Columbia University Admissions 2026

Columbia is a university of distinct schools

Columbia University is a private research university in New York City, but the name alone does not specify a student’s academic home. Columbia College, the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science, the School of General Studies, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and the professional schools have separate degrees, admissions routes, curricula, financial-aid offices and career resources. The university’s 2026-27 Columbia College Bulletin is an authoritative source for College study, not a complete catalogue for every Columbia degree. A useful first step is to write down the precise school, programme, degree and intended entry term, then use pages maintained by that unit.

That distinction changes the questions an applicant should ask. Two schools may offer study in a similar field while awarding different degrees and setting different prerequisite or credit rules. Undergraduate, graduate and professional programmes also differ in research expectations, length, internship access and funding. Columbia’s career-center directory, for example, lists separate offices for many schools. The university is best understood as a collection of academic communities sharing a broader institutional identity, rather than one uniform admissions or student-service system.

Choose an undergraduate route that fits the degree

Columbia College is a liberal-arts undergraduate school whose BA requirements include a major and the Core Curriculum. The Core includes shared courses such as University Writing, Literature Humanities, Contemporary Civilization, Frontiers of Science, Art Humanities, Music Humanities and Global Core. The College’s official academic requirements page advises students to schedule several Core courses early, including University Writing, Frontiers of Science and Literature Humanities I and II during the first year, with Contemporary Civilization by the end of the sophomore year. That sequence matters when a student plans a major, language study, a semester abroad or a transfer-credit schedule.

Columbia Engineering is a separate undergraduate school with its own technical course structure and degree requirements. The School of General Studies is another distinct route with its own admissions and academic policies. Applicants should not treat these as interchangeable options or assume that the same programme is offered under identical terms in each unit. Compare degree names, required courses, credit loads and advising before selecting an application. For transfer applicants, Columbia College’s published BA rules require at least 124 points, with at least 60 taken at the College, plus applicable Core and major requirements; those rules do not automatically apply to another school.

Graduate and professional programmes require a narrower search

Columbia’s graduate and professional programmes sit in academic units such as GSAS, Engineering, SIPA, the Business School, Journalism, Public Health, Architecture, Planning and Preservation, Professional Studies and others. The precise degree, school and department determine prerequisites, application materials, programme length, course requirements, research access and whether part-time study is possible. A master’s in one school may be a tightly sequenced professional curriculum, while a degree in another school may emphasize research or a thesis. Doctoral study can involve coursework, examinations, teaching and dissertation milestones. Applicants should use the target department’s catalogue and handbook, not a general university summary, to plan their path.

The same school-level approach applies to financial support and career services. GSAS states that admitted students to its administered PhD programmes receive full university fellowships; it also says MA fellowships are not offered by GSAS and departmental scholarships are limited. Those examples show real variation, but they cannot be generalized to every graduate programme. Confirm the award in writing and review the school’s renewal and enrollment conditions before building a financing plan.

Build an application around the exact school and applicant category

Columbia applications are not governed by one universal checklist. First-year undergraduate, transfer, General Studies, graduate and professional applicants follow different routes. Within graduate admission, departments may ask for different prerequisite coursework, recommendations, essays, portfolios or research statements. Use the live page for the intended school and entry term to confirm the application platform, required documents, testing policy, English evidence and deadlines. The Columbia College Bulletin is an academic requirements source, not an admissions checklist. Do not copy dates or testing rules from an old viewbook or another school’s page.

For applicants educated outside the United States, document format and credential interpretation also matter. Ask the school how to submit official transcripts and translations, whether predicted results are accepted and when final results must arrive. If you have attended another university, disclose the full academic record and confirm whether you belong in the first-year or transfer pool. Graduate applicants should verify each programme’s prerequisites and whether funding consideration is part of the admission application. Columbia’s undergraduate admissions pages were not available during this research, so this overview does not claim current application deadlines, testing policy or English-score minimums.

Eligibility depends on programme, credential and prior study

There is no single public threshold that describes eligibility for every degree at Columbia. The responsible school determines which secondary-school qualifications, university degrees, prerequisite courses and supporting documents it accepts. Engineering preparation can differ from a liberal-arts application; professional degrees may require relevant experience, a portfolio, a licence or specific academic prerequisites. Graduate departments can set requirements beyond those of a central admissions office. Meeting a published minimum, where one exists, is not the same as receiving an offer. Applicants should check the exact degree page and ask the admissions office when an international credential or grading system is unclear.

Transfer eligibility and transfer credit are also separate questions. Columbia College’s current Bulletin describes a 124-point BA requirement and a minimum of 60 points completed at the College for transfer students, along with its Core and major rules. It outlines expected remaining semesters by entry standing. These are degree-completion rules for College transfer students, not a guarantee that any number of prior credits will transfer or a policy for all Columbia schools. Ask the receiving school for a formal evaluation before relying on prior coursework to shorten a degree.

Estimate costs using the correct school budget

Columbia tuition and living costs vary by school, programme, registration status and academic year. The official Tuition and Fees Tool asks students to choose a school, programme and term; Student Financial Services notes that tuition may await trustee approval. School pages separate direct charges such as tuition and fees from estimated indirect costs such as food, housing, books, transportation and personal expenses. A 2026-27 Graduate Engineering estimate, a GSAPP nine-month budget and a Climate School programme figure describe different populations and should not be combined into one Columbia-wide total. For the 2027-28 intake, treat the latest published 2026-27 amounts only as dated planning evidence until the responsible school releases updated figures.

Plan cash flow as well as annual cost. Columbia bills term charges at the start of each term, and its published 2026-27 schedule lists specific fall, spring and summer due dates while warning that these dates may change. Housing under an occupancy agreement can follow a monthly schedule. Separate billed tuition and fees from rent and other expenses paid outside the university account. Add travel, insurance not included in a quoted budget, deposits and personal contingencies, and ask the school how aid or an outside sponsorship changes the amount due.

