Harvard’s latest global ranking positions
Two major global ranking publishers place Harvard near the top of their 2027 editions, but they do not publish one shared score. QS lists Harvard at No. 5 in the QS World University Rankings 2027. Times Higher Education (THE) places it No. 6 in the World University Rankings 2027. These are publisher-specific positions for the university as a whole, not a rank for every school, department, undergraduate concentration or graduate programme. State the publisher and edition together: “Harvard, QS WUR 2027, No. 5” is precise; “Harvard is number five” is not.
The lists use distinct indicator sets, weightings and methodologies. Even when both draw on research and reputation signals, their tables are not interchangeable measures of teaching quality or student outcomes. The one-place difference between QS and THE is not a head-to-head result because each position is calculated within its own framework. Check a publisher’s current methodology and subject table when you are comparing a specific field.
Compare like with like across years
A useful year-on-year comparison holds the publisher and ranking family constant. In QS, Harvard was also No. 5 in the 2026 edition, so its 2027 position is unchanged on that list. In THE, Harvard was joint No. 5 in 2026 and No. 6 in 2027. Do not describe this as a general fall across rankings: the 2026 THE position was tied, and QS shows a different chronology. A rank number also hides score movement and methodology changes.
This corrects older saved descriptions that showed QS No. 4 or THE No. 4 as if current. The publisher profiles checked for this article support QS 2027 No. 5 and THE 2027 No. 6. If a newer edition appears, replace these only after checking the publisher’s official Harvard profile and edition label. Keep older positions as dated history rather than allowing them to become undated current claims.
What a university-wide rank can and cannot tell you
A global table can orient a broad shortlist, but it does not tell you whether a specific Harvard degree is right for you. Harvard University includes Harvard College and 12 graduate and professional schools, each with its own admissions, teaching, funding and programme structure. A university-level position cannot establish that every programme has the same subject rank, employment outcome or admissions likelihood.
For a degree decision, move to a subject-specific ranking only when its subject definition matches the course you want. Then compare the school’s curriculum, faculty and research areas, tuition and aid, cohort outcomes where published, and any accreditation or licensing requirements. Rankings summarize selected indicators; your decision also depends on cost after aid, location, teaching format and fit with your preparation.
Verify a ranking before using it in a decision
Open the publisher’s live Harvard profile and confirm both the rank and the named edition. QS and THE update on different schedules and may show more than one year on the same page. Record the exact ranking title, publication edition and date checked. For a subject comparison, use the matching QS or THE subject list rather than carrying a World University Rankings position into a discipline-level statement.
A simple comparison table should keep publisher, ranking family, edition, position and tie notation in separate columns. Add a note on what that ranking does not measure for your decision. This prevents stale positions and mixed editions from being presented as one scorecard. Check Harvard’s official school directory too: it helps identify whether the programme belongs to the College or a graduate or professional school.
Use a ranking as one part of your shortlist
A practical shortlist records each university’s subject and programme fit beside the ranking entry. For Harvard, that means identifying which school awards the degree and whether the publisher’s subject category actually covers it. Compare the published curriculum, course access, advising, research opportunities and total cost after aid. If two publishers disagree, preserve both entries with their edition labels instead of averaging their positions. A school may also publish programme-specific outcomes that are more useful for your chosen path than a university-wide rank. The next step is to open the official programme page and confirm requirements, funding and location for your intended entry year.
