Begin with the destination's requirement
Preparation should start with the exact university programme, visa route, professional registration or employer requirement, not a band target copied from a coaching post. Record the named test version, overall minimum, component floors, accepted delivery mode and score deadline. Then take an official timed sample in that version. The first attempt is diagnostic: it shows whether the main gap lies in comprehension, timing, task response, vocabulary, grammar or speaking fluency. IELTS provides separate Academic, General Training and UKVI Life Skills sample resources. Official sample questions.
Academic and General Training both assess Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, but their Reading and Writing tasks differ. Listening and Speaking are shared. Academic is intended for higher education and professional registration; General Training is used for migration, training and below-degree study. Use material from the version you need. A high mock score in one module is not proof of readiness for the other. Academic structure · General Training structure.
IELTS Academic lasts 2 hours 45 minutes, with approximately 30 minutes for Listening, 60 for Reading, 60 for Writing and 11–14 for Speaking. Practise under these time conditions and the delivery mode you expect to book. A timed sample cannot guarantee the live band, but it can show where time is being lost.
Turn practice into an error-correction loop
For Listening, practise following the recording without pausing. Preview the questions where the format permits, track changes in speaker intent and enter responses accurately. Afterward, label each error: missed signpost, number or name confusion, missed correction, spelling or losing attention while answering a previous item. The next practice should address that error rather than simply replay the full audio.
For Reading, mark the exact sentence that supports each answer and explain why a plausible distractor is wrong. Look for paraphrases and relationships between ideas, not only repeated keywords. If the hour runs out, record which task type consumed time and set a pacing checkpoint for the next attempt. Academic and General Training use different reading material, so keep the practice set aligned to the intended test.
For Writing, the IELTS criteria include task achievement or response, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, and grammatical range and accuracy. Task 2 carries more weight than Task 1. Before drafting, identify every part of the question and plan the response. Organise paragraphs around clear points, keep examples relevant, and reserve time to check whether the task was answered. A longer response is not automatically stronger if it misses the prompt. Compare drafts with official descriptors and select one concrete revision goal. IELTS scoring details.
For Speaking, practise a direct answer followed by a reason or example. Record a response to a fresh prompt and listen for unclear pronunciation, repeated words, unfinished ideas or an answer that wanders. IELTS assesses fluency and coherence, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. The goal is intelligible, relevant communication, not copying a particular accent or memorising a script that may not fit the question.
Build a routine you can maintain
A useful weekly plan mixes timed attempts with deliberate review. For instance, begin with one diagnostic across all skills; schedule focused sessions for the weakest two areas; complete a full practice in the middle; and use the final sessions to revisit recurring errors and rehearse the chosen test interface. This is a flexible study structure, not an official IELTS timetable or a promise that a fixed number of weeks will produce a certain score. Adjust the frequency to your current performance and the application deadline.
Keep an error log with four fields: skill and prompt, what went wrong, why the response missed the mark and the next practice action. For Writing, keep a first draft and a revised version side by side. For Reading, include the supporting passage line. For Speaking, record one clarity goal for the next attempt. A short log helps distinguish a repeated weakness from an isolated hard question. Stop recording details that do not change what you will practise next.
Use realistic conditions. If the current booking is computer-delivered, practise reading and entering answers on screen. IELTS partners announced a market-specific phaseout of full paper tests from mid-2026, with Writing on Paper available only in selected markets. India-specific format details should be checked in the live IDP portal because the provider page could not be directly opened during this research. An old paper sample may not match today’s booking interface. The skills assessed remain the same, but mode familiarity can prevent avoidable navigation errors. IELTS delivery update.
Use official materials and set a realistic target
Start with the official sample questions for the test version you need. The IELTS hub links Academic, General Training and UKVI Life Skills materials. Use the sample to understand prompt structure and response expectations, then review answers with the official key or descriptors where provided. Third-party mocks may add practice, but verify that their format matches the current test and do not treat an estimated band as an official result. IELTS practice questions.
Choose a target only after checking the receiving organisation’s rule. Some courses require an overall band plus skill floors; others accept an alternative test. There is no universal IELTS pass score. A coaching provider’s suggested buffer is a preparation choice, not an admissions requirement. If your score already meets the recipient’s condition, additional practice may be less valuable than finishing the application, arranging score delivery or checking the validity date.
Plan the test date backwards from the score deadline. The current IELTS pages give result estimates by delivery mode, but checks can take longer. Leave room for result sharing and recipient processing. If one component is short, confirm whether One Skill Retake is accepted and whether the provider’s current rules allow it for your booking before deciding. More practice, a retake and an alternative evidence route solve different problems; choose based on the actual gap.
