The Master of Laws, commonly written LL.M. or LLM, is a postgraduate law degree for graduates seeking advanced study in selected areas of law, legal research, policy, governance or related academic work. It is not one centrally identical course. Universities set their own admission rules, academic calendar, duration, course combinations, dissertation requirements, fees and delivery arrangements, within applicable higher-education and legal-education requirements. A useful comparison begins with the exact institution, campus, cohort and prospectus, rather than with a single national duration or fee figure.
An LL.M. normally moves beyond broad foundational coverage of an LL.B. Students examine legal doctrines in greater depth, compare approaches across jurisdictions or subject areas, evaluate statutes and judgments, and develop research and writing skills. A programme may ask students to take compulsory papers, select electives, complete seminars, submit a dissertation or research project, or combine these elements. The balance is institution-specific. Read the current course regulations and syllabus to learn whether the degree is coursework-based, research-oriented, concentration-led or a mixture.
The degree can help a student pursue a focused academic question, understand a specialist field, prepare for some research or teaching pathways where additional qualifications and selection are required, or add advanced legal study to work in policy, compliance or related settings. These are possible uses, not promises of a job, promotion or eligibility for a regulated role. The value depends on prior education, programme quality, faculty and supervision, subject choices, research output, location and the requirements of the intended employer or institution.
Do not assume that every Indian LL.M. lasts one year or two years. NLSIU describes its domestic LL.M. as a one-year programme, and the GGSIPU 2026-27 intake portal lists a one-year regular LL.M. (code 112). By contrast, the University of Delhi Faculty of Law's 2023-24 prospectus describes a two-year LL.M. course, and its materials include a three-year LL.M. variant. These examples come from different institutions and editions. They show why the title alone cannot establish duration or a national transition rule. Confirm the exact programme regulation, entry cohort, permitted maximum completion period and whether the published structure includes dissertation or other requirements. The UGC's 2025 minimum-standards regulations set a broader postgraduate framework, including general entry standards. They do not make these institutional examples interchangeable or, by themselves, specify one universal LL.M. duration. Legal education also has a separate regulator context: the BCI's 2024 circular addresses legal-education reforms and LL.M. recognition or mode issues. Read current instruments and university ordinances together; a circular reference should not become a blanket conclusion about every institution or delivery mode.
Applicants typically need a qualifying law degree, but the accepted award, minimum marks, grading conversion, category relaxation, result-awaited treatment and document rules must be checked in the institution's current notice. NLSIU, for example, publishes a 50% threshold for General/OBC/PWD candidates and 45% for SC/ST candidates in its domestic programme information and requires CLAT for that route. Another university may use different thresholds or an additional condition. Do not assume CLAT PG is universal: it is the stated domestic route at NLSIU and appears in GGSIPU's 2026-27 LLM admissions notices, while other institutions may have their own test or selection process. International admissions can also differ from domestic admissions; NLSIU describes a separate international route.
A student should verify the exact degree certificate and mark sheets, category documents, entrance score validity, application and counselling steps, and the date by which the qualifying degree must be completed. Check whether the course is regular, online, distance or otherwise delivered. BCI's published 2024 circular raises recognition and mode restrictions for legal education; applicants should verify the institution, programme and mode against operative requirements rather than treating any online listing as equivalent. The UGC's general recognition framework and the law regulator's role answer different questions.
A typical LL.M. curriculum may include comparative constitutional law, jurisprudence, legal research methods, human rights, international law, corporate and commercial regulation, criminal justice, intellectual property, environmental law, technology law or public policy. That list is illustrative, not a common national syllabus. A university may require core papers and let students choose from limited electives, offer named concentrations, or organize the course around a dissertation. Confirm what is actually taught in the year you intend to join, how often electives run, whether a minimum enrolment applies, how assessment works and whether dissertation supervision is available in your topic.
A useful comparison inspects course descriptions and assessment, not merely marketing labels. Look for research-methods instruction, access to primary legal sources, supervised writing, seminar discussion, feedback, ethics and evidence-informed reasoning. If you want a specific field, ask whether it is a formal concentration on the transcript or simply optional papers. Check whether a dissertation is compulsory, its credit weight, submission timeline and rules for topic approval. A programme can be academically broad even when a brochure highlights a few attractive specialisms.
There is no single national fee for LL.M. from the available schedules. The amount depends on university and college, academic session, quota or funding category, payment schedule and charges included. Compare the same academic year, programme, campus, student category and payment basis. Separate tuition from facilities, admission charges, refundable security, hostel or off-campus housing, meals, examination charges, books, travel and personal costs. Ask whether annual figures are guaranteed for the full degree or can change in later years.
