MBA eligibility is set by each programme
There is no single marks threshold, age limit or work-experience rule that applies to every MBA in India. Eligibility is set by the institution and programme, and can differ between a full-time degree, a blended MBA, an executive format and a diploma. Before preparing for an entrance test, open the current official admission notice and check the exact award, prior-degree requirement, minimum marks or grade, final-year conditions, category rules, work-experience definition and the date on which each condition is measured. Being allowed to sit an entrance exam does not automatically make you eligible for every programme that accepts the score.
Start with the prior qualification. A programme may require a recognized bachelor’s degree, a minimum duration of prior study, specified subjects, a minimum aggregate or proof that the final result is available by a stated date. The programme notice controls. If it says “bachelor’s degree or equivalent,” verify whether your qualification and awarding institution meet that definition and which documents are accepted. Candidates with foreign degrees, professional qualifications or distance-learning credentials should request a written interpretation from the admissions office rather than rely on informal equivalence claims.
Keep exam eligibility separate from college eligibility
An entrance exam has its own registration rules. A score may have a published acceptance scope, while each programme adds separate conditions. NTA describes CMAT as an entrance test for management programmes and says its score is accepted by AICTE-approved institutions, university departments, constituent colleges and affiliated colleges. That statement does not mean every MBA in those institutions accepts CMAT in every admission year, nor does it promise a shortlist. Confirm acceptance for the specific programme and cycle before paying for the test. NTA Management Exam
The same distinction applies to final-year candidates and marks. An exam bulletin may permit registration while a bachelor’s degree is in progress; a college may still specify the date by which the degree must be completed or a minimum aggregate needed for the programme. Keep two checklists: the exam’s requirements and each institution’s requirements. Confirm whether provisional admission is possible, when the final transcript is due and what happens if the result arrives late.
Work experience depends on the format
A full-time MBA may consider fresh graduates and people who have worked, without requiring a minimum number of years. That does not mean experience is irrelevant: an institution may use it in shortlisting or classroom composition. Read how the programme defines eligible work, whether internships count, its cut-off date and the evidence it accepts. Employer letters or payslips may be required. Do not count overlapping jobs twice or include a period that the official definition excludes.
Blended and executive programmes can make experience a mandatory condition because the class and format are designed around working professionals. IIMA’s BPGP admissions page for batch 2026-28 is one specific example: it required working professionals and entrepreneurs to have at least three years of full-time work after graduation as of April 30, 2026. This is not a general MBA threshold and should not be transferred to IIMA’s flagship PGP or another school. IIMA BPGP admissions
Read age and marks rules with their date
The same IIMA BPGP page specified a minimum age of 24 as of April 30, 2026, with no upper age limit, and a bachelor’s degree or specified professional qualification in any discipline with at least 50 percent marks or equivalent CGPA. It also listed the tests that could be used for that batch, under programme-specific validity conditions. Those rules belong to IIMA BPGP 2026-28; they do not establish a national age or marks rule and do not announce a later batch’s requirements. Recheck the page and application portal for the cohort you intend to join.
IIMA describes its flagship PGP differently: the page presents it as a residential MBA for graduates from different disciplines and names CAT for domestic applicants and GMAT for overseas Indian applicants or foreign nationals. Shortlisted candidates face additional assessment, and prior academic performance is considered. The PGP page does not make the BPGP experience condition a PGP requirement. IIMA PGP admissions
Category, disability and international documentation
If applying under a reserved category, verify the entrance application’s category rules and the institution’s policy separately. Check certificate format, issuing authority and validity date. The category selected on an exam form does not replace the school’s document verification. Keep names and dates consistent across test registration and college applications so mismatches do not delay a shortlist or offer.
Applicants with disabilities should ask the institution early about the evidence and process for test, interview or classroom accommodations. Confirm the deadline for requests and the office that handles them; do not wait until the assessment date. For foreign qualifications or international applicant routes, ask about credential equivalence, passport or residency classification, score validity and language documents. IIMA’s domestic CAT versus overseas-candidate GMAT route is an IIMA PGP example, not a universal international-admission rule.
A quick eligibility screen before applying
Write down the exact programme and intake, then answer these questions from its current notice: What credential will I receive? Does my prior degree meet the institution’s definition? Is there a marks threshold, and how is the aggregate calculated? Can a final-year student apply, and when must the degree be completed? Is work experience mandatory, and what counts? Which test score is accepted, and when does its validity end? Are there age, category, language or document conditions that apply to me?
If an answer depends on interpretation, contact admissions with your degree title, awarding institution, graduation date and work history. Ask for the response in writing and save the notice version. Do not infer eligibility from an older brochure, a coaching summary or the fact that an exam authority allowed you to register. A later corrigendum can supersede an earlier prospectus.
Eligibility is a gate, not an admission prediction
Meeting the basic requirements allows an application to be considered; it does not guarantee a shortlist or offer. Institutions may apply separate score thresholds, academic screens, interviews or final merit rules. Work experience or a high test score does not waive an academic condition unless the programme expressly says so. Evaluate a university MBA, MMS, PGDM and executive or blended course independently even if they share a campus or entrance test.
For 2027-28 planning, use published examples only as examples. The IIMA BPGP conditions above are from the 2026-28 batch page; IIMA’s PGP route is from its current admissions page checked in October 2026. Neither is an announcement of all later MBA rules. Reopen the official notice before registration and again before accepting an offer.
