IELTS dates are rolling, not an annual exam calendar
IELTS does not use one national examination day or a single annual registration window. Candidates select an appointment by city, test centre, date and offered delivery format. The practical question is “which appointment is available for my location and required test type?” rather than “what is this year’s IELTS exam date?” Availability differs by city, venue, test type and seat inventory; Speaking may be scheduled separately. A date visible in a live booking is operational. An old calendar or third-party list cannot reserve a seat or prove it remains available. IELTS booking guidance directs candidates to the booking interface to find dates.
In India, IDP manages IELTS testing. British Council India says it no longer delivers the exam, although it still provides preparation resources. Use the IDP India portal to search by city and select the exact test. Its direct booking page was inaccessible in this research, so this article does not reproduce a live slot table. Search results may show dates in a month but do not establish that a particular city or format has a place today. Open the booking flow and confirm the appointment before making travel or application plans. British Council India FAQ identifies IDP as the test-delivery partner.
The score deadline and test date are separate. Work backwards from the programme or visa deadline: allow time for the appointment, result release, score sharing and recipient processing. IELTS says computer results are usually available within 1–2 days, while its current delivery page gives a 1–5-day window; Writing on Paper may take up to five days and IELTS Online usually takes six to eight. Plan using the broader mode-specific estimate and leave a buffer. Checks can delay an individual result. Confirm the current estimate and recipient deadline before choosing the slot. IELTS result timing.
If an application deadline is close, ask whether the institution accepts a pending result or permits a later upload. Do not assume it will. A test provider’s estimated release date is not a guarantee that the destination will process the score that day. Keep four dates in your planning note: confirmed appointment, expected score window, last date to share the result and a contingency date if the appointment moves.
Test-format availability changes by market
IELTS announced in March 2026 that paper-based testing would be phased out from mid-2026, with timing varying by market. Computer delivery continues, and selected markets may offer Writing on Paper as a handwritten Writing component within a computer-delivered test. This is not the same as the older full paper-based session. IELTS says the skills assessed and interpretation of scores do not change. In India, IDP search results described Writing on Paper from 1 September 2026; the direct page could not be opened, and the indexed fee page still displayed stale paper labels. Do not infer current availability from an old calendar or fee page. Inspect the live booking choices for your city and intended date. IELTS delivery update.
IELTS Online is a separate option. It is Academic-only, offered in participating locations, and the receiving organisation decides whether it accepts online scores. It is not interchangeable with a test-centre computer appointment just because both use the Academic test. For UK visa purposes, follow the named Secure English Language Test route: IELTS states that UKVI SELT is fully digital and at an official centre. A home-based online test should not be assumed to meet that requirement. Ways to take IELTS.
Speaking can have its own appointment. Selecting a date for the other components does not always mean that every part will occur in one continuous block. The confirmation email and candidate account are the practical records for time, venue and instructions. Read them promptly and contact the provider if the Speaking time conflicts with travel or another commitment.
A reliable booking sequence
First, identify the purpose: a particular university programme, professional registration, migration application or UK visa route. Second, copy the required test type and score conditions. Third, compare available cities and modes in the current provider interface. Fourth, choose a date early enough to meet the recipient deadline even if a result is delayed. Fifth, complete payment, save the confirmation and check the Speaking schedule, ID rules and centre instructions.
If applying to more than one institution, make a row for each destination. A date convenient for one application may be too late for another, and the earliest slot may be for the wrong version. Recheck live appointment details before paying; third-party calendars and cached search results can be outdated. There is no need to wait for a “2027 IELTS exam date” announcement: appointments are bookable on a rolling basis. The useful question is whether the selected city and test type currently have a confirmed seat. If the booking interface is unclear about a mode, contact the test provider before committing.
