SAT application and registration: book, prepare and send scores
Register for the SAT only after checking whether the target college uses scores for the intended entry year. SAT Weekend students register through their own College Board account; SAT School Day students follow their school or district's process. After selecting a test date and available center, the student enters identifying information, uploads a required photo and completes payment. The admission ticket and test-day device setup come later, so registration is not the final readiness check.
Confirm the score policy first
For each college and course, record whether SAT is required, optional, recommended or not considered, and whether exceptions apply to the student's applicant group. Note whether the college accepts self-reported scores during review or expects an official College Board report by a deadline. Check whether the college wants one sitting or every sitting and whether it superscores. Some institutions require all scores, so do not use Score Choice based on a general assumption. A score-recipient code tells where a report can be routed; it does not establish the current admission policy of every department at that institution.
Set two calendar reminders: the application deadline and the official score-receipt deadline. Compare those dates with an available SAT Weekend appointment and the published student score-release date. A result showing in the student's account and the college receiving or processing it are separate events. If the college's policy is unclear, ask its admissions office before registering or sending scores.
Register as a Weekend candidate
Use the student's College Board account. The College Board registration guide says the student registers for themselves, chooses a test date and location, enters identifying information and uploads a photo that meets its requirements. Search more than one test center if the preferred location has no available seats. Verify the test date, city, center, accommodation status and payment amount before completing registration. The calendar gives regular and change/late-registration deadlines, but an open deadline does not guarantee an available seat at a specific center.
A candidate who needs a loaned device should request it at least 30 days before test day, according to the date page. Device readiness is separate from seat registration. Check that the chosen laptop or tablet meets the current Bluebook requirements, is charged and can complete the exam setup. If a College Board loan is needed, do not wait for the ordinary registration deadline.
SAT School Day is not booked the same way. Schools or districts manage the administration and communicate the date, registration, accommodation and score-reporting details. A student should not make a personal Weekend appointment to replace a scheduled School Day test without checking with the school. School Day score release dates can be grouped by answer-submission window and can differ from Weekend releases.
Fees, waivers and changes
For international test takers, College Board lists a USD 68 SAT registration fee plus a USD 43 international fee. This USD 111 amount is before any test-center surcharge or optional service. The fee page states its additional fee schedule through June 2027 and lists USD 38 for late registration, USD 34 to change a test center, USD 34 for cancellation by the change deadline and USD 44 for late cancellation. A USD 24 surcharge applies at some listed centers, not at every center. The page also lists USD 15 for additional score reports after the free-report conditions. Use the current account checkout and fee page to confirm the amount for the chosen location and service. No official INR equivalent was verified in this research; do not calculate one and label it as College Board's price.
Eligible students may use a fee waiver under College Board's rules. Check eligibility and the correct current code before payment. Fee-waiver coverage and score-send benefits can differ from the ordinary paid flow. If changing a test date, read the account instructions; the international fee page notes that changing a date requires cancellation and a new registration, while changing a center has its own fee. A seat may not remain available after cancellation.
Accommodations and identification
Students who need accommodations should start the College Board approval process early and submit whatever documentation is required. Accommodations must be approved before they are used. The process may involve a school or coordinator and can affect materials, timing and appointment planning. The student should use their approved instructions rather than relying on an ordinary registration confirmation to indicate that an accommodation has been granted.
College Board compares the admission ticket, photo ID and test-center roster. The name and other identifying details must match the applicable ID requirements; a discrepancy can prevent admission. Check the exact ID rules for the student's situation and update the account early if a record is wrong. The ticket alone is not enough to enter the center.
Bluebook setup and score sends
Download Bluebook on the device to be used. Between one and five days before the test, complete exam setup in the app to generate the admission ticket. Reopen Bluebook the morning of the exam and check messages. Also check My SAT, email and the center-closing page in case a location or schedule changed. Confirm the ticket's arrival time because the website's example schedule may differ.
During Weekend registration, students can designate up to four free score reports under the College Board rules. For Weekend tests, the free-report selection or changes are available through nine days after the test date. Those initial free sends include the test date's scores and do not provide the same Score Choice flexibility as sending already-scored tests later. After results are available, Score Choice lets students choose which whole SAT test dates to report, subject to each recipient's policy. It does not permit selecting Math from one test date and Reading and Writing from another as a single report. If a recipient requires all attempts, follow that instruction.
After test day, check the score report, choose the correct college and reporting route, and allow time for processing. The next action is the college's application process. SAT has no central counselling or seat-allocation step. Retain a record of the report order and verify its status through the College Board account or the college's application portal when available.
