Academic preparation depends on the intended school
CMU says each college or school has its own high-school course requirements. It identifies curriculum rigor, grades and work completed as major parts of its admission decision; for Fine Arts programmes, artistic performance is a main or significant factor. This means applicants should not rely on one university-wide subject checklist. The official requirements page sets different preparation by school. Engineering, Mellon College of Science and Tepper each list four years of English and mathematics, plus science subjects and foreign-language study. Dietrich lists four years of English, three years of mathematics, science and foreign language. School of Computer Science expects four years of English and mathematics, physics, two years of chemistry, biology or computer science, and foreign language. Fine Arts requirements also differ by school: Architecture, Design, Art, Drama and Music have different subject patterns and portfolio or audition expectations.
The academic requirements page helps candidates plan a transcript, not predict a decision. It describes required and preferred secondary coursework by school, while CMU separately evaluates grades and curriculum rigor. Applicants should check whether their school offers the listed subjects and how the transcript names them. If a subject is not available, explain the school context in the application and ask the admission office how to document that limitation; do not silently relabel a course as a prerequisite equivalent.
Map Indian subjects to the stated preparation carefully
For an Indian applicant, the useful question is how the actual board curriculum and subjects map to the school’s stated preparation, not whether a generic “equivalent” list appears online. CMU describes requirements in years of study and subject areas. Its engineering and computer science pages specify mathematics topics such as algebra, geometry, trigonometry, analytic geometry and pre-calculus, with calculus preferred or strongly encouraged. These terms should be compared with the student’s completed and planned courses. The published requirement page does not itself certify equivalence for every Indian board, combination or school transcript; ask Undergraduate Admission for guidance where course naming or sequence is unclear. High grades do not remove a listed preparation requirement, and completion of the listed coursework does not guarantee admission.
Some listed course patterns are specifically different. For School of Computer Science, CMU lists one year of physics and two years in Chemistry, Biology or Computer Science, alongside four years of mathematics and two years of foreign language. For Dietrich, it lists one year of science, preferring two or more, and three years of mathematics; its note distinguishes BA mathematics expectations from stronger encouragement for BS programmes. A student considering multiple schools should map the transcript against each separate column rather than combine requirements into a supposed common minimum.
International documentation and language evidence
International undergraduates follow essentially the same application timetable as applicants from US schools but also meet international requirements. For applicants whose native language is not English, CMU requires official proficiency results and lists accepted exams and score thresholds. It gives IELTS Academic a 7.5 minimum overall band and notes that the TOEFL threshold changed for exams taken on or after January 21, 2026. These language requirements are separate from subject prerequisites. Non-English secondary transcripts need an official translation, verified by a counsellor or school official. Students taking IB or GCE A-Level examinations should send expected results. Use the exact exam date, version and score report instructions; do not assume that a general English-medium schooling history substitutes for the stated test policy unless CMU confirms an exception.
AP and IB credit is assessed after the applicant sends official results. CMU says AP scores of four and five may receive advanced placement or credit, while IB Higher Level scores of six or seven may receive advanced standing or credit in various fields. The wording ‘may’ matters: the relevant dean evaluates credit, and the university provides school-specific tables for the scores and awards usually granted. This can affect planning after admission, but applicants should not assume it shortens the degree or replaces a required course until an official evaluation is issued.
Advanced placement and transfer are separate decisions
CMU may award advanced placement or credit for AP scores of four or five and may grant standing or credit for IB Higher Level scores of six or seven. The appropriate academic dean evaluates the submitted results, so a score does not automatically translate to a specific course waiver or shorter degree. Transfer applicants face another process: CMU says a student must complete at least one college semester by the application deadline, and transfer availability varies by school and space. Transfer applicants submit both college and high-school transcripts, course descriptions and a professor or advisor recommendation in place of a college counsellor recommendation. The admitted college evaluates courses for possible transfer credit, and transfer housing is not guaranteed. Applicants should compare first-year entry, credit evaluation and transfer pathways separately rather than assuming that prior Indian university study will map course-for-course.
Transfer applicants should also distinguish eligibility to apply from likelihood of admission. CMU describes transfer admission as limited and dependent on space in the programme. A completed semester before the deadline is required; College of Fine Arts transfer applicants follow first-year deadlines, and external transfers cannot apply to BXA programmes. The receiving school evaluates potential transfer credit if an offer is made. Because housing is not guaranteed for transfers, academic eligibility and practical transition planning should be checked together.
