, identification documents, upload requirements, time limits, technology checks or whether a written assessment comes first. Prepare to explain why you want management study now, what you learned from work or academics, and how the specific programme fits your goals. Be able to discuss claims in your own application, including career changes, gaps and projects.
Use preparation to sharpen clear thinking, not memorize scripts. Review concepts connected to your academic or professional background and be ready to explain decisions with evidence. For group exercises, practise making a concise point, listening and adding to discussion. The school’s stated criteria matter more than a generic interview checklist.
Applicants to blended or executive formats should explain how they will balance study, employment and any campus travel. Full-time applicants should assess the opportunity cost of pausing work. Ask students about workload and class scheduling, but verify formal attendance and assessment rules from the programme handbook.
Compare offers before paying a deposit
An offer decision should consider credential, curriculum, attendance, duration, full cost, refund terms, internship access and cohort outcomes. Request a complete fee schedule if the public page omits deposits or compulsory charges. Check whether a seat-confirmation payment is credited to tuition and what portion is refundable if you withdraw. If aid is conditional, understand renewal rules and whether it covers tuition or living costs.
Read placement data as a cohort report. Check who was eligible, who sought employment, the number of accepted offers and how many salary observations were available. IIMA’s PGP final-placement announcement for MBA-PGP Class of 2025 reports median salary ₹34.59 lakh per annum for that named cohort. It is not a general MBA prediction. Compare only reports with compatible programme and denominator definitions; the highest-package number alone is not a reliable guide to typical outcomes. IIMA PGP Final Placements 2024-25
Before you submit an application
For each course, verify the credential and campus; confirm your academic and work-experience eligibility; check accepted exams and score validity; note deadlines; submit a separate institutional form; arrange official score reports and documents; understand interview stages; estimate total cost; and review the programme’s recent outcomes. If a rule is unclear, write to admissions with your exact degree, graduation date, applicant category and work history. Save the answer beside the official notice.
For 2027-28 planning, do not infer future deadlines from a 2026 batch or an old application calendar. The IIMA PGP and BPGP pages show different routes and stages; they do not announce one policy for the full MBA category. Recheck official notices and corrigenda before taking an exam or paying a non-refundable application fee.