For a dated illustration, NLSIU's domestic postgraduate schedule for AY 2026-27 lists tuition and facilities of ₹3,18,200 per annum and off-campus housing with meals of ₹1,88,200 per annum, for a stated annual student cost of ₹5,06,400. The same page lists a one-time admission fee of ₹13,900 and refundable security deposits of ₹18,800 for SC/ST students and ₹23,700 for others, subject to stated deductions. This is an NLSIU-specific annual schedule and housing basis, not a national average or a promise of total cost for any LL.M. Verify the latest schedule, accommodation availability and refund terms for your own offer. NLSIU AY 2026-27 fee details
LL.M. graduates may pursue further research, academic work where appointment rules are met, policy analysis, legal research, consulting, compliance, regulatory affairs, dispute-resolution support, public-sector examinations, or specialist work within an existing legal career. Whether a role requires an LL.B., bar enrolment, experience, a doctoral degree, a competitive examination or another licence depends on the employer and applicable rules. An LL.M. is not a substitute for the qualifying law degree or the process for enrolment and practice as an advocate. Do not treat the postgraduate degree alone as authority to appear in court or provide regulated legal services.
Before enrolling, define the outcome you want and test whether the programme supports it: review faculty and supervision in your field, dissertation options, academic calendar, alumni information with clear cohort and denominator, and the requirements of target employers. Ask what evidence a placement claim covers and whether it reports LL.M. students separately. A university-wide placement headline cannot be assumed to represent this course. Compare direct and opportunity costs with realistic alternatives. No course page can guarantee employment, salary, admission to a PhD or professional recognition.
Confirm the awarding university and campus; exact programme title and cohort; mode of study; approved and recognized status; duration and maximum completion period; qualifying degree and marks rules; entrance route and counselling; actual compulsory and elective papers; dissertation requirements; annual fee components and refund rules; scholarship eligibility; and complaint or academic-appeal process. Ask for items in writing where the prospectus is silent. Verify changes through an official notice rather than a coaching page or a previous year's brochure.
The sources cited here span different institutions and years to illustrate variation. They do not replace an applicant's current prospectus, official admission notice, regulations or fee offer. Recheck the source for your admission year, especially where rules, fees, course duration or programme delivery have changed. A 2023 or 2026 citation remains an example from that edition; it does not silently update itself to another cohort.
A shorter LL.M. may suit someone who can study intensively over a compact academic year; a longer format can distribute coursework and research across more terms. Neither pattern guarantees deeper learning. Compare contact hours, total credits, assessment calendar, dissertation time, attendance, internship or clinical expectations and maximum completion period. Ask how the course handles illness, failed papers, resits and extensions. If you plan to work alongside study, request the weekly timetable and determine whether compulsory seminars and research milestones fit that plan.
Consider whether you want breadth or depth. A general stream may let you sample several legal fields, while a concentration can create a more coherent set of electives. A dissertation can give a student sustained work on one question, but its value depends on supervision and feasible access to sources. A large menu is not useful if the papers you need rarely run. Check actual recent offerings and ask the department about expected availability for your cohort. Do not infer a formal specialization from an elective list or assume that a concentration appears on the transcript.
An LL.M. dissertation or project is different from a long classroom assignment. Students may need to formulate a narrow research question, review statutes, cases and scholarship, choose a method, identify limitations and develop a defensible argument. Some topics require empirical evidence, ethics review or permission to access records. Ask when proposals are due, how supervisors are allocated, how often progress is reviewed, and how the work is assessed. If you hope to continue to doctoral research, review the dissertation requirements and the target PhD programme's current entry criteria rather than assuming one qualification automatically leads to the next.
Research ability is also useful outside academia: legal and policy roles can require concise analysis, source checking, drafting, comparison and explanation of uncertainty. The curriculum may teach these skills through seminars, writing assignments, clinical projects or moot work. Verify the actual course design. A prospectus describing a research focus is not proof of one-to-one supervision or publication opportunities for every student.
The institutional examples in this guide answer limited questions. NLSIU demonstrates a one-year domestic structure, a specified CLAT and marks rule, and a 2026-27 annual fee schedule. GGSIPU's current intake portal establishes that its code 112 programme was listed as a one-year regular LL.M. for AY 2026-27; the applicable admissions brochure and notices govern its eligibility, entrance and counselling details. Delhi University's 2023-24 prospectus shows a two-year structure and a subject menu in that edition. None sets another university's duration, marks threshold, fee or syllabus.
When using an example, copy its qualifiers: institution, campus, year, candidate group, domestic or international route, course code, fee period and whether a charge is refundable. Do not carry a past deadline forward, convert a per-annum cost into a full-programme price, or report a dated course structure as today's universal rule. If a current notice is not available, say that it remains to be checked rather than filling the gap with a remembered or aggregator figure.
For each programme, ask: Which body awards the degree? What exact law qualification and marks are accepted? Is an entrance test required, and is a separate application needed? What duration and academic regulations apply to my cohort? Which courses are compulsory, and which electives are guaranteed to run? Is the dissertation mandatory and how is supervision arranged? What is the complete fee schedule by year, and which components are refundable? What mode and location are authorized? What does the university say about professional recognition? These questions convert a course title into a comparable choice.
Record answers next to their official source and date. Where a response is verbal, request written confirmation for eligibility, mode, fees or recognition. Recheck the information before paying a non-refundable amount and again before joining if the university issues a revised notice. Keep a copy of the offer and the rules it cites. This process cannot eliminate all uncertainty, but it helps distinguish a programme feature from a general expectation.
