Review tuition feesHarvard University is a private research university in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Its academic community includes the undergraduate Harvard College, 12 graduate and professional schools, and the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study. That structure matters when you research admissions, costs or career outcomes: there is no single application process, price or employment profile that applies to every Harvard student.
Harvard’s history is long, but the useful starting point for an applicant is the degree-granting school. An undergraduate applicant applies to Harvard College and chooses an academic concentration after exploring the curriculum. Graduate applicants apply to a specific school and programme, such as a doctoral department at Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Harvard Business School, Harvard Law School or another professional school. Each sets its own prerequisites, deadlines, testing rules and funding arrangements. First identify the degree and school, then use that school’s current admissions and student-services pages rather than a general university page as the final authority.
Harvard’s Fact Book reported Fall 2025 degree-student enrollment of 6,675 at Harvard College and a unique University total of 24,317. The overall total counts students registered in more than one school once, so adding school-level figures may produce a larger sum. These are enrollment counts for a named term, not the size of a single incoming class.
Harvard College offers undergraduate liberal arts and sciences study; its fields are called concentrations. Graduate and professional schools award a wider range of academic and practice-oriented degrees. The school directory is the best way to find the unit responsible for a subject. Similar course names do not mean similar degree requirements: a College concentration, an academic master’s programme, a doctorate and a professional qualification can have different curricula, calendars, costs and outcomes.
For an applicant, a shortlisting table should include school, exact degree, campus or teaching location, normal duration and entry term. Then compare the curriculum and prerequisites on the programme page. This prevents the University’s large range of subjects from being mistaken for a single menu with a shared admissions standard.
Harvard College first-year admission and graduate or professional admission are separate processes. College applicants submit the Common Application or Coalition Application with Harvard-specific questions and supporting materials. The current first-year instructions list November 1 for Restrictive Early Action and January 1 for Regular Decision; counselors may send supporting records shortly afterward. Those dates are for the College application route and should be reconfirmed on the official page for the intended entry cycle. Transfer applicants follow a different process and deadline.
Graduate applicants apply directly to the school and degree they want. A PhD department may require academic records, recommendation letters, a statement of purpose and writing or research material. A professional school may add tests, work experience, interviews or other requirements. For example, GSAS and Harvard Business School publish different requirements and deadlines. Do not carry the College’s testing rules, application dates or admission statistics into graduate admissions.
Harvard College reported 47,893 applicants and 2,003 admitted students, a 4.2% rate, for the Class of 2029. This is a College first-year cohort statistic for Fall 2025 entry, not a Harvard University acceptance rate and not a forecast of an individual’s chance. Applicants should use the requirements for their exact route, submit complete materials and avoid treating the previous class’s rate as a personal probability.
Harvard College currently requires the SAT or ACT, with limited exceptions when access or cost makes those tests unavailable. Its published alternatives may include specified AP, IB, GCSE or A-level results, or externally assessed national leaving examinations in exceptional circumstances. English-proficiency tests such as TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo do not replace the College’s standardized testing requirement. The policy differs from older pandemic-era test-optional descriptions, so applicants should check the live College FAQ before planning a test schedule.
Graduate eligibility is set by the programme. GSAS international applicants generally need a recognized bachelor’s degree by matriculation and must meet that programme’s language, academic and application requirements. Some graduate programmes request the GRE or other materials; others do not. HBS MBA applicants, for example, follow a separate application that includes a GMAT or GRE and may require an English-language test depending on the applicant. These are examples, not universal Harvard graduate requirements.
The practical next step is to open the exact degree page and create a checklist with required credential, test, language evidence, recommendation count, essays and deadline. If a requirement is unclear, ask that programme’s admissions office. Do not infer eligibility from a general ranking, another school’s rules or the fact that an applicant has already completed a degree at a similarly named institution.
Harvard College students explore broadly before declaring a concentration, and Harvard’s Registrar lists 50 undergraduate fields. The College’s curriculum is not a fixed Indian-style major list. A student compares gateway courses, requirements, advising and opportunities before settling on a field. Concentration names can resemble subjects at other universities, but the credential and curriculum may differ. A Harvard College engineering concentration, for example, should not be assumed equivalent to an Indian B.Tech.
Graduate programmes sit within different schools and have their own catalogues and milestones. For a research doctorate, examine department faculty, labs or archives, advising structure, funding duration and progress requirements. For a professional programme, check the practical or clinical components, accreditation and licensing consequences in the country where you intend to work. A title such as “public policy,” “design” or “data science” does not guarantee the same coursework across schools.
Use the school directory to identify the awarding unit, then open that programme’s current catalogue and handbook. Compare required courses, elective choice, assessment, placement or practicum expectations, and degree length. If you are choosing between a College concentration and graduate study, remember that they are different stages of education with different application paths and costs.
Harvard College’s published 2026-27 cost budget lists $62,226 tuition, $6,216 mandatory fees, $14,250 housing and $8,942 food. Those billed items total $91,634 for the academic year. The College separately estimates $1,000 books, $2,500 personal expenses and $0 to $5,000 transportation, giving a $95,134 to $100,134 annual estimate before the separate $4,954 student health insurance line for students without comparable coverage. These figures are College undergraduate costs for 2026-27; they are not a 2027-28 schedule or graduate-school tuition.
