TOEFL iBT can help document academic English proficiency for an institution or programme that accepts it. It is not a general university entrance examination: ETS does not set a passing score, and the receiving institution decides whether it accepts TOEFL iBT, which score it requires, whether it accepts Home Edition results, and whether MyBest scores count. Before booking, match the exact test type and score policy to your intended course and intake. The overview below reflects ETS material checked on 28 October 2026, including the revised format and score scale that took effect on 21 January 2026.
The TOEFL iBT measures English-language skills used in academic settings across Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing. Students generally take it to meet an English-language condition for an overseas or domestic programme, scholarship, professional pathway or another institution-specific purpose. The test reports language performance; it does not replace an academic entrance test, transcript review, prerequisite subjects, interview, portfolio or application form unless the receiving institution explicitly says otherwise.
There is no TOEFL Program pass/fail mark. An applicant may have a valid score yet miss a programme's English requirement, and a score above a published minimum does not guarantee admission. Institutions set their own overall and sometimes section-level minima. They can also specify which test delivery mode they accept, how recent the result must be, whether scores must arrive directly from ETS and whether they consider MyBest scores, which combine a candidate's best section scores across test dates. Confirm all of these for the programme and intake, rather than relying on a general university listing or an old 0-120 threshold.
TOEFL iBT is one test in the TOEFL family. Do not assume an institution's acceptance of TOEFL iBT also means it accepts TOEFL ITP, TOEFL Essentials, a practice result or a different ETS product. Read the institution's wording carefully and ask admissions staff if the test name, delivery mode or score report is unclear.
Since 21 January 2026, the TOEFL iBT has used a revised, adaptive format and new task types. ETS currently lists four sections. Reading includes Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life and Read an Academic Passage; Listening includes Listen and Choose a Response, a conversation, an announcement and an academic talk; Writing includes Build a Sentence, Write an Email and an Academic Discussion; Speaking includes Listen and Repeat and an Interview.
ETS lists approximate base counts and times of 50 Reading items in 30 minutes, 47 Listening items in 29 minutes, 12 Writing items in 23 minutes and 11 Speaking items in 8 minutes. It says to allow approximately two hours in total, excluding directions. These are not guarantees of a fixed form: ETS notes that item counts and test time can vary as the test adapts. Candidates should therefore practise the current task families and pacing, rather than treating an older three-section description or pre-2026 item count as current.
The current public delivery choices are a computer test at an authorized centre or TOEFL iBT Home Edition, taken on a computer at home under live human remote proctoring. Home Edition has environment and equipment conditions. A college may accept one mode and exclude another, so settle that question before choosing a slot. Test mode is a receiving-institution rule, not a candidate preference that automatically satisfies the programme.
For a test taken on or after 21 January 2026, the score report gives four section scores and an overall score on a 1-6 scale in half-point increments. The overall score is the average of the four section scores rounded to the nearest half band. For example, if the section average lies between two half bands, the reported overall is rounded to the nearest half point under ETS's rule.
During the two-year transition after January 2026, ETS also supplies a comparable overall 0-120 score, described as the midpoint of the corresponding total-score range. This helps readers whose institutions have not yet changed their posted requirements. It does not mean the 2026 test uses the old format or that a legacy 0-120 threshold can be interpreted without context. For an older result, preserve its test date and original scale; for a new result, report the 1-6 value and use the comparable total only when the institution still asks for it.
ETS says score reports are available in the test taker's account three days after the test date, with the expected date shown when the test ends. Scores are valid for two years from the test date. Receiving institutions may have their own application rules about submission and recency, so make sure the score remains valid when the programme evaluates it, not merely when you sit the test. Download a copy for your records and arrange official reporting in the format and by the date the institution requests.
TOEFL iBT is a rolling appointment test, not a single annual entrance examination with one national registration calendar. ETS describes authorized test centres as offering more than 170 test administrations per year. Home Edition is listed as available worldwide 24 hours a day on four days each week, with registration at least 24 hours before the appointment. These are broad availability descriptions, not a promise that a convenient seat is open in every city or on every date. Check the current ETS booking account for your location and preferred mode.
Work backward from the earliest deadline among the institutions on your list. ETS advises choosing a test date at least two to three months before that admissions deadline and registering four months before the desired test date. Treat this as planning advice: it allows time for score release, direct score delivery, a possible retake and application processing. The 2026-27 Information Bulletin separately states regular online registration closes seven full days before a test and express online registration closes two days before, but a late slot may not be available and express fees may apply. Do not wait until the final deadline merely because a booking window remains open.
