MSW eligibility is set by the admitting university and can vary by programme, campus, category and admission year. A common route is a completed bachelor’s degree, sometimes in any discipline, but applicants must check the exact current prospectus rather than infer a rule from the degree name. Minimum marks, entrance tests, interviews, work experience, language requirements and provisional admission for final-year students differ. There is no single national MSW eligibility standard that guarantees entry to every programme.
The qualifying degree
Many social work departments accept graduates from a broad range of fields. Delhi University’s Department of Social Work states that its MA programme accepts a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in any discipline under the described 10+2+3 pattern; it also lists some other qualifications and tells applicants to consult the latest postgraduate brochure for the minimum qualifying percentage. NEHU’s Tura department describes eligibility as a bachelor’s degree across Arts, Science, Commerce, Management, Law and other fields. These are specific institutional examples, not interchangeable rules for all MSW or MA Social Work courses. DU Department of Social Work, NEHU Department of Social Work
Other universities may require a particular qualification, an equivalent degree, a minimum aggregate, specified subjects or additional selection criteria. Read the official eligibility section for the exact programme and intake. Verify how the university calculates marks: all semesters or only a final examination, aggregate or major subject, conversion from CGPA, and treatment of backlogs can matter. If your degree is from another country or has a different structure, confirm equivalence with the admitting university before the application deadline.
Marks and category rules
Do not rely on an old brochure, coaching page or previous-year cutoff. The current prospectus or admission notice should specify the minimum qualifying marks, category relaxations if applicable, documents needed to claim them and the authority that issues valid certificates. A minimum eligibility threshold is not necessarily the score needed to receive an offer. Where seats are limited, actual selection may depend on entrance performance, academic record, interview or other criteria. The institution’s current selection notice governs.
When a page says “graduate in any discipline,” that phrase does not automatically waive minimum marks, equivalence, document verification or other conditions. Ask whether the applicant must have completed the degree by the application date, by counselling, or by final enrolment. Some programmes allow final-year students to apply provisionally, but the candidate may still need to submit proof of graduation and required marks by a specified date.
Entrance tests and interviews
MSW admission processes are not uniform. A university may use its own entrance examination, an interview, group discussion, merit based on qualifying results or a combination. SNDT Women’s University describes an entrance process involving a written test, group discussion and personal interview for its programme. Delhi University directs applicants to its current postgraduate admission process and brochure. These examples show why an applicant should check the live admission portal and current-year notice rather than assume a common exam is required everywhere. SNDT MSW, DU Department of Social Work
An entrance route may assess general awareness, social issues, reasoning, communication or subject knowledge, but the format must come from the official notice. Do not treat an unofficial sample paper as the current test syllabus. For an interview or group discussion, read the institution’s stated selection stages, reporting instructions and document requirements. A published historical process may have changed for a new intake.
Documents and equivalence
Prepare the documents named by the university, which commonly may include identity and photographs, degree or provisional certificate, semester mark sheets, category or disability certificates where relevant, transfer or migration documents, and proof of any required experience. This is a planning list, not a universal checklist. Confirm file format, self-attestation, originals needed at verification, and how name differences are resolved. Candidates awaiting final results should obtain written confirmation of provisional eligibility and the latest date for producing final results.
For foreign or non-standard qualifications, ask the university which equivalence or recognition documents are accepted. Do not assume an employer’s recognition or another university’s decision automatically satisfies the admission office. Keep copies of application acknowledgements and submitted records; eligibility is subject to verification.
Regular and ODL routes
Eligibility for a regular programme does not establish eligibility for an ODL or online version. Check the programme page for the exact mode and admission cycle, including any work experience, study-centre or practical component requirements. UGC’s guidance says students should verify recognition for the exact academic session because recognition in an earlier session does not establish recognition in the next session. IGNOU’s MSW page describes graduates from a recognised university as its learner group and presents an ODL programme with practical components; those rules are IGNOU-specific. UGC FAQ, IGNOU MSW
Before paying, verify the awarding university, programme title, mode and admission session directly on official university and UGC-DEB pages. Ask how fieldwork and supervision are organised in the chosen mode. The phrase “distance MSW” alone is not evidence that a specific course is currently recognised or that its practical requirements fit your circumstances.
A quick eligibility check
Use this sequence: identify the exact awarding institution and programme; open its current admission notice; confirm your bachelor’s qualification and equivalence; check aggregate calculation and category rules; note any entrance, interview or group discussion; confirm the final-year result deadline; and verify all required documents. If the programme has a specialisation, check whether you qualify for the degree first and whether the specialisation has a separate selection step. Keep a copy of the official notice that applies to your intake.
A bachelor’s degree in social work is not necessarily required, and a related undergraduate subject does not necessarily guarantee preference. Neither conclusion should be assumed without the published rules. If the notice is unclear, request a written response from the university admissions office before relying on an interpretation. Eligibility is an institution-specific administrative decision, not a national promise attached to the MSW label.
