Boston University - Fees, Courses, Ranking & Admissions 2026

Boston University in context

Boston University (BU) is a private, not-for-profit university in Boston, Massachusetts. Its scale is useful to understand before comparing it with smaller US colleges: the university reports 38,093 students, including 18,253 undergraduates and 18,341 graduate and professional students, across 17 schools and colleges. These are institution-wide figures, not the size of a single programme or class. BU also reports more than 300 programmes of study and 170+ study-abroad programmes. Those numbers describe breadth, not guaranteed access to every major, campus or overseas placement. Check the school and programme page for the course you intend to pursue. The university’s main academic geography includes its Charles River and Medical campuses, with additional activity in Fenway; course location and student services can differ by school. BU’s official facts page reports an average class size of 30 and student-faculty ratio of 10:1, but these are institution-level summaries, not a promise about every lecture or department. Ask departments about class formats, advising and research access in your intended major.

Choosing a school and major

BU’s academic structure is school-based, so compare the actual degree and school rather than treating the university as one uniform programme. The admissions catalogue lists options across the College of Arts & Sciences, College of Communication, College of Engineering, College of Fine Arts, College of General Studies, Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences, Questrom School of Business, Sargent College, Wheelock College and other units. BU describes more than 300 programmes of study; the catalogue is the practical place to narrow that range by degree, major and school. An important first-year restriction is explicit: the School of Hospitality Administration does not accept first-year student applications. A student interested in hospitality should therefore verify the school’s alternate entry route and current transfer rules instead of assuming first-year admission is available. Some majors also have January-entry or transfer restrictions, identified on the programme list. The College of General Studies has a distinct two-year pathway before progression to a major. Compare course sequence, prerequisites, degree length, location and intake before choosing an application option; do not infer that a university-wide number applies to your school.

Applying as an international student

For first-year applicants, BU’s current international checklist names the Common Application, official secondary-school records, senior-year grades, a counsellor recommendation and school report, teacher evaluation, English-proficiency testing, documentation of financial support and a passport data page. InitialView or Vericant interviews are optional, and standardised tests are optional under the current policy. The checklist is for first-year international applicants; transfer and graduate applicants follow separate instructions. BU defines an international student for this page as someone who is not a US citizen or US permanent resident. Most international degree-seeking students need an F-1 student visa, though the university and immigration authorities determine the appropriate status. Organise documents early: school officials must send official transcripts, and records in another language must include both the original and a notarised English translation. For examination-based curricula, BU asks for predicted results as well as current senior-year grades. Use the application portal checklist to confirm that each item is received, because submitted documents and received documents are not always the same milestone.

Deadlines depend on entry term

BU Admissions lists first-year Early Decision and Regular Decision routes. The deadline page currently gives 2 November for Early Decision and 5 January for Regular Decision, with the relevant financial-aid forms due on the corresponding dates; the merit-scholarship deadline is 1 December. These are the dates shown on the live page at review time and must be checked against the entry cycle before use. Early Decision is binding, so apply only if BU is your first choice and you understand the commitment and financial implications. BU lists an enrolment deposit deadline of 1 May for Regular Decision, while Early Decision deposits are due in early to mid-January. International applicants should allow time for school transcripts, predicted examination results, English testing and financial documentation to arrive. A deadline is not proof that a particular major is open for that term: the major catalogue flags January restrictions for some programmes. Treat the admissions calendar as a dated operational notice, not a permanent rule, and recheck the admissions page and your applicant portal before submitting.

Academic and English preparation

BU reviews academic records in the context of the curriculum followed; the international applicant page does not publish one universal secondary-school percentage cutoff. Programme prerequisites can be more specific. Applicants to the College of Engineering need a year of calculus; BU identifies qualifying IB mathematics routes and says students in other international curricula need some calculus. Questrom applicants need either a year of calculus or a year of precalculus plus a year of AP Statistics, with specified IB mathematics routes also accepted. These requirements are school-scoped, so do not apply them to every major. BU currently asks applicants whose first language is not English to submit TOEFL iBT, IELTS or Duolingo English Test results. It says its most competitive DET applicants typically score 125–135 and notes that total and subscores are reviewed. The same page gives competitive TOEFL and IELTS guidance and explains that English evidence is distinct from optional standardised admission tests. Test policies may change by entry term; check the current first-year international page and the intended school’s requirements rather than relying on an older profile listing.

What the published cost figures mean

BU publishes different cost figures for different decisions. For most undergraduates in 2026–27, Financial Assistance lists annual tuition of $73,024 and fees of $1,570. Its resident cost-of-attendance estimate adds $1,000 for books and supplies, $20,740 for housing and food, and $2,085 for incidentals, for a stated total of $98,419. The commuter budget has a different housing and food treatment and totals $82,176. These are budgeting allowances, not a single bill; housing, meals and personal spending vary. Separately, the International Students and Scholars Office lists a 9-month 2026–27 international undergraduate estimate of $105,666 for I‑20 financial documentation. It includes tuition, university fees, required health insurance, room and board, books and incidentals, but the page explicitly says this is an estimate and does not reflect official tuition, fees or living expenses. Do not combine or substitute the two totals: they have different purposes and component assumptions. Specific schools may add fees, and optional summer study carries extra costs.

