Four distinct metro campuses
ASU describes its structure as “one university in many places,” with four distinctive campuses throughout metropolitan Phoenix and additional locations around Arizona, the country and the world. The four metro campuses are Tempe, Downtown Phoenix, Polytechnic and West Valley. Their academic strengths and student environments differ, so a campus name should be part of your programme comparison. Tempe is ASU’s largest campus and original home. Downtown Phoenix is urban and connected to professional, health and public-service settings; Polytechnic is in Mesa and emphasizes a separate campus community; West Valley is in Glendale. Check the campus page and Degree Search entry to confirm where the classes for your exact degree take place. University-wide enrollment or amenities do not mean every facility, course or student service is present on every campus.

Tempe: the largest campus and university center
ASU’s Tempe page describes a broad pedestrian campus with Palm Walk, Old Main, Mountain America Stadium, the ASU Art Museum, ASU Gammage and Hayden Butte, or “A” Mountain. It lists The College, the Rob Walton College of Global Futures and many schools with a Tempe presence, including Fulton Engineering, W. P. Carey, Herberger Institute and Barrett Honors College. The campus page reports more than 61,400 students in its description; ASU’s fall 2026 facts table gives a Tempe campus immersion count of 51,200. Those figures refer to differently scoped descriptions and should not be combined into a single census. A student can explore walking tours, live webcams and campus maps before arrival. Course locations and the current campus headcount should be verified in the official programme pages.

Getting around the Phoenix metro area
Tempe is linked to the wider metro area through public transit, including light rail, buses and campus shuttles. ASU’s campus page lists a 10.9-mile trip from Downtown Phoenix to Tempe, with approximate published travel times of 21 minutes by car, 30 minutes by campus shuttle and 49 minutes by light rail and bus. It lists longer journeys from Polytechnic and West Valley. These times are route examples rather than guarantees; service schedules and traffic change by day and time. If your course plan uses more than one campus, test the actual routes around your class schedule and budget for transit, parking or occasional rides. Do not choose a low-cost housing option based only on a map distance. A reliable commute can affect attendance, access to lab or studio sessions and participation in campus activities.

Housing, dining and choosing a neighborhood
ASU links each campus to housing options, dining plans, student clubs and recreation resources. International students should compare residence hall eligibility, application timing, contract terms, meal plans and move-in dates with off-campus rental options. A published cost-of-attendance room-and-board allowance is a budgeting estimate; it does not guarantee a room or represent a particular apartment. Before signing a lease, confirm the assigned campus and likely class schedule, transit connections, utilities, deposit, insurance and lease dates. Students arriving from abroad may value an on-campus option for orientation and access to services, while others may prefer a shared apartment or family arrangement. The right choice depends on commute, cost, support and programme requirements. Ask the housing office about first-year or international student processes and check the current housing portal for inventory.

Student life and services vary by location
Tempe offers prominent university landmarks, athletics, arts venues and access to central Phoenix employers. Across campuses, ASU provides student clubs and activities, fitness, libraries, health resources, safety services and career support, but the nearest office, hours and service model may differ by location. Career Services says its advising and job-search support is available across all four campuses. Explore organizations related to your academic interests and ask how to join if you start midyear. For international students, confirm where international welcome takes place and which office handles visa-related check-in. The International Student and Scholars Center’s instructions are separate from general campus orientation. If you plan to attend an event, lab, student job or research meeting at a different campus, allow travel time and verify access arrangements.

Make a campus choice that fits your degree
Compare ASU campuses by exact academic offering, not by the campus brand alone. Start with your degree page and verify location, available class sections, expected attendance pattern, labs or clinical placements, student services and housing options. Then examine transit and campus life. For Tempe, the scale of the student population and range of colleges may appeal to students seeking a large residential campus; a smaller or more specialized community at another site may be preferable for a different programme. ASU’s four-campus system offers variety, yet it also makes careful planning important. If the degree listing describes more than one location, confirm whether students move between campuses or have a choice. Recheck all of these details for your intended term because programmes and facilities can change.
