GATE is a computer-based examination used by participating institutes and some public-sector employers to assess subject knowledge across engineering, technology, science, architecture, commerce, arts and humanities. A candidate’s first decision is whether a particular GATE paper is accepted by the programme or employer they are targeting, and whether they separately meet that destination’s eligibility rules. A qualifying score may support an application; it does not itself secure admission, scholarship or employment. IIT Madras is the organising institute for GATE 2027. The official GATE 2027 website is the controlling source for the current cycle.
GATE 2027 offers 30 test papers. It is an English-language computer-based test with multiple-choice, multiple-select and numerical-answer questions. Each paper carries 100 marks, with a common 15-mark General Aptitude section and 85 marks for subject content. The three-hour paper contains 65 questions. In most engineering papers, the subject portion includes Engineering Mathematics; other papers have their own section structures and mark distributions. Wrong MCQ answers lose one-third of a mark for a one-mark question or two-thirds for a two-mark question. MSQ and NAT answers do not attract negative marks, but MSQs have no partial credit. The exact distribution is on the official 2027 pattern page.
The examination is not one common paper followed by a branch preference. Candidates select a paper code, and each paper has a distinct syllabus. GATE 2027 adds Robotics and Automation (RA), revises the syllabi, and changes selected XE, XH and XL section codes. An old section code may therefore refer to something different in the new cycle. Open the 2027 paper list and syllabus and use the PDF for the paper you selected. Previous-year notes can help with fundamentals, but they are not a substitute for the current syllabus.
A candidate may appear in one paper or up to two, but only from the combinations permitted by IIT Madras. The second paper is added to the same application. An academically related paper pair is not automatically authorised, and choosing two papers increases both the fee and the preparation workload. Before deciding, compare the published pairings with the paper requirements of your target programmes. The admitting institute determines which papers it accepts for each programme; GATE does not give personalised paper recommendations.
For GATE 2027, a student currently in the third or a higher year of an undergraduate degree can appear, as can a person who has completed a government-approved degree in engineering, technology, architecture, science, commerce, arts or humanities. The criteria also cover overseas degrees: candidates must be in the third or a higher year, or have completed a bachelor’s degree of at least three years in the listed broad disciplines. There is no age limit and the official FAQ says there is no limit on attempts. Professional-society qualifications need an additional recognition check: the relevant examination must be approved as equivalent to the specified degree by the authorities named on the official page. See GATE 2027 eligibility for the complete table and notes.
Exam eligibility and admission eligibility are separate. The fact that a candidate can sit GATE does not mean every institute will accept that candidate’s degree or paper for every postgraduate programme. Some institutions set programme-specific degree backgrounds, minimum marks, subject prerequisites, interviews or written assessments. Candidates with a three-year B.A., B.Com. or B.Sc. should check the rules of each intended programme rather than infer that examination eligibility guarantees an engineering master’s seat. Do this check before committing preparation time to a paper that may not serve the intended admission route.
GATE 2027 examination centres are in India only. Foreign nationals and Indian citizens living abroad may apply, but must select an Indian city and arrange their own travel. Indian nationals register through DigiLocker. The site recommends a verified account; candidates using an unverified account may face additional scrutiny and ID checks. Keep access to the same DigiLocker account because IIT Madras says future communications will be made with reference to the account used for the application.
The application portal opened on 2 September 2026. The regular deadline was extended to 5 October, the late-fee deadline to 12 October, and a special late-fee window ran from 10:30 am on 15 October to 10:29 am on 16 October. Registration is now closed. At the time checked, the defect-rectification window for applications under scrutiny was open through 31 October 2026. This is for candidates asked to correct a defect, not a general reopening. The official dates and notifications pages show the revised entries; all dates may change.
The city-allotment notification is scheduled for 4 January 2027. The admit-card download date is TBA. The examination dates are 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027, and results are scheduled for 19 March 2027. These six exam dates apply across the paper schedule, not to each candidate individually. The paper, session and centre assigned to an applicant should be checked against the detailed schedule and admit card when issued. Do not plan travel around an assumed shift or treat a date on the calendar as immutable.
A valid GATE score may be used to apply to master’s and direct doctoral programmes in relevant fields, and to doctoral programmes at institutions supported by the Ministry of Education and other government agencies. The official opportunities page describes possible financial assistance for eligible programmes and notes that some public-sector undertakings use GATE scores in recruitment. “Possible” matters: the institute, scholarship authority or employer decides eligibility and selection. Some use GATE scores as one part of selection; others add academic records, interviews or written assessments. Employers may publish their own paper-specific notices. A GATE qualification is not an admission letter or job offer.
GATE scores are valid for three years from the result announcement under the official cycle material. That window does not override a year’s programme eligibility, a separate application deadline, a paper mapping or a recruitment notice. As a dated example, CCMT 2026 accepted scores from 2024, 2025 and 2026 for its own admission cycle. The score-year range for CCMT 2027 must be checked when its rules are published; the 2026 rule cannot be projected forward.
Start with the current syllabus, then confirm the paper is accepted by the programmes you want. Check GATE eligibility and the destination institute’s admission rules separately. Use the published pattern to plan practice and use past papers as diagnostics, not as a promise of future topic distribution. If you already submitted an application, monitor its scrutiny status and complete any requested correction before 31 October. Later, check the official notice for city allotment, admit-card release and the final session schedule. Older GATE pages should always be read with their year attached.