Living in Boston

Boston is a high-cost urban study destination, and housing choice materially changes a student’s budget. BU’s 2026–27 housing schedule lists a standard minimum double, triple or quad room at $13,170; pairing that room rate with the $7,570 Open Access dining plan produces the university’s $20,740 resident housing-and-food allowance. Other room types and dining plans cost different amounts, and apartment-style housing may not require a dining plan. These are BU charges for the stated academic year, not a complete estimate of off-campus rent or the cost of living in Boston. Before committing, compare room assignment, meal-plan rules, lease duration, transport to the relevant campus and what is included in the quoted price. The university has Charles River, Medical and Fenway locations, and commuting assumptions differ by programme. BU’s I‑20 estimate groups room and board together and includes a separate incidentals allowance; it should not be read as a detailed neighbourhood rent quote. Ask the housing office about eligibility, deadlines and cancellation terms for the year you will attend.

Scholarships and financial aid

International students should distinguish merit awards from need-based assistance. BU says first-year international applicants may apply for merit scholarships; its first-year scholarship page gives a 1 December application deadline for the entering class it describes. One named award, the Presidential Scholarship, is open to international students and was listed at half tuition annually for students entering Fall 2026. That amount and eligibility are specific to the stated entry class and can change. BU Financial Assistance says university need-based grants and scholarships are generally unavailable to international students, with exceptions for select partner organisations; international students also cannot use US federal aid. Do not budget on the assumption that a scholarship will cover the remaining cost. Review the award’s renewal conditions, application steps and interaction with other funding directly with BU, and obtain a written award calculation for your programme and year. Financial documentation for immigration is a separate requirement from scholarship consideration: an application for aid or an award does not itself establish that the university can issue immigration documents.

Career preparation and outcomes

BU’s Center for Career Development offers career services, employer connections and resources such as internships; students should check access and eligibility for a particular service or school. The 2025 First Destination Survey offers a useful but bounded view of undergraduate outcomes. BU collected information on 3,846 of 4,951 bachelor’s degree recipients, a 78% knowledge rate. Among the reported destinations, 61% were in full-time employment, 25% in graduate or professional school, 7% in military service, volunteer service or part-time employment, 1% were not seeking work or further study, and 5% were still seeking. The categories and denominator matter: the figures do not mean that 61% of every entering student will secure a job, nor do they isolate international graduates or a specific major. For salary, BU reports an unweighted mean of $74,956 from 580 respondents, not a guaranteed or programme-specific starting salary. The same survey reports internships for 72% of 918 respondents and at least one broader experiential-learning activity for 87% of that group. Ask your school about field-specific placements, work authorisation and the timing of recruiting.

Student visa and arrival steps

Admission and immigration are separate decisions. BU’s admitted-international process directs students to wait for the university’s immigration document, then pay the SEVIS I‑901 fee, complete the DS‑160, arrange the visa interview and follow the embassy or consulate’s instructions. The US Department of State says university study generally requires an F visa; an academic institution’s acceptance leads to SEVIS registration and Form I‑20 issuance. The I‑20 is not a visa and does not guarantee visa approval or entry. Keep your passport, admission and funding records, I‑20 and appointment documents consistent, and check the US embassy responsible for your place of application for local procedures. Do not book non-refundable travel solely on the basis of an admission offer. After arrival, follow BU’s International Students and Scholars Office check-in and reporting instructions, maintain the conditions of your immigration status, and consult the university before changing programmes, reducing course load or working. Immigration rules and appointment availability can change; use government and BU guidance for your own situation.

How to decide whether BU fits

A useful BU comparison starts with the intended school, not the university’s headline profile. Confirm that the exact major accepts your applicant type and entry term; then map prerequisites to your current curriculum and check whether the programme has a separate application or portfolio. Compare the full annual budget with your funding plan, keeping tuition, billed fees, housing, meals, insurance, travel and personal costs visible. For an international student, the I‑20 estimate and the financial-aid cost-of-attendance table answer different questions, so retain both with their labels. Ask the department about class formats, advising, internships and any school-specific charges. Evaluate the 2025 outcomes survey as a cohort snapshot with a 78% knowledge rate, not an employment promise. If studying abroad is important, BU reports 170+ programmes, but destinations, eligibility, costs and degree applicability depend on the specific opportunity. Before applying, check the current deadline, upload official records and translations, complete the English test requirement if applicable, and confirm that the chosen term is open for your major. After admission, compare the award letter and immigration document steps before making a financial commitment.
