There is no single national MSW fee. The amount depends on the university, campus, regular or self-financed seat, delivery mode, academic year and student category. A programme page may show a semester amount, an annual estimate or tuition alone. Before comparing options, find the current official fee schedule for the exact intake and calculate the full expected cost across the period of study.
Build a like-for-like budget
Start by recording what each published figure covers: tuition, admission charges, registration, examination, laboratory or computer charges, library, field practicum, placement, dissertation, student welfare, refundable deposits, hostel and transport. Note whether the amount is per semester, per year or for the whole programme. Convert only when the schedule makes the billing period clear. Do not multiply an annual figure by a nominal number of years if the university may revise charges or use a different semester plan.
Also budget for costs that may not appear in the fee table. Field learning can require travel to agencies or communities, meals during placement, clothing or equipment, printing and documentation, internet access, books and accommodation. Ask the department whether placements are arranged near campus, whether students pay local travel, whether there are block placements during vacations, and whether any stipend or reimbursement is available. Do not assume an internship is paid unless an official policy or placement agreement says so.
Read each institution’s unit carefully
NEHU Tura’s department page gives an amount of ₹40,000 per semester for its named full-time MSW programme. That is a university-specific published figure, and applicants should confirm it against the current admission notice and fee schedule before budgeting. IGNOU’s MSW ODL page publishes a full-programme fee and notes that examination fees are not included and may be set separately. These two examples cannot be compared by placing their headline figures side by side without accounting for delivery mode, included charges, study support and practical requirements. SNDT Women’s University’s programme page publishes approximate annual amounts for two years and also identifies the on-campus mode. It states the programme’s structure and placement requirements on the same page, which helps a student connect tuition with the time and travel commitment. Treat published fees as dated institutional information: the page or prospectus may need confirmation for the intake you plan to join. SNDT programme page
Estimate total cost without inventing certainty
For a campus programme, add the official tuition and mandatory charges for every term, then add a separate estimate for living and placement expenses. Use the university’s current hostel and mess rates if available. If the fee schedule lists a refundable deposit, keep it separate from the cost you expect to spend. If it lists “approximate” charges, record the date and ask whether they can change after enrolment.
For an ODL programme, tuition may be lower than campus study, but this is not enough to decide affordability. Include examination charges, study-centre travel, practical placement travel, internet and printed materials, and any time away from paid work. An ODL route may also have different maximum completion periods and practical arrangements. Verify the official programme guide before treating it as a low-cost substitute for a regular course.
If a university offers both aided and self-financed seats, compare the exact seat category and its terms. Check whether scholarships, fee waivers or instalments are available, who qualifies, whether they continue each year and what academic conditions apply. Confirm whether a seat-acceptance payment is adjusted against tuition or refundable if you withdraw. Save the official notice and receipt for each payment.
Ask about costs tied to fieldwork
Field education is a significant practical component in many MSW programmes. Ask whether the department assigns agencies, whether students can request a location, how often they travel, what supervision meetings require, and whether block placements create accommodation costs. Request the fieldwork handbook or written instructions before joining if this information is not on the programme page. A programme with a low tuition figure may still have meaningful transport or living costs; a higher tuition figure may include facilities that another course bills separately.
The Kerala University 2024 syllabus, for example, describes concurrent practicum, block field practicum and dissertation work. Its precise pattern is not a cost schedule, but it signals why students should ask how these requirements affect time, transport and research expenses. Do not treat this single curriculum as the cost structure for other universities. University of Kerala MSW Syllabus 2024
Verify before accepting an offer
Download the current prospectus and detailed fee notice from the official university site. Confirm the campus, mode, batch, category, semester and due dates. Ask whether examination and fieldwork charges are separate, whether fees may rise, and what refund policy applies. If the programme is delivered through ODL or online mode, check UGC-DEB recognition for the exact programme and admission session; UGC states that session recognition does not carry forward automatically. A careful comparison will produce a range of personal costs rather than one unsupported national average. Keep tuition, mandatory university charges, living expenses and fieldwork costs as separate lines. This makes it easier to compare campuses and delivery modes without confusing fee units or treating an old institutional figure as current for every applicant.
