Determine the correct student visa route
A student pursuing a US degree normally needs the appropriate student status rather than a visitor visa. The Department of State distinguishes F visas for academic study from M visas for vocational study. After a SEVP-approved school accepts a student, it registers the record in SEVIS and issues Form I-20; the student then pays the SEVIS I-901 fee and applies for the visa. CMU’s Office of International Education (OIE) handles the university’s immigration-document process for most students. First-year undergraduates use the MyOIE Portal after admission; graduate processes and timelines may be set by the admitting department. Confirm that the offer, campus, programme start date and immigration record are correct before filing the visa application.
CMU Form I-20 and funding documents
CMU OIE says an I-20 is processed after it receives the completed new-student e-form, financial support documents, passport copy and the relevant admissions or academic-department data. Its stated goal is to process a complete package within six weeks, which is a processing goal rather than a guaranteed service time. Financial evidence must be in English or accompanied by a certified translation, dated no more than six months before submission, and show the account holder, account type and currency. CMU accepts bank statements, bank letters, approved or sanctioned loans, scholarship award letters, some investment values at half value and sponsor salary letters at half value. Future US employment, tax returns, retirement accounts and Chartered Accountant statements are listed as unacceptable categories.
Complete the federal visa application and interview
After receiving the I-20 and registering in SEVIS, use Form DS-160 and follow the instructions for the US Embassy or Consulate where you apply. The Department of State says the order and steps can vary by post; interviews are generally required, though limited exceptions exist. Prepare the valid passport, DS-160 confirmation, application-fee receipt, photo and signed I-20, along with evidence the officer requests about academic preparation, intent to depart after study and ability to pay education, living and travel costs. The current Department of State page lists a $185 application fee; a separate visa issuance fee may depend on nationality. Check official appointment and fee instructions at the time of application.
Respect the visa and arrival timing rules
For new F and M students, the Department of State states that visas may be issued up to 365 days before a course begins, but entry is not allowed more than 30 days before the programme start date. A visa does not guarantee admission at the port of entry. Avoid buying non-refundable travel before visa issuance, and coordinate arrival with CMU’s official housing move-in date and international orientation. CMU OIE recommends watching the Andrew email for status updates and says new international students must complete immigration registration and orientation after arrival. Keep passport, signed I-20, SEVIS and visa records together for travel, and check current carrier and border guidance.
After arrival, maintain status and check work permission
Students must follow the terms of their immigration status and the dates and conditions recorded in their documents. Contact OIE before changing a course load, taking a leave or accepting off-campus work. For F-1 students, CMU says CPT is job-specific, must relate to the major and requires OIE approval and a CPT I-20 before work begins; it cannot be granted retroactively. Optional Practical Training is a separate process with eligibility and filing rules. Department of State guidance says new students can apply for the F/M visa only after I-20 and SEVIS steps, but visa issuance, entry and employment authorisation are distinct decisions. This guide is general process information, not an individual immigration determination; use CMU OIE and current government instructions for the student’s own case.
Organize a reliable application timeline
Work backwards from the academic programme start date, but leave room for each decision-maker’s processing time. Confirm the admission record and required student category with the university; complete the OIE document request with funding evidence that matches the current instructions; then check the I-20 for correct identity, school, programme and dates as soon as it arrives. Use the I-20 and SEVIS information to complete the federal application, and consult the specific embassy or consulate for its appointment procedure and document checklist. CMU’s six-week processing goal applies to a complete document package and should not be treated as a promise that every step, including an interview appointment, will finish within that period.
Keep a simple record of submission dates, confirmations and follow-up requests. If a funding source, passport detail, programme or travel date changes, ask OIE whether the I-20 needs correction before proceeding. Follow the relevant consular instructions about originals, translations and supporting evidence, and use official government pages for current fees, forms and appointment guidance. Visa issuance, permission to enter at the border and authorization to work are separate stages; a document that resolves one stage does not guarantee the next. Avoid relying on unofficial social-media timelines or another student’s experience as a substitute for the current instructions that apply to your post and case.
After arrival, keep copies of immigration documents and use CMU OIE as the point of contact for status questions. Before any employment, internship, programme change or travel that could affect status, verify the applicable requirements with OIE and the government authority responsible. This page describes a general sequence and dated rules cited above; the student’s own documents and current official guidance control.