Funding is not uniform across Columbia

Columbia’s international-student funding guidance says international students are not eligible for federal or state student aid, while institutional support may be available depending on the school. Applicants should contact the financial-aid office for their target degree to ask about grant, scholarship, fellowship, assistantship and loan eligibility. Private loans come from lenders, and terms depend on the borrower and lender; a university listing is not a loan guarantee. Graduate funding differs as well: GSAS has a defined full-fellowship policy for its admitted PhD students, while its FAQ says MA-level fellowship awards are not offered by GSAS and departmental support is limited. SIPA has programme-specific scholarships and assistantships with separate rules.

Read award terms carefully. Confirm duration, renewal standards, academic progress, work commitments, tax treatment and whether an award covers tuition, living costs or both. Ask whether outside funding can change a school scholarship or the cost-of-attendance calculation. For immigration paperwork, use the funding records and programme-specific budget ISSO requires; do not count an unawarded scholarship as guaranteed proof of funds. If financial circumstances change after enrollment, ask the school whether documented case-by-case review is available. Emergency hardship grants, where eligible, are limited support and should not be treated as a financing plan.

New York location means multiple campus settings

Columbia’s Public Safety office publishes maps for Morningside, Manhattanville and CUIMC, with links to other campus and access resources. The campus where an applicant studies affects commuting, housing and access to services. Morningside is associated with Columbia College and Engineering, while other academic units and research activity operate elsewhere. Check the programme’s address, course schedule and any clinical or fieldwork locations before choosing where to live. Columbia Public Safety publishes access updates, accessibility maps and transportation resources; some buildings require a university ID or approved visitor access.

The surrounding neighbourhood also affects a student’s routine. Estimate travel between campus, housing, libraries and internships at the times you expect to commute. Review current shuttle and public transit details rather than relying on an old map or fare guide. Students who need accessible routes should use the university’s accessibility maps and contact the relevant school about classroom and housing support. Admission does not itself guarantee campus housing; the responsible housing office sets eligibility, application dates and availability for each student group.

Career support and outcomes need programme-level context

Columbia’s career-center directory lists separate offices for many academic schools, including Columbia College, Engineering, GSAS, SIPA, Journalism, Public Health, Business and Professional Studies. Start with the center that serves your degree and ask about advising, internships, employer access, alumni support and career resources for international students. A university directory shows where offices are; it does not guarantee a particular job outcome. Students should compare career resources with degree curriculum, research access, practical work, professional licensing and the employment conditions of their intended field.

Published employment reports also have limited scope. A school report should be read with its graduating class, survey window, response coverage and outcome definitions attached. Any school-level figure remains specific to that degree and cohort, not a Columbia-wide placement rate or a guarantee for a future cohort. Before using a report, check its year, survey window, denominator, response rate, salary definitions and whether outcomes are separated by degree or international status. Work authorization, prior experience and location can influence an international graduate’s opportunities and should be considered separately.

International students should plan status and travel steps

After admission, Columbia’s International Students and Scholars Office provides guidance on F-1 and J-1 student status. ISSO issues an I-20 or DS-2019 after eligibility and financial documents are reviewed; the office’s instructions require admission to a full-time programme and funding evidence for the first academic year, plus a plan for additional study. The visa process then includes paying the SEVIS fee, completing the DS-160, scheduling an appointment, preparing records and following the relevant consulate’s directions. Processing times, fees, travel rules and government policy can change. Keep the programme name and funding source consistent across documents and verify the current checklist before submitting.

The visa itself is an entry document; student status is maintained by following immigration and university requirements. Before travel, employment, a leave, a reduced course load or a programme change, contact ISSO. The office explains that visa expiry while a student maintains status in the United States does not by itself end that status, while international travel generally requires valid re-entry documentation. No university can guarantee a consular decision. If you bring dependents, plan for their separate forms and additional funding evidence, and check their travel records alongside your own.

How to compare Columbia with another university

Compare like with like: the same academic level, subject, programme length, study mode and entry cohort. Place the degree requirements next to the other institution’s curriculum, then compare tuition and living costs from the correct school budget. Check whether scholarships are guaranteed, competitive or work-based; whether internships and research are available to your cohort; and whether career reports have comparable response rates and outcome definitions. A global institutional ranking can add context, but it cannot establish that a particular programme is a good academic, financial or professional match.

For Columbia, keep school and campus distinctions visible in your notes. A College BA, Engineering degree, GS pathway and graduate professional programme can have different course sequences, services, costs and career outcomes. Ask the admissions and financial-aid offices questions tied to the exact programme instead of relying on general university statements. Save dated copies of rules and budget pages, and revisit them when the next academic-year information is released. This makes it easier to notice when a published policy or amount has changed.

A practical decision checklist

Before applying, confirm the exact school, degree, applicant category and entry term; collect the current academic and admissions requirements; verify how your credential is evaluated; and map all required documents and deadlines from the responsible office. Before accepting an offer, compare the newest school-specific cost budget, aid decision, housing plan, campus location and programme course sequence. Ask who provides career services and what outcome data is available for the degree. If you need a visa, use ISSO’s current I-20 or DS-2019 and consulate guidance, allowing time for documents and appointments.

Columbia can be a strong fit for students seeking a degree in its specific academic environment, but fit depends on the school and programme—not only the university name. The evidence in this guide is drawn from current official pages and dated school examples; it does not promise admission, aid, housing, employment or visa approval. When 2027-28 rules or budgets are not yet published, use 2026-27 information as a labeled planning reference and verify the new cycle before making a financial or travel commitment.