The same bulletin says there is no overall limit on retakes, but a test taker may not test more than once in a three-day period. This is a minimum interval, not a sensible preparation plan for every candidate. Reserve time to review a diagnostic, practise weaker tasks, receive the result and confirm how the institution handles multiple scores.
ETS India says there is no age restriction to take TOEFL iBT. The content is at first-year university level. For a test-centre candidate aged 15 or younger, ETS suggests an accompanying parent or authorized adult aged 18 or older who completes a release form. This guidance is not a minimum age rule. It also does not mean a university will admit a candidate; academic entry and English-language requirements are decided separately by the institution.
Registration identity details matter. ETS warns that the name and date of birth in the account must exactly match the accepted test-day ID; a mismatch can prevent testing without a fee refund. ID rules depend on where the candidate tests and, in some cases, citizenship. Check the location-specific ID requirements before booking and again before test day. Candidates who need disability or health-related accommodations should submit a request early: the 2026-27 Bulletin says accommodations must be approved before registration and that review of complete paperwork takes approximately four to six weeks.
For Home Edition, check the computer, room and equipment rules before paying. A remote proctor may be unable to admit a candidate whose setup does not satisfy ETS requirements. For a test centre, verify the location and arrival instructions on the appointment confirmation. Booking confirmation is not the same as a university application or admission offer.
TOEFL iBT registration prices vary by country or location, and additional services can have separate charges. ETS India displayed a registration amount of ₹15,729 when its fee page was checked on 28 October 2026, alongside service fees. The page did not display an effective date, so treat that number as an access-date observation, not a guaranteed price for a future booking. Before paying, check the live ETS fee table for the test location, test mode and selected services; also review any exchange-rate or payment terms shown by the checkout page. The fee is for the test, not tuition or an institution's application charge.
ETS's public score guidance says up to four free official score reports may be selected until 10 p.m. on the test day. The 2026-27 Bulletin gives a different cutoff: 10 p.m. local test-centre time on the day before the test. Because these official sources conflict, do not rely on either time without checking the current ETS account or contacting TOEFL Services. Additional report fees vary by location. Confirm the institution's recipient details and whether it requires an official ETS report before using a free-recipient slot.
First, identify the exact degree, programme, campus and intake. Next, check the programme's current English-language policy: accepted test types, minimum overall and section scores, mode restrictions, MyBest policy, score age and direct-report requirement. Then select a test mode and location, review ID and equipment rules, and schedule early enough for scores to reach the institution. Use the current 2026 format in your study plan and preserve the score report's test date and scale. Finally, complete the separate university application and academic admissions steps.
This sequence prevents three common mistakes: booking a test version the programme does not accept, treating a test score as an admission offer, and comparing a post-January-2026 1-6 score with an old 0-120 threshold as if the reports were identical. The ETS destination search can help identify institutions to investigate, but it is not a substitute for the admissions page for a specific programme and intake.
Before registering, write down the programme's current requirement and source date. Confirm whether it accepts TOEFL iBT, your chosen centre or Home Edition mode, and the 2026 score scale or comparable total it expects. Check the required minimums in each section, score validity at application review, official score delivery, MyBest treatment and the final score-receipt deadline. Then check local appointment availability, the live location-specific fee, ID, accommodation lead time if relevant, and cancellation or rescheduling terms.
The 2026-27 ETS Bulletin is stated to apply from July 2026 through June 2027 and to be subject to change. The official score, registration and fee pages are also live resources. Recheck them at the point of booking. University requirements can change independently of ETS, so recheck those as well. There is no confirmed common 2027 TOEFL examination date or central counselling schedule to add to an applicant calendar.
TOEFL iBT is useful when an exact receiving programme recognizes the test and its score report meets that programme's conditions. Its value is therefore specific to the candidate's route. Confirm the accepting programme first, then choose a date and mode that produce a usable report in time.

For tests taken from 21 January 2026, ETS reports overall and section scores on a 1-6 scale in half-point increments. ETS also provides a comparable 0-120 overall scale during the two-year transition after the 2026 scale change; preserve the test date and scale when comparing scores. ETS states scores are valid for two years from the test date, while institutions can set their own score-age or transition requirements. There is no universal passing score; check the exact programme. Official ETS score guidance accessed 2026-10-28: https://www.ets.org/toefl/test-takers/ibt/scores/understand-scores.html
