Start by separating scholarship from admission
ASU’s New American University (NAMU) award is a merit-based scholarship for eligible international students; admission to ASU is not itself a scholarship offer. The international scholarship page says eligible applicants are automatically considered when they apply, while the international admission cost page emphasizes that awards go to a limited number of qualified students. Automatic consideration therefore does not mean automatic funding. First-year and transfer students have separate award criteria and amounts, and the page is directed to international students who meet its status and study conditions. Graduate students should not assume the undergraduate NAMU table applies to them. Check the precise student category, admission term and eligible campus programme, then read the offer for its amount, duration and renewal requirements. Keep an unfunded budget until the scholarship appears as a confirmed award.

Published first-year award bands
ASU currently lists international first-year NAMU awards from USD 10,000 to USD 17,500, with the table grouping applicants by international GPA: 4.0+ maps to the President–International tier at USD 17,500; 3.81–3.99 to Provost at USD 15,500; 3.41–3.80 to Dean at USD 13,500; 3.11–3.40 to University at USD 12,000; and 3.01–3.10 to Academic Achievement at USD 10,000. These are the published award bands, not a promise that every applicant in a band will receive the award or that a home-country GPA will be converted in a particular way. ASU’s eligibility conditions include full-time on-campus study and self- or family-funding; a fully sponsored student is ineligible under the page’s stated rule. Check the current table and your admission letter for the actual award.

Transfer students have a different award table
The international scholarship page lists transfer awards separately. It shows amounts of USD 3,000 to USD 10,000 according to GPA and TOEFL combinations and states eligible transfer recipients can receive the award for four consecutive fall and spring semesters toward completion of their first undergraduate degree, provided renewal criteria are met. The transfer table is not interchangeable with the first-year GPA bands. Applicants should confirm how transfer GPA and English scores are assessed, which test version is accepted and whether they have enough credits to be classified as transfer students. The page also states full-time enrollment conditions; its table requires at least 12 credits and 9 in-person credits for undergraduates, and 9 credits with 6 in-person for graduate students, though scholarship availability for graduate applicants should be checked against the current eligibility language.

Renewal and funding status matter across the degree
A merit award only helps if the student can maintain its conditions. ASU’s page requires full-time on-campus enrollment and self- or family-funded status; a student who becomes fully sponsored may have the scholarship cancelled. The award page includes renewal requirements that applicants should review before assuming a multi-year total. Ask whether the renewal test uses cumulative ASU GPA, earned credits, continued enrollment or another standard, and what happens after a term away, a change in programme or a shift to online study. Include the award as a separate line in a multi-year budget rather than subtracting it from every year by default. If the published first-year amount is renewable, model the cost both with and without renewal so you can see whether the programme remains affordable if academic or eligibility conditions change.

Other possible funding routes
International students generally do not qualify for U.S. federal or state aid unless they are an eligible noncitizen, according to ASU’s international cost page. That does not mean all outside funding is unavailable. Students can research home-country government awards, employer sponsorship, private foundations, academic-department fellowships, and research or teaching assistantships for graduate study. Each opportunity has its own eligibility, application date, permitted-use terms and effect on other funding. Graduate assistantships are not a general university scholarship entitlement; contact the degree department to learn whether a position exists and how it is awarded. Students may also work on campus, but job availability and work authorization should be confirmed with ASU’s International Students and Scholars Center. Never build a budget around an unawarded assistantship or a part-time job that has not yet been secured.

A practical scholarship checklist
When applying, save the current international scholarship table and note the GPA band, English score, first-year or transfer classification, study location, credit load, in-person credits and funding status that apply to you. Submit a complete admission file by the date the scholarship office specifies; the graduate page currently mentions automatic consideration for eligible first-year and transfer applicants whose materials are submitted by April 1, but that statement should not be generalized to every future academic year. After an offer, verify the net amount, whether it is credited per semester or year, renewal minimums, maximum terms and treatment of leave or transfer. Compare the confirmed award with ASU’s official cost estimator for the programme and campus. Keep an alternative funding plan until the scholarship appears in your account and all conditions are understood.
