M.Tech eligibility: verify the named programme and route
There is no single eligibility sentence that safely covers every M.Tech programme. The qualifying degree, branch, marks or CGPA threshold, accepted entrance paper, score year and category rules are set by the institution and sometimes differ among departments, specialisations and admission categories. Start with the exact programme and intake, then use its official prospectus and the current admission portal mapping. A generic course page can explain what to check, but it cannot confirm an individual's eligibility.
Check the qualifying degree
First identify the required degree type and discipline. Many engineering M.Tech programmes accept a relevant B.E. or B.Tech, but the accepted branches and equivalence conditions vary. Some programmes accept a master's degree in a related science or interdisciplinary field. IIT Delhi's general postgraduate description gives a broad example: for its M.Tech programmes it refers to an appropriate engineering or technology bachelor's degree of at least four years, or a master's degree in an appropriate discipline. That is IIT Delhi's general description, not a national rule; department-specific requirements remain controlling. (IIT Delhi postgraduate programmes)
Interdisciplinary options can accept less obvious backgrounds, but only under named conditions. IIT Delhi's Biomedical Engineering M.Tech page lists engineering and technology qualifications along with certain life-science and medical backgrounds, then distinguishes entrance criteria by prior discipline. Its list cannot be transferred to another biomedical programme or another institution. If a degree title is not named, do not assume that a similar-sounding course is accepted. Compare the transcript, required subjects and equivalence language, then ask the department for written clarification if needed. (IIT Delhi Biomedical Engineering M.Tech)
Match the entrance examination and paper
For CCMT 2026, the central counselling platform covered programmes at NITs, IIEST Shibpur and some IIITs and CFTIs using GATE scores from 2024, 2025 or 2026. This scope belongs to the 2026 cycle. The portal provides a mapping of institute, department and programme against GATE paper and qualifying degree, plus a separate list of special eligibility and restrictions. A candidate must match the exact programme row rather than rely on a general statement that CCMT accepts GATE. (CCMT 2026 about page; CCMT 2026 mappings)
Even a valid GATE score does not itself establish eligibility for every M.Tech. The programme may specify an accepted paper, score validity window, qualifying branch, minimum marks or additional condition. Read the mapping and the current brochure together. If the portal filters choices after you enter your profile, verify the rules against the official documents before treating the result as final. Admission remains subject to document checks and institute verification.
Check marks, categories and candidate status
Read the threshold precisely: percentage or CGPA, whether it is calculated across all semesters, the grading conversion rule, and any category or disability relaxation. Confirm whether candidates in the final year may apply and what proof they must submit by admission. A relaxation applicable to one category or programme should not be generalized to all applicants. This research did not establish one course-wide threshold for M.Tech, so no universal percentage is stated here.
Also distinguish eligibility to apply from selection. A minimum marks condition may let an applicant enter a process, while GATE rank, counselling choices, seat availability, written tests, interviews or department-level merit determine selection. Meeting a qualifying degree condition does not guarantee a seat. Conversely, a strong test score cannot repair an unmet mandatory degree or subject requirement unless the official rules explicitly permit an equivalent route.
Routes beyond regular CCMT seats
Admission category changes the conditions. NITK Surathkal describes regular admissions through CCMT for candidates with valid GATE scores and also lists self-financed, QIP and sponsored routes. Its sponsored category requires sponsorship and relevant work experience, while QIP is for eligible sponsored faculty. These are NITK-specific categories and requirements; other institutes may use different structures. Check whether an applicant's employment status, release from duties or employer certificate is required. (NITK M.Tech)
NITK's 2026-27 self-financed full-time bulletin illustrates a separate selection route. It sets a minimum aggregate CGPA/marks condition and describes a written aptitude test plus technical interview for that category. These conditions and dates apply to NITK's 2026-27 self-financed admissions, not to every institute or the central CCMT route. An applicant should verify which document governs the chosen seat type and whether an institute has issued a later amendment. (NITK 2026 self-financed bulletin)
A practical eligibility audit
Create one row for each programme rather than one row for each college. Record the programme title and specialisation, campus, intake year, admission category, accepted qualifying degrees and branches, required subjects, minimum marks, accepted exam paper and score years. Add final-year proof requirements, category documents, work experience or sponsorship, written test and interview steps, and the official source date. This prevents rules for a regular seat from being accidentally applied to a sponsored or self-financed seat.
Use the current official mapping and brochure. The CCMT site lists programme-to-paper and qualifying-degree mapping and separate special restrictions. For IIT or institute-specific routes, locate the department prospectus and the current admission notice. If the central portal and a departmental notice appear inconsistent, do not select the more convenient rule by assumption. Contact the admissions office with the exact programme code and your degree details and ask which version controls.
Finally, verify practical eligibility before paying an application fee. Check whether your undergraduate degree is recognized, whether your branch is accepted, how your institution calculates CGPA conversion, and whether an exam score remains valid for the cycle. Save the relevant PDF or webpage, not only a search snippet. Eligibility rules can change between intakes, and the 2026 examples above do not establish the requirements for a later cycle.