Harvard College offers need-based aid to domestic and international applicants under the same aid process. Its policy says families with typical assets and income below $100,000 have a zero expected parent contribution and aid covering billed costs; families with typical assets and income up to $200,000 receive at least tuition coverage, with additional support determined individually. These are policy thresholds, not a guaranteed award for every family. Assets and personal circumstances matter.
For 2027-28 College aid, prospective applicants should use the official checklist and submit CSS Profile and IDOC; FAFSA applies to U.S. citizens, permanent residents and eligible non-citizens. Graduate-school tuition and funding vary by programme. A GSAS PhD offer may include tuition, health fees and living support, but that package is not a general benefit for all graduate students. Build a separate budget from the exact school’s published schedule.
Harvard’s main university footprint spans Cambridge and Boston. A programme’s location depends on the school, department and activities, so check where required classes, labs, clinics or studios meet before estimating a commute. Harvard College has a distinct residential pathway: first-year students live in or adjacent to Harvard Yard, and rising sophomores are assigned to one of 12 Houses. Each House has its own community and services. Graduate and professional students should consult their own school’s housing office; College residence arrangements do not apply automatically across the University.
Campus life also varies by programme. An undergraduate may spend much of the week around College housing and courses, while a professional student may travel to a clinical or studio location. Before accepting accommodation, verify eligibility, application dates, housing term and whether a room is guaranteed. Use the current map and school site to confirm exact buildings, transit routes and construction notices.
The University’s size means students should learn which offices serve their school. For College housing, the Dean of Students Office publishes residential information. For graduate or professional housing, use the school’s own service pages. This simple distinction helps applicants avoid relying on undergraduate descriptions when evaluating a different degree.
Harvard’s career services and reported outcomes are not a single university-wide system. Harvard College undergraduates can use the Mignone Center for Career Success for career exploration, internship and job counseling. Graduate and professional schools have services organized for their degree cohorts and fields. Ask the school you are considering about employer events, internship support, research pathways and career advising, including access for international students.
A credible outcome statistic should identify school, degree, graduating year, response denominator and reporting date. Harvard Law School’s Employment Questionnaire Summary Report covers 602 J.D. graduates in the Class of 2025, with status as of March 16, 2026. That is a school- and degree-specific snapshot, not a Harvard-wide placement rate or starting salary. The bounded official review did not establish a comparable University-wide placement percentage or salary distribution.
When comparing programmes, distinguish graduates employed at a survey date from those still seeking work, further study and short-term fellowships. Check who responded and which pay period and currency are used. Career advising can help students plan, but no office can guarantee a job. International graduates should separately verify work authorization with Harvard International Office and government sources.
Publisher rankings offer one broad comparison point, but keep the publisher and edition attached. QS placed Harvard at No. 5 in the World University Rankings 2027; Times Higher Education (THE) placed it at No. 6 in its 2027 edition. QS also had Harvard at No. 5 in 2026, while THE listed it joint No. 5 that year. These are university-wide publisher positions and should not be described as a rank for every Harvard school or subject.
Rankings use different methodologies, so they should not be averaged into a single score. A student comparing a degree should check a matching subject list only if the category fits, then review curriculum, faculty, cost after aid and programme outcomes. An overall position does not establish that a particular course is the best fit, that a student will be admitted or that graduates from every school share the same outcomes.
Older saved rankings may show different numbers. Keep historical results dated and use the publisher’s current profile before citing a newer edition. The useful comparison is the exact publisher, ranking family and year, alongside the programme evidence that matters for your decision.
International applicants should treat admission, financial aid and immigration as separate processes. Harvard International Office says most admitted full-time international students are eligible for F-1 sponsorship, while some may qualify for J-1. Harvard’s visa document is not the visa itself; the U.S. Department of State and consular officers control visa issuance. A student should follow the school’s document request process, check the I-20 or DS-2019 carefully, and use current government instructions for the next steps.
For Harvard College aid, international students can apply on the same need-based basis, but FAFSA eligibility is limited to U.S. citizens, permanent residents and eligible non-citizens. Graduate funding depends on the school and programme; do not assume the College aid policy applies to a professional or graduate degree. For visa and work rules, use HIO and official U.S. government sources. Visa issuance, appointment timing and post-study work are not guaranteed by admission.
A current State Department notice published September 18, 2026 says online-presence review effective October 1 includes F-1, M-1, F-2 and M-2 classifications. Because immigration policy can change, verify the live page before filing and again before travel. No general guide can determine an applicant’s individual visa outcome.
First identify the degree, school and entry term. Next open the school’s current admissions page, curriculum or handbook, tuition and aid schedule, and housing information. Record deadlines and costs with their year and period. If you are comparing outcome data, note the graduating cohort and denominator; if you are using a ranking, note its publisher and edition. These labels prevent the most common mistake: treating a University-wide name as proof that every school shares the same rules.
Then check fit. For an undergraduate, compare College concentrations and the first-year curriculum. For graduate or professional study, confirm prerequisites, tests, programme length, funding and any licensing path. International applicants should add visa-document timing and work authorization questions to the checklist. Use the official contact for each open question: College Admissions, the graduate programme, the relevant financial-aid office, the school housing office or HIO.
Harvard can be a strong fit for some goals and a poor one for others; the evidence to decide is programme-specific. A useful next action is to choose one degree and build a side-by-side worksheet from its official current requirements, total cost after aid, location and cohort outcomes. Keep old-year evidence as historical context and recheck all changing information for your intended entry cycle.
