LL.M. fees: compare a real schedule, not a national headline
LL.M. tuition is set by each institution and can differ by programme, campus, academic year, student category, mode and housing choice. A single course-level figure cannot tell an applicant the price of a particular offer. Compare the official fee circular for the correct intake and distinguish tuition from facilities, admission, examination, library, student welfare, hostel or housing, meals, refundable security and other one-time charges. For a multi-year course, ask whether the fee can rise in later years.
Dated official example: NLSIU domestic PG, AY 2026-27
NLSIU's LL.M. page publishes a domestic postgraduate AY 2026-27 schedule. It lists tuition and facilities of ₹3,18,200 per annum and off-campus housing of ₹1,88,200 per annum, for a total cost to student of ₹5,06,400 per annum. The stated housing fee includes a meal plan with breakfast, lunch, dinner and an evening snack. The page also lists a one-time admission fee of ₹13,900. A refundable security deposit is ₹18,800 for SC/ST students and ₹23,700 for other students, subject to deductions stated by the university. These are specific schedule components, not one universal LL.M. price. Verify the current schedule and accommodation conditions before budgeting. NLSIU LL.M. AY 2026-27 fees
Do not add a one-time fee or refundable deposit to recurring tuition and call the result annual tuition. Conversely, a published annual “total cost” may omit books, travel, personal expenses or later-year changes. Use a worksheet that labels each item, whether it recurs, the year it covers, whether it is refundable and the payment deadline. Note whether the cost is per term, per year or for the full programme.
Compare offers on the same basis
For each institution record tuition by year or term, compulsory institutional charges, housing, meals, security deposit, examination and dissertation fees, and optional charges. Check whether the rate differs for domestic and international candidates, reserved categories, state quotas, sponsored students or modes of study. Do not combine an international schedule with a domestic offer or assume an optional hostel room is guaranteed. Ask whether the fee is fixed for the duration of enrolment and what happens if the programme extends beyond its normal period.
When a university gives a total, request an itemized schedule and written confirmation of the covered academic session. Look for payment instalments, late charges, withdrawal dates, refund deductions and the process for claiming a deposit back. If financial aid is available, read its eligibility and continuation conditions separately; a scholarship announcement is not automatically available to every LL.M. student. Compare net cost only after confirming what aid is actually awarded.
Build a realistic budget
Tuition is only one cost of attendance. Students may need to budget for housing, meals, books, printing, digital legal databases, laptop or connectivity, local transport, travel home, research expenses and an emergency reserve. A dissertation may require archive access, fieldwork or interviews, but only where the research design calls for them and any required ethics approval is obtained. Do not assume a stipend or paid internship unless official programme terms state one.
For each option, calculate expected cost for the actual duration, but do not multiply an annual figure mechanically if the university publishes different later-year rates or if the programme has an extension period. Label any estimate as your calculation and list assumptions. Ask about payment timing so you can plan cash flow. For a two-year programme, check both years' published rates and the policy for revisions; for a one-year format, ensure the fee quote covers the whole academic year and all required components.
What this comparison cannot establish
The NLSIU schedule is one institution's 2026-27 domestic PG fee example with specified annual components. It cannot represent public, private, aided, unaided or state-university pricing across India, and it is not a “typical” national fee. No comparable institution-wide dataset has been established here to support a universal minimum, maximum or average. Course aggregates in a catalogue can reflect different campuses and collection bases; do not substitute them for a verified offer letter.
Before paying, confirm the official account and portal, match the schedule to your offer and category, read refund rules, and retain receipts. Recheck prices against the institution's current notice for your intake. A figure cited for 2026-27 remains a dated example in this evergreen guide and does not state that a future cycle's applications or charges are open.
Questions to send to admissions
Ask whether the annual amount is fixed for the programme, which charges recur, whether a hostel or housing place is guaranteed, which utilities or meals are included, the deposit refund timeline, and the deductions that can apply. Confirm whether the fee differs by category or domestic/international status and whether financial aid reduces the invoice before payment or reimburses later. If you are offered a seat after a round, verify the payment deadline in the official portal and retain proof of transaction. These questions turn a headline figure into a usable budget while preserving the distinction between tuition and full attendance cost.
